Strength:
Some of the misconception regarding the Bose 301 Series II speakers is that they lack an acceptable bass output. My remedy consists of 2 simple and inexpensive applications. Since these are direct reflecting speakers; location is important. 1) Be sure to follow the placement directions in the owners manual. 2) Add a decent subwoofer to the speaker profile to lend a helping hand to the bass response, always keeping in mind the speaker placement. I used these 2 simple suggestions and am very happy with the results. I love my set-up and recommend it to anyone using the Bose 301 Series II speakers. They are awesome!! Weakness:
Weakness; bass response. These speakers should be referred to as Bose 301 (2.1). These are high quality speakers and deserve a subwoofer of equal quality to solidify the sound spectrum. I always buy used audio components as I get a tremendous discount. Note: Owners manual can be found online for free. A decent subwoofer can be had for $100-$200. if bought used. Just be careful buying when used equipment. Price Paid: $50.

The bose 301 series 2 speaker seems to be the best speaker of the 301 series Bose ever made so far. They are good speakers but not great and definitely not hi-end. They lack deep base and high notes are not that accurate but considering their small size the sound quality is good especially when playing audiophile recordings, preferably jazz and boost the base by around 3dB to make up for the lack of low notes. Also the positioning like all other speakers is a must so you will have to experiment with their location to get the best overall sound quality. |

WOW....that was the expression I just made while listening to my Bose 301 II. I must admit, I do at times read review to help me make decisions when buying audio gear. especially when buying speakers that i have not heard. When I was a teenager, I always wanted a pair Bose speakers. After reading several reviews about Bose, I decided against it. I've had Wharfedales, Cantons, JBL, Infinity, Realistic( as a teenager) and a few other. I now have two systems one in the bedroom, which is a older tube system which consist of a Dynaco pas 3 preamp,Arcam dv27a used a a cd player and a st70 amp mated with a pair Usher s520. My main system consist of a Emotiva usp 1 pre, erc1 cd player, Marantz 2120 tuner, sony es 5 disk changer as a transport, processed by a marantz dsp870 NAD 2600 amp and a pair Apogees centaures mated with Velodyne hgs 12.. Several weeks ago I got that teenage itch again to try a pair Bose 301 II in my bedroom. Found a very nice pair, looked almost new. I took down my Ushers, and hooked them up. I had to stand them vertical on my stands because of space. I listen to them for a couple weeks. they were ok, but nothing special. Guess I'll selll them, finallly got that itch scratched. placed them on Ebay for a day, with several views, but no watchers. I pulled the listing, and decided to see locally. One night while sitting listening to my main syatem, looking at the spaces on my entertainment system, i noticed a space that the 301's would fit into perfect. i grabbed them from the closet placed the perfectly on the shelf. really complimented the entertainment system. now my mind is wondering how they would sound hooked up to the NAD. The next morning out of curiousity, unhooked the Audio Quest speaker wire from the Apogees and gave it a shot.. This leads me back to the first word of my review WOW. I first put on Norah Jones, followed by Miles Davis Kind of blue, both pieces wowed me to the point of if my Apogees went out, I can definately live with these as a replacment. BTW I never hardly write reviews |

The Bose series II is is a great bookshelf speaker. I had the III sereies and they did not sound as good as the II's. If properly powered and with proper location, they produce a vary balanced and intriguing sound. Bass is quite good if positioned against room surfaces correctly. Midrange is very good and the high end is excellent. These speakers are just fun to listen to. |
