Strength:

Tons of memory with great learning capabilities. Good library of preprogrammed codes. LCD screen to indicate mode. Quality backlighting. Stickers for keys.

Weakness:

Doesn't want to learn from my Sherwood A/V receiver's remote. Stupid design not to have dedicated transport keys.

I bought this remote for one reason: My Radio Shack remote was out of learning memory and it contained no pre-programmed codes for my new Sherwood receiver. I was completely happy with the design of the 15-1994 but I was kind of out of options if I didn't want to go back to using 2 remotes (one for the receiver and one for everything else).

I'm using the HTM 9000 with the following components:

Pansonic 27" TV
Sanyo VCR
DISH Network 7100 Sat Receiver
Sherwood RVD-8090R A/V Receiver
Toshiba SD-2008 DVD player

This remote does almost everything I need it to. The pre-programmed codes for the Sherwood receiver work for most functions but there are a couple missing and the remote places some of the functions in awkward places. I thought "No problem, I'll just use the learning feature to add the missing functions and move the functions where I want them". Well, this remote doesn't seem to want to learn functions from the Sherwood remote. Strange, but I can do without those functions I guess. It didn't have any problems learning from my other remotes.

As to the design, I actually like the Radio Shack button layout and shape better. The HTM has more buttons but there are too many with the same shape and too close together which makes it hard to differentiate by feel. And of course, the lousy exclusion of dedicated transport keys. They really need to come out with a model 9500 that includes these keys. To get around this, I've moved the transport keys for ALL devices to the bottom of the remote and always use the directional keys for cursor control only. Not ideal since those buttons at the bottom are so small, but it does work OK.

I'm definately going to keep this remote though because it does handle basic functions of the Sherwood receiver (unlike the 15-1994) and has tons of memory for future devices that may not have pre-programmed codes. As long as it doesn't break, I should be fine for the foreseeable future - plus my wife is tired of having to learn how to use a new remote every 6 months like I've been doing to her lately ;-)
