At the time I bought these it was a lot of money to shell out. I bought two pair because I wanted to cover a living room and dining room. It was a mojor purchase for my home remodel and the small design had some influence along with the Bose name. These speakers are totally flat unless cranked up. I must admit they are ceiling installed, but the Polk RC80i in the other rooms are much more pleasing and run on a lot less power. Some blues and jazz come through really well, but rock isn't a consideration. I need a speaker that will carry a full sound at low volume and high. This falls short.

Strength:

clarity, precision, accuracy. space requirement and installation.

Weakness:

doesn't perform as well with other solid state... but does good... much better eith the ls 48 and sa 3 amp.

I purchased these speakers for my entire home music system. I auditioned many different brands and types. I didn't compare to JBL, POLK, or the like as these are not the best quality speakers on the market. I compared my selections to Wilson, Thiel, Aerial, etc. So Bose was not on my list of possible selections. However, when I walked into the Bose store and auditioned the 191 series.... needless to say I was very impressed. The true reason these sounded fantastic is that they were coupled with the Lifestyle 48 and SA3 Amplifier all designed by Bose for the 191 speakers.

You can use the 191 on standard solid state equipment, however the sound will not be as wonderful. Base may not be as boomy as many... however accurate sound isn't based on boominess, but clarity, precision, and imaging. With the SA3 and Lifestyle 48 it ability for music reproduction from an in-wall speaker compares well against the Thiel and Aerial. If you want cheap boom without great sound.... get JBL or Infinity... if you want clarity, accuracy and precision the 191 are great speakers. Just remember that they were designed to be coupled with the LS 48 and SA 3 Amp.

The additional great feature of this speaker is that it can reproduce stereo from one speaker... however you have to use the SA 3 amp to acieve this.

I have had this system installed in two homes I've built...and not disappointed.

Strength:

Very small hole required. Came with circle and square grills.

Weakness:

Not a lot of bass but the quality and no distortion made up for it.

When I first heard them in the store, they didn't sound well due to poor displaying, but I figured since the hole required to mount them was much smaller then the other brands, I could always exchange them and make the whole bigger for others if I needed to. But I was quite impressed with the sound once I installed them at home, 500% better then at the storefront. The bass was rich, and the highs were undistorted. Of course the bass isn't as boomy as the other brands, but I noticed that the other brands distorted heavily when turned at high volumes due to the bass, so most likely I would have to have the bass turned all the way down with some of the other brands.

Strength:

Size Sound Ease of installation (with rough in kit)

Weakness:

None found

Typical Bose speaker. Excellent sound (to include bass) despite the incredibly compact dimensions. Almost didin't check them out based on the only two online reviews I could find, but am glad I did. Many listeners equate overpowering bass with the quality of the sound. If you belong to that crowd look elsewhere. These speakers were used in my basement finising project, and I utilized the rough-in kit. It would definitly be a job to install these in existing construction. The installation manual gives detailed instructions on how to cut thru walls and ceilings which should allow a knowlegeable do it yourselfer to handle it.

Strength:

Fits well in wall, easy to install.

Weakness:

No bass whatsoever

Other review is absolutely right. I got shafted! These speakers may be wonderful with a subwoofer, which I now have to purchase, but otherwise there is absolutely no bass. Awful, Awful purchase.
