Strength:

good solid neutral sound, should blend nicely with most speaker brands. plenty of power for your average bookshelf or small tower speaker. like most receivers in this range, there are plenty of connection possibilities on the back, and a convenient extra set of inputs on the front panel, as well as all the adjustments you would need for bass, treble, surround delay, large and small speaker settings, etc.

Weakness:

no ambiance settings like "stadium" or "dance hall", many receivers have these, as well as a bunch of other useless bells and whistles. i dont really take these as weaknesses, but some people expect these things in this price range.

well i bought a brand new t761 for myself, and a refurbished one for my mom. we have both used them extensively since late 2005 with no problems at all. i guess we got lucky, but the sound quality seems top notch, i have used this with b&w's and def tech speakers and the t761 makes the def techs sound as good as any other receiver that i used to demo other def techs at a few local high end a/v stores. i wish i would have waited for a better price, but after the problem free 2+ years i feel great about the purchase. due to all the negative reviews, i would probably not purchase another nad product without careful consideration, but so far so good. even disregarding the onslaught of negative reviews, i love the sound, the controls are simple, plenty of power and headroom. compared to any other $900 receiver i ever used, heard or demoed, this seems at least worth the money, if not more.

never had to deal with them, luckily, knock on wood...

Well my T761 finally got the best of me--this thing was a mess from day one--see my post from 2001--in the end all left channels went out. Spoke with audio rebuild shop NYC and was told that the T761 was junk when it was new---not worth trying to fix --and I must say-- I GOT GREAT FEELING OF JOY AS I THREW IT DOWN MY CELLAR STAIRS AND BEAT IT WITH A BALLPEAN HAMMER. How does a company sell crap like this? Only can happen in a corporate facist state- that is AMERIKA today A CORPORATE POLICE STATE. To the thieves at LENNBROOK who sold these defective pieces of crap----REMEMBER 1930'S GERMANY In the words of an American Founding Father "You need a good rap on you snouts". On the bright side NAD will NEVER screw me again--just put in my order for a Arcam AVR 300 . Hope.........

Strength:

great sound, nice looks, good array of inputs and outputs

Weakness:

reliablity, bad remote

This is an update of my previous review from sept. 2002...well the NAD bug finally bit me! The digital functions have stopped working, I only can use non-digital sources to get sound from the reciever. Also seems that everything but the front r&l channels are now dead (even level self test does not work)....so, while I liked the NAD and it was not DOA, it DID die after a few years of use...I guess I will buy a different bradn next time

Strength:

Pre-outs for separate amping. Great sound. Detailed. Crystal clear. Channel separation on DVD is supurb - even on cable/OTA TV there is no bleading or cross talk on channels. Typical NAD - power rating at 80 is very conservative - outperforms other amps with higher ratings. I can disturb the neighbors easily without overdriving the amp.

Weakness:

Reliability, build quality.

This is a follow up to a review I posted a year ago after purchasing and owning this unit for a little under one year. I have owned it for two years now. And it has been in the shop twice since then. The first time, after the one year mark, it was the *pop* *smoke* issue - ? Sent it in for repair via local audio shop who is also an NAD dealer. Service took a while - month plus. And they were pretty lackadaisical about when it would be done or the status of the repair...which I guess I can understand since they didn't sell me the unit and were not the ones in control of the situation...but you would think, being an NAD dealer, that they would want to inspire some confidence in the brand...The latest issue was interesting. Upon turning the unit on, it would only make terrible static noises in Dolby and pretty much any other mode except stereo until it warmed up. And even then it would drop the left channel until it had been running a while. After maybe 10 - 20 mins I could switch back to Dolby and it would be OK. Still, not good. So, I checked the warrenty and oh #%^* - it expired the next day. So, I called up DMC and, given the situation, they suggested I call NAD directly. This I did right away. I must say that NAD was very cool about the situation. I popped the receiver in the mail and they honored the warrenty. Service time was short and they fixed the problem - bad capacitor and a couple of boards needed to be soldered. So, got it back and it is working fine for the moment. Now, since this is my "daily driver" - being run for sound on the TV as well as HT, it is very annoying to have to be without for one month + out of any given year...and, now that the warrenty is expired, I am wondering if the bills for repair will change my mind? But the catch is that this unit sounds so sweet. It is synonymous the girl with great looks who treats you like dirt and spends all your money. 'Baby, you're fine, but why you gotta be like that? When are you coming home?'

Strength:

Great audio quality as expected; Simple chassis design (no fluff);

Weakness:

QC control; It’s been 3+ year and I’m wondering when this receiver will decide to go “belly-up”.

I have always been impressed of audio quality in which NAD components re-produce and decided to purchase a NAD T761 surround sound receiver. My initial experience had been a disaster with a couple of factory refurbished NAD T761 receivers that I purchased at the dealer. The first receiver only lasted a few hours before the front-left and rear-left channel failed. I return to the dealer and they were happy to replace it with another receiver. Moments after plugging the receiver into the wall and turning it on, the receiver made a loud POP and began to smoke. I found the casting of a small capacitor on the floor; which somehow projected through the vents on top of the chassis. Once again I was back at the dealer. I was feeling very disappointed and was considering to purchase different receiver. After going through two NAD lemons, the dealer said they would give me a brand new NAD T761 receiver. So far, it has been 3+ years and I have not experience any problems yet. I have been satisfied with audio quality in 2 channel stereo and 5.1 surround sound modes.

