Strength:

Damn! This amp sounds incredible. Beats my old McIntosh (and some other amps) in every departement. Neutrality, slam, speed, 3D and extreme detail. A great surprise and an amp to hold on to. A true hidden gem. Built for studio/radio, but fits in any HiFi setup.

Weakness:

No RCA in (needs adapter If you dont have XLR). It is fan cooled, but by a simple procedure you can disconnect the fan. In a regular HiFi setup you wont need the fan. Just in case, I have elevated the lid for better heat dispatch. Now it’s dead quiet.

Strength:

Sound quality for the $$$. Outstanding power. Ultra crisp music reproduction for a solid-state amp. The damping factor is greater than 200, so the bass response is outstanding. I can crank the bass to max on my old speakers and the music holds firm, is rich, and enjoyable! No other amp I've had comes close.

Weakness:

Seriously....none. Kudos for Yamaha.

First off, I'm not sure when this amp was made. What I do know is, it doesn't matter! I just paid $230 off an ebay find, and I couldn't be happier with it. It's 3x the value of my $630 Cambridge Audio Azur 640A v2 integrated amp, which lacked the power and clarity of output power of this amp. The 200W/channel into 4 Ohm loads is driving my Snell J II bookshelf speakers marvelously. In fact, they made the Snell J II sound so rich and dynamic (without any tweaking of tonal controls whatsoever), that I've removed the bulkier Snell E II from my system and room and put them up for sale. That said, know that this amp will power a smaller set of speakers wonderfully. My Snell J II never sounded so crisp, so clean, so full of music. Some tubeheads will laugh at anything non-tube, but I'll tell you one thing, for $230 you'll be laughing all the way to the bank on these guys who either have too much money to burn, time to kill, or audio pride to let go of.

Let me tell you that I'm running my music through my HP Pavilion m8100n, which has a Soundblaster Xtreme Music card installed (the high-end professional card), and I'm using quality monster cables from it to the amp (including a set of XLR to RCA adapters), and the music and functionality of my system is marvelous. I've got the best of all worlds here: price-efficiency, functionality, sound quality, and happiness!

Anyone wanting high quality power at a low cost, seriously consider this amp. I've been listening to music for 30 years quite seriously, and this is a joy to own, even despite the fact my Snell J II are 21 years old!!! The Snells sound as good as anything I've auditioned lately, including Rega R1, and the $4800 Monitor Audio PL100. Some might laugh at that, but money can't always give a person the sound he/she is looking for. Find what you like and buy it. Simple.

Cheers.

Strength:

Smooth, warm, crisp response. Robust build quality. Excellent for audiophile use and for life on the road. Power efficiency.

Weakness:

Could not discern any yet so far.

I've been looking for a decent amplifier for the past three months, and since you'd be dishing out more than half a grand, you'd better do your research. I've searched high and low for the optimum choice (not just affordable) of an amplifier that would endure the bumps of being mobile and delivering excellent sound reproduction at the same time. Seems like an incompatible combination but there are amp users of our kind. Simply put, we can't afford two amps. I use the amp for drama presentations, and an amp that powers both my monitor speakers when I edit my footage with Avid. I must say I am very satisfied with what this amp could offer. I iniitally had apprehensions about the EEEngine sustaining power when the signal slowly escalated. But as I bumped it up several notches ....the amp had power to sustain a "meatier" signal without batting an eyelash. There seemed to be no power lapses at all. The specs do say that THD was less than .05% and it surely sounds that way. The signals were quite distinct, and I began to realise new tones and expressive nuances in music that I have listened over and over before. I thought they were nuances brought about by power fluctuations, but a simple repeat of the same bars did reveal that they were really there. I would listen to Bach's Orchestral Suites Nos. 1-4 (Capella Istropolitana/ Jaroslav Dvorak), and you could hear the horse hairs sometimes scratching when they were not supposed to. I would recommend this product to those who want a robust amp with audiophile qualities. It is excellent for monitor speakers as well. Most amps in this category have THD's usually less than1% and S/N ratios that are not necessarily acceptable. Also, the p1600s elder brothers were THX approved (Lucasfilm, Ltd. ) I "would" like to assume that the circuit design of the p1600 amps are similar to its elder brothers only differing in power. This is just my two cents worth, I encourage you to find out for yourself. Bring speakers you have grown to listen to over the years and audition the amp with them. You might hear your speakers breathe with new life.
