Strength:
I have used this amp in a variety of systems. It’s punchy and clean, more "warm" or "smooth" in the mids than the pre-MOS-FET designs, and always maintaining great control of the woofers. Note the amps in this series can all be mixed-and-matched since they all have 29dB gain, handy if you’re considering multi-amping. This is a great vintage amp, very sweet sound, no gimmicks, for a reasonable price. If you only need 50wpc, this is a great unit. Another Nelson Pass design (the series was made up of the 5200 5300 5400 5500 5502 and 5800 models), this amp is a variant of his famous MOS-FET series for Adcom. These are nice amps to upgrade: Pass states on DIY Audio that “I would bias it until the sinks run 50 deg. C after an hour or two. If you don't have a thermometer, this would be the temperature that you can leave your hand on the sink for 10 seconds.” It currently runs cool, so less Class A operating area but very stable and it has the great, warm, tube-like MOS-FET sound. My amp still seems perfect and I am NOT considering replacing the power supply caps or anything like that at this point- there may be a time, but if it sounds good, it is good. Excellent steel cab, quality binding post speaker terminals- seems indestructible. Affordable SEO Services Weakness:

I recognized the bright JBL's tweeter sound, and yes, I agree that it's too much. However, as soon as I tweaked aroudn the receiver's settings, the problem subdued immediately. I have NEVER heard Comfortably Numb's Dave Gilmour's guitar solo like that before. Mississauga Suspension Repair Weakness:

Sounds super good! Got it for $100, and just can't find anything better suited to my needs. Driving it with an Adcom GTP-450 preamp, and wired to a pair of Polk M20's as my office stereo system. Very detailed, natural, and straightforward.

Bought this amp for my son's college dorm. You know it's very rare you find an amp like this. First of all, separate amps in this price range are pretty hard to find. A good one is even harder. Listen to this and you've got one of these such amplifiers. Obviously not a whole lot of power, but enough to drive any speaker without working too hard. Sounds great; low noise; smooth highs; great midrange for an amp in this range. Give it a shot; it won't let you down. |

Nice little amp. Stacked it up against a $1000 Parasound in a dealer's showroom and neither of us could hear a difference. Color me impressed. |

Strength:
Very clear and smooth sound.
Weakness:
Only one set of speaker terminals. This is a wonderful piece of equipment. I purchased it to replace my 20 year old Kenwood integrated amp(it too was a great buy-can't remember model number though!) I purchased this amp brand new along with a used NAD pre-amp and was amazed at the sound improvement.I've heard things I never heard before.Currently using an old pair of Boston Acoustics A150MkII's-still sound great-best $500.00 speaker pair from the early 80's, but just ordered Magneplan MMG's can't wait to hear the Adcom drive those!
