Strength:
Good audio processor, switcher. Good component video.
Weakness:
Could not get to work for HDMI video. Very disappointed that I could never get this product to work with the HDMI/DVI input outputs. Had numerous emails back and forth with Outlaw technical support trying to resolve. Ultimately they just blew off my problems saying that some products work with it, others do not. I have both a Philips DVR and a Panasonic Blu-ray player that never worked through the HDMI of the 990. Ultimately, had to bypass the Outlaw Processor and use for audio only. Customer Service Disappointed. Never resolved issues. Similar Products Used: B&K processors. |

Clean Prue sound, the best costomer service in the world!!! bank for the buck it simply can't be beat
Weakness:
really none but one could say size these units are big and the amp heavy but if doesn't matter it's a non-issue As stated before the word for this unit is WOW!!!! i bought the 990/7125 combo. the 7125 is the power amp @125wpc, i was running a onkyo ht SR600 and this is a no contest between those two.. on the 990 i love listening to 7 channel dolby music, to me it's better than 7 channel stereo and on the tv/dvd side this shines, movies become real life with this baby!! and the set up is not tough, everything is right on the display and just follow the along. i also run 2 Owtlaw audio 200watt mono block amps for bi-amping the front speakers, they are 4 Infinity alpha 50's with 2 alpha 20's for srback, then 3 alpha 1200s subs and a California Audio Labs CL-10 cdplayer, a HT Rane THX44 equalizer, Denon DP-47F turntable, Philips 46in ambilight LCD, and all interconnecters are Outlaw and all speaker cable is Monster M series, and a Monster Power 5100 conditioner, and one of the most important things {VIBRATION CONES} under everything !!!KEEP ALL YOUR UNITS VIBRATION FREE AND YOU'LL HEAR THE DIFFRENCE....TRUST ME..... and crank it up!!!! some jimmy thackery truned up good will work just right....lol....enjoy everyone.... Customer Service the best |

Strength:
Extremely low noise floor.
Weakness:
It has a few glitches, but show me a AVP or AVR that is not. I am in awe of the 990 AVP. The audio quality is as good as I've encountered in my 55 years on this planet. The Bass Management and Auto Calibrate are spot on.
Customer Service Outlaw Audio customer service is top notch. Similar Products Used: Pioneer, Yamaha, JVC,Carver,Parasound |

size (height mainly) - it's tall and fairly deep, so make some room I said a great deal about the 990 in the review I posted on my web site ( http://www.prillaman.net/990_review.html ), but it's worth saying a few things here as well.

Everything....simply amazing! Crossover is nice, being able to customize the crossover point of each speaker is cool, goes from 200 dow to 40.
Weakness:
None I have found so far. I replaced a Marantz sr-8500 that I was using as a pre/amp, needless to say what a difference the 990 has made. The sound and imaging from this unit is flawless. This is no comparison, as far as detail and clarity the 990 has brought me over the Marantz. The 990 is a neutral pre/amp and matches very well along with my Rotel RMB 1095 amp and my Klipsch RF-7's. If you can afford to move to seperates I HIGHLY recommend giving this unit a try, for the money their is nothing else that can compete with it.

Sound quality and build quality first and foremost. Detachable power cable, built in tuner, XLR balanced outputs, transferable 5 yr warranty, the list goes on.
Weakness:
I wish I discovered this unit and Outlaw Audio sooner. At the Model 990's price point, there is absolutely no weaknesses. I was looking for a A/V surround preamp priced below $2000 to go with my Parasound A52 five channel amp, after I decided to make the jump into separates. I decided to give this A/V preamp a try based on all of the positive reviews that I read. I ordered my Model 990, and it was delivered a few days later in a sturdy double box. Very professional. When I took it out of the box, I nearly dropped it due to it's weight. The thing is long and heavy, and weighs almost as much as my amp! I was pleasantly surprised by the build quality: excellent. Sound quality was excellent in two channel mode, and was especially good in surround mode while watching DVD's. Surround effects were nicely reproduced. Setup of the surround modes was a breeze; I hardly had to use the manual. Performance improved once I added a PS Audio Power Punch 1.5m power cable ($59.00 from Audioadvisor.com). The soundstage seemed to widen in two channel mode, and the detail within CD tracks seemed to improve as well. My humble equipment: Outlaw Model 990 A/V preamp Parasound A52 5 channel amp NAD C542 CD Denon DVD 1600 Paradigm Monitor 9 tower speakers Paradigm CC-370, Polk surrounds Overall, I can't believe what a steal this unit is. If you buy this unit along an amp from Outlaw Audio, they will give you $200.00 off at checkout. What a deal. If I had discovered Outlaw Audio before I bought the Parasound, I probably would have bought an amp from Outlaw at the same time I got the 990 and been totally happy. Buy this unit! You won't be disappointed. Similar Products Used: Denon and Sony receivers |

Strength:
Phono inputs for a turn table. Flexibility for virtually any audio and video set-up or configuration.
Weakness:
It's big! Nope, not even that is a weakness! The Outlaw 990 has exceeded my expectations in every way. I have had my Infinity RSII and my RS7 speakers since the early 80's. At the time and even to this day, I have not heard a more accurate and pleasing full range speaker system regardless of price. All these years I have been running things with a 80's Hafler preamp and 1000 watt/channel Hafler amps. Recently I began looking for a good surround preamp, but I couldn't spend the $3000. to $4000. that it looked like was necessary to go with my system. My wife found the Outlaw 990 on the internet for far less, and I read all the magazine reviews. I ordered the 990 in December, 2005 and hooked everything up. We have been watching digital cable and DVD movies for weeks, and no theater we have been to had anything to beat us on movie sound experience with the 990. Then the other night I finally broke out a couple of CD's and with the Outlaw's Dolby Pro-logic II Music setting we enjoyed 5 channel music for the first time. The experience literally brought tears to our eyes! What incredible clarity the 990 offered and we felt totally "immersed" in the music. I have been to many live concerts that couldn't begin to sound that good to me! There are many places you can read about all the features of the 990, so I won't mention them here. Just know that you will be very pleased with the Outlaw 990, no matter what other components you have to go with it. Similar Products Used: none in my home. |