Strength:

Huge sonic upgrade from consumer-grade Japanese units, tasteful looks.

Weakness:

Weak remote; difficult to program and must be pointed straight at the IR target to activate anything.

This is a great-looking and great-sounding receiver which has so far met or exceeded my expectations in all ways. And I feel I got a good deal when I bought it. I purchased the T761 because I have always been a fan of NAD separates, and because this unit was well-reviewed when it came out. At the time I had little hesitation buying a new factory-sealed box from a reputable eBay seller. If I had read some of the recent reviews posted here I might have done differently. Thankfully, so far I have experienced none of the reliability problems some have noted with the T761 and so have not had any bad experience with NAD service.

Strength:

Sound

Weakness:

Customer service.

I have had this unit for 2 years now and experienced zero problems. I have been very happy with audio quality in both stereo and surround sound modes. EARS suits my tastes, though I usually reduce the level of the central channel. It does have a few quirks and lacks some features (like not remembering channel level settings from different input sources or inability to label input sources). Also NAD seems to be very committed to minimizing their communication with consumers which alienates those of use not near a dealership.

Strength:

brings older 2 channel music alive and sorry for the cliche, but i'm hearing things i havent heard before with this receiver. ie. i just listened to Busta Rhymes feat. Mariah Carey "i know what you want" and when Rhymes starts the song, i instantly heard two layers of his voice, one was an octave lower. I never, never heard this with the Yamaha!! I still like the look of NAD products so understated - gray uncluttered face plate.

Weakness:

NAD sucks for reliability and flexibility. Good luck if your unit malfunctions and your dealer is far away. i'd only buy this if an authorized dealer is just down the street (cause you'll be back). i could go on with the limitations of this receiver but i won't. Being a separates fan i unfortunately think upscale receivers are the future so Nad better step up to the plate with reliability and succumb to a few more bells in the processor department. annoying audible beeping sound when adjusting volume. too long of 'intermission' when changing sound modes...whats taking so long! audible cooling fan..and the 752's fan is apparently worse. Speakers "B" not working out of the box, and even if they did that would mean the 762 would downconvert all signals to stereo only (no 5 channel stereo for the main room or any other surround mode...why even have the extra speakers!!) so this means my basement pool room and my outdoor deck no longer has music simply cause i cant and dont want to switch on the speakers "B"....sucks to be me i guess. good thing i have a bit of background in hometheatre because the manual is about four pages long. i feel sorry for newbies if they have to labour through the manual.

This review is for the 762 as there is nowhere to review that here (is this site still current??) I purchased this receiver simply because i've been impressed with NAD seperates before and I still have two NAD power amps i'm incorporating in my home theatre. As far as receivers go, this unit is typically NAD...it sounds impressive but barely makes the cut for features..it is almost too "pure and simple". NAD should have left this philosophy for their players, preamps and amps. However when it comes to home theatre and receivers, bells and whistles (flexibility) aren't a bad thing. Compared to the usual Jap/asian offerings (YAM/DEN/PION) i believe both the amp section and front end of the 762 to be superior and hence the great sound. My previous YAM 1200 sounded so flat and boring with 2 channel music i was embarrased which is why i searched this product in the first place.

Yamaha rxv1200 - (sounded so/so but did everything i wanted it to. if i was to do this over again, I would have not let my previous enjoyment of NAD influence my decision and would have taken the advice of peers and bought an upscale Elite (say 47 or 49tx) as i wanted my next receiver to last and be in my home for several years. i didn't find it with the NAD.

Strength:

Great sound while it worked

Weakness:

Very very poor quality

I purchased the T761 before all of the QC issues came out on this board. I didn't have any problems, so I didn't worry about it. Then, just last week, it stopped working. Now just a hum comes out of the speakers. So, for all 761 owners out there, they can go bad after 3 years of working just fine!

I've always wanted to own an NAD product so I finally jumped in and bought a 761. Sound Quality: Very clean and smooth. Exactly what you would expect from NAD. Useability: Quirky controls and many features that are not addressable by the remote. Very limited control over configuring the system. Inflexible. Quality: The first one arrive DOA. The second one blew sparks and smoke just shy of one year. I tried to go to a closer dealer (I bought from an authorized dealer) for repairs. NAD won't allow it. They don't want to talk to consumers and won't allow you to deal with anyone but the dealer you purchased through (as told to me by the NAD people themselves). When I asked about the high problem rate with the 761's I was told they didn't have any information. When I asked about possibly swapping for a 752 (the replacement) and paying the difference they told me that they couldn't help me it was up to the dealer to do anything. Overall: NAD is sitting on their laurels. They have quality problems and they don't take care of their customers. If you are in the market I'd try instead the Harmon Kardon AVR-525. I'm going to sell my 761 and get one myself. Sad to see NAD become another bad egg in the industry.
