Strength:
I use these speakers in my second system in my holliday home in France. I had these speakers in my home in Belgium some twenty years ago,but sold them when I bought the Nautilus 801. I always had problems with the high frequency respons of this Nautilus, especially on close miked women voices,so some years ago I changed it for a pair of Wilson Audio Sofia 3 speakers that I love very well. But! I still had very good memories of the 801s3,so when I was able to by a second home in France I found a pair of these speakers in very good condition and with the BAF filter to place there. They are powered by a Krell KAV 2250 to keep the bass very thigt and sound really marvellous. Sometimes I even prefer them over my Sofia’s. Weakness:
They need a powerfull amp to keep the bass thight. Price Paid: 2000€

Still a relevant loudspeaker for those with larger rooms. Panoramic soundstage. Even balance.

The BW 801 Series 3 is "the speaker". I think is better than the series 2 (five years in my home).I think the APOC is the worst invention in the history of B&W.¿ Why I need the APOC for domestic applications?. The absence of the APOC in the series 3 has brought a simplification of the filter and a better performance in transparency.

I'm a recording engineer and producer. I master quite a bit lately. Like most people who work with audio, I find the audiophile world a bit fanatical. The 801 is a tool for people like me. We don't need the sound to "blossom", or fill some other void our gardens are not. We simply want to hear what's there. I can review material and hear where someone went wrong, or when a recording and subsequent master was a success. I can hear the phase shift imparted by various equalizers. I can make precise judgements, and I'm not rewarded until I've gotten it right.

Strength:
Both S2 and S3 models are great loudspeakers
Weakness:
S2 version just sounds better
In my opinion the Series 3 of B&W Matrix 801 loudspeaker was mainly a cost cutting exercise done by B&W on the back of the Matrix 801 Series 2 model that was then marketed to us all as a set of improvements.

Strength:
Excellent for Classical/Chamber
Weakness:
not outstanding for Jazz&Rock, but could be resulted from my amp/source setting. Those who enjoy classical & chamber music enjoy M801S3 as well. Current stuff: WADIA 8 + VIMAK DS1800 Gryphon Bel Canto Classe'' CA200, runs the woofer Krell KSA50S, runs the mid + tweeter B&W Matrix 801S3 Before purchasing the 801s3, i''ve heard that it is not easy to drive the loudspeaker. Trying bi-amp is the way out; and it works. Have compared with other amp like Classe'' 70, Classe'' 401, Gryphon S100, Hafler XL280(monox mono) and Krell KSA100S, and found the Classe'' CA200 runs the most balanced and vivid the woofer of 801S3 with excellent control. The bass is tight and with the sense of high speed. It is possible because of my room dimension makes the CA200 the right amp. By the way, KSA50S runs wonderfully the mid+tweeter with the music of warm and clarity, and is the best match with CA200 when bi-amp for the M801S3. may try the combination if you do not content the 801S3 performance. Intense. B&W have left no room for argument. The audio image created by these superior speakers is truly an acoustic hologram. To say I was impressed with the Matrix 801 S3 system would be an outright lie. I'm convinced. They are pure music. How do those guys make them? |

Strength:
clarity, smooth midrange & treble, deep tight bass
Weakness:
build quality not as good as the originals and not much choice of finish available good speakers, source and amplifing equiptment should sound even handed and make all disks sound good, and good recording sound excellent. In my opinion, thats what these speakers do. I previously owned the original 801 which although they had their limitations had great strengths also. Id say the biggest strength of the 801 matrix is the holographic, almost electrostatic sounding midrange, which in some ways is the most important bit to get right. Having got that right B&W had to make big improvements on the bass which they have done with the matix cabinet. Bass notes are clear and tunefull, stop and start right on time. Turn up the volume and prepare for thunder! Then theres the treble thats not to bright like many speakers but makes cymbals sound metalic. I have no critisms yet of these speakers except they only came in three finishes, none that I really like much. Some people seem to critise these speakers but im sure that the problem is due to the cd player they are using, or the amp. I am using a meridian 508 20 bit cd player, 502 pre amp & two 557 power amps in bridged mode(690 watts at 8 ohm available per channel). im sure that big speakers like these really need big amps to exert authority over them for best results. At the moment i am only using cheapish cables and im looking for advice. I want to keep the poweramps right up close to the speakers so i need to get 2x 6 meter balanced interconnects XLR, and 0.5 meter speaker cables. Also I need 0.5 meter interconnect XLR from cd player to pre amp. Id be glad of any suggestions. I have around £1000 to spend on cables. Similar Products Used: B&W 801 1979 |
