Strength:

Does not need the help of any technologies (like dbx, Dolby b/c, HX pro) to achieve it's objective of superior freqency repsonse.

Weakness:

None

My friends and I are "tired" from a digital sound. I used RX-505 for one year, and recently have got ZX-7. First of all has amazed its condition! A deck of 20 years, and looks - as yesterday it comes from shop. CD copies on a deck sound much more expressively, more attractively and much more interesting than original CDs on my Sugden CD-21 player. I think, that the best alternative than cassette deck does not exist. Nothing on the market today can approach the Nak for there overall sound recording, relability, unique design, and good looks. Good luck for Naks owners!

Strength:

Crispy clear, yet warm sound. Manual calibration of azimuth, bias and level.

Weakness:

None.

A great deck. I Own mine for about 18 months now. After a careful recalibration it hasn`t shown any weaknesses during this period. The only deck I know which can beat this machine is my ZX-9, which is a special tuned version of the ZX-9 using direct drive and some refined electronics.

Wow, what a tape deck! I've been involved in an audiophile home stereo business for several years and have seen dozens of different models of tape decks. However, nothing has impressed me as much as this tape deck. It came in for a small repair, and I found myself playing all my good tapes through it. It is totally true to the original recording, and is state of the art in every way. It offers two sets of stereo bias adjustments for each tape type! One set for 400 Hz, and one for 15 KHz. The unit helps you calibrate the bias by looking at the level meters. No swapping between monitor and source. Combine this with the manually controlled record head azimuth control. You can be confident that every recording you make is being made at the highest quality. This deck has great treble transparency, a true bottom end that I have not heard before in a home cassette deck. Truly a remarkeable deck. If you can find one for under $700, go for it; you won't regret it.

Strength:

Musicality

Weakness:

None really, although tape transport isn't cutting edge.

This is the most musical Cassette Deck I have ever heard. The ZX-7 has a certain something; great dynamic range low noise, but a special warmth that I haven't heard before in a Cassette Deck. Build quality is good, although the quality of some of the discrete componentry is only average (particularly compared to my KX-1200). The transport is good although I feel the MR-1 (after the gear modification to the idler wheel) is a little better. Where the ZX-7 and ZX-9 have it over ever other cassette deck is the flexibility to calibrate Bias/EQ etc. Once again, if you love retro technology a ZX-7 or ZX-9 is a must.

I just bought this classic. I always loved old Nak gear. It was special. Always cutting edge gear. This deck has all the azimuth, record level, bias level adjustments so making a great tape is just too easy. Made in 1981 to 1984,this black beauty with its' discrete head design, really sounds warm, personable, and clear. This isn't a cheapy harsh sound digital minidisc thing. It just tapes along today with a look on its panel that is as fresh today,as it was back in 1981. I couldn't say it looks overly elegant. My Tandberg TCD-3014 does that in spades. It will make a great tape though. I had to buy a new capstan and mode control drive belt for the Nak,but so what??!! Anything this old with belts is going to be "stretched and worn city",so for about $11.00,and 20 minutes of my time,I have a killer classic. A nice addition to my personal studio. Makes my Sony DTC-A6 DAT machine earn its' keep. Tied in with my Mackie CR1604-VLZ mixer. It will make a great analog master deck. All I need is an MDM,and I am set. I am glad that Nakamichi made this and other great decks back in the 80s' and early 90s',so that we audiophiles could have an affordable classic today. See the unofficial Nakamichi web site. You will find alot of followers of the old great cassette decks that made Nakamichi the tour de force in that field, and others today. "Hear the difference and you will see." Happy listening.

Strength:

Crisp and clear highs. Ture to the original source.

Weakness:

None

The best tape machine that I have ever heard. I have owned since new. Paid $1250 in 1984. I think is is better than the Dragon because you can make your own adjustments. It is very fun to set up for recording. These units appear to be very rare or "keepers" because you don't see them on the resale market. My bet is that if anyone has one they intend to keep it for a long time. This is a very serious piece of equipment.
