Strength:

Many options and progammable to the max.

Weakness:

Preset defaults are not always similar to existing device remotes. Learning function does not always operate properly.

I had been using a Radio Shack 6 in 1 unit. I did not like the fact you could not see the buttons in a dark room, and they are not designed in different sizes to be readable by feel, so I decided to risk a little money and try the One for All AV Producer 8. I have mixed reaction to this unit. On the one hand, it is versatile. It includes functions that the Radio Shack does not have, such as PIP controls. It is also similar in its Home Theater mode. The keys are organized in such a way that you can access them in a darkened room without having to hit the backligting first. However...I do not like the calbe/sat mode at all. I have a General Instruments cable box. I am used to the cable control buttons operating menus and selecting programs in a particular manner that is not at all like the default settings for this unit. For instance, there is no "info" button in the default position (the button that brings up information about the program, such as plot summary, actors, etc.). YOu have to program one of the other buttons to do this. No biggie, but it requires reconfiguring all of the buttons (which, fortunately, can be done). Also the center of the menu grid is preset to cycle throught favorites, rather than as the "select" button. I also found that the learning function is a bit iffy. On several occasions the remote indicated that it had successfully learned a function, but it would not do what it was supposed to do. I am going to continue to work with this unit, but I would have to recommend the Radio Shack successor to the 1994 as easier to program and easier to use, even if the buttons are annoyingly monochromatic and all the same size.

Strength:

Versatile Solid Build Quality

Weakness:

Should use AA batteries A little power hungry

I have had this remote control since February of 2001. For the most part, this is an excellent product. The biggest selling point is the IR/RF receiver transmitter that allows control from other rooms. For the couch potato, it is excellent because you don''t have to even remotely (pun intended) aim it at your components. Because the control unit was stolen in July of this year, I now have the luxury of 2 IR/RF receivers. Cool! Setting up the unit is a little trying, but worth the effort. I''m glad I have this unit because the original remote control for my Onkyo Integra 6.2 receiver didn''t make it back when the unit was sent for repairs. Unlike other reviewers, I like the LCD. The back light is very nice in the dark. The unit is a little big and bulky, but does have a nice quality feel to it. Given the size of the unit, it really should use AA batteries not the AAA. It''s very versatile and well worth the money. Also worth the effort it takes to program it, and learn how to set up the learning buttons and macros. This would make an excellent gift for the "person who has everything", including 5-6 remotes that they''re tripping over all the time!

The best $40 I have ever spent. Instead of 6 remotes I am now down to one! I have been able to completely control everything in my home theater AND THEN SOME! (My DVD player has hidden features that are not accessable with the standard remote - the allforone gives me access!) I love the "Theater" mode which allows me to turn everything on/off with only one press of the power button. Another great feature is that I do not have to manually switch between components with the remote, when press the vol keys it knows to control the AMP, when I press the chan keys it knows to control the satellite receiver..etc.etc.. Of course this is all customizable to the users taste.

Strength:

Backlight & RF

Weakness:

Center of Gravity, JVC DVD, Website

I had to learn three of its 6 scratch pad buttons to work Play, Pause & Stop on JVC DVD player. Could not move learned buttons to obvious keys. RF works well. Support from website was bizarre. Even though I kept asking for help on the AV-8 with RF (model URC9800B) they kept giving me help from some other model. I waited six months and asked for help again. The new help department (they were bought by someone) gave me codes and procedures that matched the 9800B but it still couldn't command the JVC DVD.

It works an RCA TV, a Pioneer LaserDisc Player, a Sony VCR, a Sharp VCR, a General Instrument Digital Cable Box, a Sony CD jukebox, and an AWIA CD/Cassette/Receiver just fine. The JVC triple DVD player is a pain for this thing, however.

I'm ditching the AV-8 for a Pronto.

I had to order mine but haven't received it yet so I'll let you know how I liked it. The reason I'm writing now is to let anybody looking for advanced codes that they might find help on an excellent sight I found. I used it, as well as this site, to get info about URC's. Check out http://www.remotecentral.com. If you don't find it here then good luck.

Strength:

Great flexibility and growth potential

Weakness:

Some features didnt work with some of my components - units were unreliable

I have had two of these remotes and ultimately decided to trade the last one in for something else.

I loved the backlighting and the LCD display. Very easy to use. Unfortunately, both of the remotes I had failed within a month of having them: they just quit working. Also, several features of the romote would not work with my components: especially my DirecTV SAT. The remote was also a little bulky for my taste.

I've had One For All remotes before and have been very pleased; unfortunately, I was dissappointed in the craftsmanship on this one.

Strength:

Relatively inexpensive, has good macro keys, is well laid out.

Weakness:

None really

I bought this remote on a whim, but I have to say that I have stuck with it longer than any other remote I've ever had. Apparently some reviewers got bad units, but mine has worked flawlessly for almost a year now. The keys are where you want them, and you don't have to look to make use of the usual ones line volume and channel. The remote both comes with many codes and you can download new ones as they become necessary. The macro keys are plentiful enough that I have been able to set up one key to turn on my TV, my stereo, my DVD player, and to set them all to the right function; another key to do the same for my VCR; and still another key to set up the basic CD functions. Finally, I have been able to work around an awkward two-keystroke function in my VCR by combining both of them in a single key. There is a limit to the memory, and neither the manual nor the web site is very helpful about how to deal with this problem. Once simply has to work through trial and error to eliminate less needed codes for more important ones. But I arrived at that limit only after almost everything was programmed just as I wanted it. To be able to do any better, you'd have to spend quite a bit more for a remote that was less well ergonomically designed. The remote doesn't eat batteries either.

Strength:

Has many pre-programmed functions, key mover is excellent when using more than one device at a time, home theater button is also excellent, two macro keys, learns up to 48 separate functions, excellent overall.

Weakness:

Unfortunately quality control obviously not very good. (see remarks)

I want to start by saying this is a great remote for the money. Having said that, One For All obviously has poor quality control as I am on my third remote. The first one kept loosing the programmed functions out of the program keys. The second one lost all functions and quit altogether. The third one has been excellent so far. If the product did not work so well I would have just taken my money back after the second one. I read the reveiws after mine and others have had similar problems. People who have wrote about its size and clumsyness are nit-picking, what do you expect when you can operate 8 separate devices and learn 48 functions. I would highly recommend this remote but hopefully you get a good one on your first try.

Strength:

powerful customization, pretty blue backlight

Weakness:

unintuitive programming, few learnable keys

This is an update from my previous review which was very negative.

In my latest effort I was finally able to speak with a competent rep who walked me through a number of arcane programming procedures not found in the manual. And voila! My remote now operates all my home theatre equipment. Not only that, she was able to customize the functions for particular buttons I requested.

So I'm changing my rating to reflect that the product works as I had originally expected, but what a journey it was to get there!
