The Marantz PM-8003; Hopefully, the PM-8004 is a carry-over to the PM-8003 integrated amlpifier --other than the tri-tone controls and the Speaker A/B switch differences.. I Have been enjoying the PM-8003 since August, 2009.

Sound quality; Absolutely excellent ! Think (and enjoy) a sound quality blessed with finesse; layered, dimensional and a truly remarkable "openness" to the mid-band. The sound is simply musical, yet airy, transparent and detailed. It offers a musicality quoutient that is rare --particularly at this price-point. If you want to know what makes some of the higher-end equipment so special, start here --with the PM-8003/4. It offers up an impressivre musical coherency that cannot fail to impress. Its musical "heart", is in the right place. Power output appears reasonablly capable --driving Reference 3A Dulcets.

Build quality is very good. Styling and ergonomics are also excellent. Input connections include( 3) high-level (aux), MM phono, and (2) recorder provisions. Personally, I'd prefer (2) additional "Aux" inputs as opposed to the tape loops (Recorder 1 and 2). Of course, secondary listening sources can be fed to the inputs (of the recorder in/out sockets) with minimal degradation to sound.
Additional (and welcoming) connections further include Pre-Out/Main-in capability, and Power Amp --Direct.

Thankfully, a source-direct control disconnects the tone and balance controls from the circuit. Now, if only Marantz would omit the tone-controls !

All-in-all, this is one fine integrated amplifier sure to please critical (and casual) listener's alike. Highly recommended.

I have been most active with vintage Marantz gear for over 20 years. But the last few years I have been enjoying new gear and its differences from vintage. Most of this review will be based on the Marantz 8004's comparision to the NAD C326BEE. Also a 2010 made integrated amp. The speakers I used were both full range 10" woofer three ways of my own design as well as 6.5" woofer DIY monitor speakers with a Paradyme powered sub.

The first thing that pops out at you is how stylish and well built the 8004 is. The feel and look just scream quality and class. It is not just another "black box" stereo. This amp has personality and looks. Marantz seems to be getting back to it's roots of making good looking gear like their big 70's receivers.

After both the honeymoon and break in period I did some serious listening on both sets of speakers. Having the NAD for about two years I was quite taken with the clarity, detail and amazing imaging of the 326BEE. The 8004 does have these same qualities but with a slightly different take on the sound.

The treble is very nice. Not beamy or harsh. Very smooth and airy and easy to listen to.

The midrange and upper bass is were this beast seems to come alive. A tremendous amount of detail and force in the midrange. This amp had dynamics and clarity in spades!!!!!

The bass is very lush and full. This amp has NO problem in the bass department when using either a powered sub or good old fashion passive three way speakers with a 10" woofer. The bass is strong, dynamic and Very well controlled. Not boomy or slow. Very articulate bass and well balanced.

The overall sound I would say about this amp is it is very full sounding, lush and VERY dynamic. Reminiscent of the sound of the big 70's receivers. But with far more clarity and imaging.

I use my Marantz 8004 for almost entirely classical low level listening. So detail and articulate sound at low levels are my main needs. The 8004 carries it off without missing a beat. At low levels this amp maintains it's great dynamic sound.

I really can not say enough about this amp other than that I am very happy with it. And I consider myself an audiophile. If you are reading this a trying to decide between two amps, and the other amp is cheaper, my advice is save up and get the Marantz 8004. Just my two cents.
