Just picked this up used for $160. love the bass it produces but there is a slight hum constantly. Kind of annoying if you have the volume low and now that I can hear it, It's kinda hard not to notice it. Is there anything I can do to fix the problem? Weakness:

I received this sub from a friend for free as it had a 60Hz hum, was pretty bad. I took off the back panel and looked at the 4 circuit boards looking for the issue, none of the caps were bulging (caps that have dried out and lost their capacity. I then put my voltmeter on the output of the power supply, 31.5v DC, then switch my volt meter to AC, 950mV, wow, way to much AC ripple. I added three 220uF 75V caps (what I had laying around) to the power supply output, now the AC ripple was 5mV.

Just picked up a PV800 for $100. It's my mid wall subwoofer and I have to say for my first BA product I am very impressed. Using a bass sweep test it can produce usable bass down to 19hz although there is a rather noticeable 3-4.5 dB drop around 22-24hz which is more than acceptable for this range of subwoofer. A previous reviewer stated he was disappointed and would go with Klipsch subwoofers next. Save your money and spend it on an SVS or Velodyne. Klipsch doesn't have a decent sub until the $800 range and even than it's nothing to write home about. Years ago when Mirage, Athena, Klipsch and Energy were all part of the same kick ass company they made their best products. Newer Klipsch subs like the Synergy Sub 10 and 12 are easily blown away by the cheaper Energy S10.3. Anyways for $100 this is the most solid sub I'm sure I'll ever find. Thanks Craigslist!

I have owned this sub for a while know and reading the reviews I have never heard the hum that a few people have referring to and after reading some of the comments I tested my sub. The only way that I could produce that hum was to turn the volume to the max but in my everyday music listening I am between 4 to 7 on the dial and there is no hum with my sub, even with my ear up to the side of the cabinet. I enjoy my PV800 sub and I am not looking to buy another product. |

Strength:
Musical Sub, tight BASS
Weakness:
Defective Amps in this product line. Very disappointed in BA. I'll admit it when I'm wrong. I'm convinced now a high percentage of these subs have defective amps. My Sub has developed the HUM. It was fine and recently it started to HUM. GRRRR! It is defnitely annoying and makes the sub unuseable for music/HT now. I'm going to take it apart, but I'm sure it is something with a defective AMP. Maybe try and get an aftermarker sub amp. I'm looking for a new Sub at this time to replace it as it is out of warranty. I probably won't buy another BA product at this point. Hsu/Velodyne/SVS for me now. When it didn't have the Hum it was a great sub. |

Strength:
Tight, crisp sound. Great for music and home theater use.
Weakness:
Haven't really found any. I have to say that I enjoy the tight responsiveness of the PV800. I spent quite a bit of time looking for the right sub and this one definately fits the bill. I have not experienced the 'humming sound' (in the 8 months that I have owned it) that others refer to. The sub is great for audio or home theater use and is a great buy. Strength:
Overall, the sound was good, not great, but good.
Weakness:
I thought the sounds was very boomy and ended up using my speakers drivers for the bass, rather than the sub for music. Also, did not appreciate the rattle effect caused by the downward pointing speaker. I just recently replaced my PV800. While the sound of the PV800 wasn't bad, I did not like the effect that the downward facing speaker caused. The speaker would unecessarily rattle everything in my house. Maybe it was due to the wooden floor, but I would definitely make sure you get a full return policy in case you see the same issues. As far as the hum that other reviews referred to, never heard it. It was connected to Yamaha DSP-A1. Similar Products Used: Replaced the PV800 with a B&W ASW CM. The B&W easily out-performs the BA sub, but also costs signficantly more. |

Strength:
Very Tight Bass, Muscial subwoofer. Volume control on the front.
Weakness:
weak feeling switches on back. Well, I think those guys with the buzzing have an obviously defective sub. Sounds like a bad PS/AMPs from the supplier to BA. No product line is 100% perfect and to base a review on a defective product is not a fair representation of the products true performance. That being said I have NO Buzzing. I recently purchased this sub after auditioning the subs available at Tweeter. This was more an impluse buy then a studied/researched buy. Based on the sale rep and listening the the subs availabe (in the price range I was looking at) the BA sounded the most musical and tight. I really liked the volume control on the front. It was actually a very easy subwoofer to listen to and wasn't a black distortion production box. My previous college year POS sub produces more distortion than actual sound. I'm very impressed by the sub for the price. I'm still trying to find the best place for it, but I'll be keeping this sub for a long time. This sub blends nicely with my current floor standing speakers and I would definitely buy again. I highly suggest anyone looking for a great sub at a great price, look at the BA. -------- Pioneer Elite 720HD Marantz Pre-amp Marantz MA500s monoblock x3 Marantz MA700s monoblock x2 Klipsch CF-3 Klipsch KV-4 Klipsch surronds Boston Accounstic PV800 sub Similar Products Used: low end subs. |
