Strength:

All the conveniences and features of MD player/recorders, teriffic sound, great archiving, ya da, ya da...

Weakness:

One day it jammed and that was the end. The eject mechanism wouln't return media and the machine would no longer function. A lost cause, I donated it to charity.

I thought I was the only one. Now I see there's an army of us with Sony JE-510s that no longer function. At least I got around a year out of it before its shoddy construction gave out. Is there a class action suit in the works? Where's Erin?

MDS JE510. . . .started out great. . .died at 13 months. . .now only plays after I broke the microswitches off the board.. . .1 month over warrenty.
Surface-mount micro-switches are the
fault of this unit. . . .they are pounded
by the slides for holding the disc.

Poor engineering. . .. . but sounded great
when worked. . . .

I have owned this unit for 2.5 years now and have not had one single problem with it! Though I must admit I only use it maybe once a month if that to record a new disc for a road trip or the office.

My experence with sony has been that if you get a lemon right away first 3 months or so. You can't fix it! Get a new one. If you get a good product it last for years. And yes there customer service is really really bad.

Anyway I get this player in a bundle and I really like it!

Its good stuff, if you get a chance to pick one up do it!

Strength:

Very easy to use, nice high S/N ratio.

Weakness:

Reliability and quality of build.

When it worked, it worked great. My unit had a defective eject mechanism (press eject, nothing happens, MD stuck inside). It would still play/record, but it wouldn't eject. Took it apart, removed the top metal bracket, and this seemed to fix the problem. Works like brand-new again.

I was very disappointed in the quality of the unit. It's now operating properly, but only after removing a piece of the metal bracket. This "ejection" problem is also giving a friend trouble, but at least now i know how to fix it.

Recording/playback quality is very good. I also liked the features of the unit. The only problem is with the cheap construction. I'd recommend staying away from this unit.

Strength:

great sound, easy to use

Weakness:

a lemon.

like every else, my unit failed with the disc eject mechanism also along with the mysterious power on by itself. i can not recommand anyone to buy this model since the chance of it failing is quite high (after reading many complain about the same problem). sony will charge about $160 us dollars to have it fix.
