Truly fabulous sound when connected to a good source. Ideal for the classical music and opera that we like best (all music, really) but slightly lacking in bass for home cinema use so we have them in tandem with a REL subwoofer, making for a very complete, rich and natural sound.

They're especially good with a neutral but not cold CD source. We've had the unreliable Cambridge Audio 840C and moved on to a nice little TEAC PD-H600 player that works brilliantly with these speakers and a Cambridge amp.

I can say that the Focus 110A are exceptional little speakers. I was not able to audition them so I purchased them on the basis that they are active, and Dynaudio, and therefore should be much better than my pretty good passive speakers. I was right.
I am well versed in the advantages of active speakers and used this knowledge, as well as my budget, as my guide that led me to these little gems.
For the first time I am hearing sound that does not appear to be coming from the speakers at all, but rather from between or behind them much more convincingly than before. Active speakers can produce a much more stable soundfield. Holographic is a word that many would use to describe the sound.
They are very resolving, cymbals have never sounded better and all instruments are just more real sounding. Very real sounding! Active speakers are less prone to frequency response errors as the crossover point does not change when the speaker impedance changes with temperature. Also, intermodulation distortion can be much lower and phase shift can be controlled in the active crossover design.
The music is projected effortlessly at the listener rather than being forced with the urge to turn up the volume as with my previous speaker amp combo which are very good and would, when new, together cost nearly double what the 110A’s sell for.
They are very addictive to listen to because of their clarity and ability to separate all the instruments and voices.
Warning, you will not be able to walk away from the music playing through these speakers.
They could be also be described as lean sounding but I feel it is because they don’t have that low frequency undertone that plagues many passive speakers. The bass is there, but it is so well controlled that it doesn’t hang around any longer than intended. Tight and quick might describe the bass, but they really do go quite low. The damping factor in an active speaker will be much higher and the “Q” of the speaker is much more stable allowing it to produce very accurate bass.
These particular speakers have two 50 watt amplifiers, one for the tweeter and the other for the woofer, in each cabinet. This may not sound like a lot of power but active speakers can produce up to 6 dB more level than passive speakers. So, these speakers could produce sound output equivalent to a 200 watt per channel amp.
I am extremely happy with these speakers and I am not looking for alternatives anymore.
Mine have the white gloss finish which is perfect for me and a refreshing change from wood finishes.
Highly recommended!
