Strength:

Tuner AM/FM, Sound

Weakness:

Service & support maybe hard to find.

Very good sound radio or no radio (the unit has tape inputs/outs & pre-amp outs). It has an excellent (world class) tuner. Best AM sound I have ever heard. This is a very well built unit and quite heavy and a pleasure to use. The last of the modern quality radios. I have a first rate stereo but many people still prefer the sound of this Radio. Highly recommended if you can find one (most people will not get rid of it).

At the time I bought it Proton went under but has re-surfaced ever since with an inferior and cheaper unit. I am not sure what the support of this amazing product is from the new Proton ..

This is a radio that I lusted after in the eighties and recently
purchased used. It was called simply "The Radio". It features an
incredible schotz designed digital readout tuner. The unit functions
as either a stand alone mono unit, or a stereo set when paired with
the optional 301 powered extension speaker. The set I am reviewing
features the additional speaker. Okay, onto the comments.

First off let me say, I have owned many radios in my lifetime. My
latest was the current so called "best table radio" the Bose. I purchased
it new and sold it a year later. I also owned the current Proton table radio model. I would rate the sound and overall build
quality of both as 2 stars. Comparing these two radios to the older Proton is like comparing a chevrolet cavalier to a Lexus 400. This radio is simply in another league altogether. To my knowledge, this appears to be the only
true attempt at building and marketing a high end radio in the United States over the past twenty years. This radio possesses a sweet beguiling sound,
with very impressive bass. The Schotz designed tuner is very very good. This
is mated to an analog tuning knob, with a very nice weighted feel. This
unit also features a pre-amp out, one line level input, and tweeter output
control. Overall, this is probably as good as it gets in a table radio.
If you are looked for the best possible sound in a table radio, this is
the one to get. Forget the Bose wave radio!! You can buy this one on the used market for less.
