Strength:

Completely programmable - can control anything.
Completely flexible - you can change the interface, graphics, buttons, etc. Any button can trigger a series of macros.
Big Pronto community at www.remotecentral.com - get codes, graphics, ideas.
Looks cool.

Weakness:

Programming IS required - out of the box it don't do much.
Price is competitive with other overpriced remotes.

This is one of the best purchases I've made, simply because it makes using my system a joy.

Outrageously flexible remote that, given the time and effort programming it, can do anything - with style. Particularly appropriate for controlling home theater gear with easy "Watch TV" or "Watch DVD" type graphical buttons, which makes complex system setups easy to use for guests, spouses, and even yourself.

The only downside is that you DO need to spend time programming this thing. The software is relatively easy to use, but it would be nice to have the auto-setup capabilities of the HK/MSFT Take Control and THEN have the Pronto's flexibility to modify it afterwards. Nothing's perfect.

I bought mine for $300 from a local store price matching J&R, and despite my love for the thing, I still consider it expensive.

Strength:

Will replace ALL your remotes. Strong IR signal. Very customizable.

Weakness:

A little slippery. I'm always afraid I'm going to drop it. The Pronto Edit software took some getting use to. I can't imagine even trying that program if I wasn't used to doing "computer stuff."

I bought this remote on Ebay from a reputable Pronto dealer about 4 months ago and I've never regretted it. I haven't had a problem with it yet. It's worked flawlessly. It has a very strong IR signal-usually works better that the original remote for several of my components. It's very customizable with the Pronto Edit software although it took a while to get going with that program. But once you get the hang of it, you wonder why you had difficulty in the first place. It definitely has been one of my favorite purchases. I don't think I could live without it now. And if you have DirecTV you definitely won't be able to do without it because it allows you to personalize and categorize ALL those channels. It's a definite "must have" if you have a lot of components in your home theatre set-up!

Strength:

Strong IR signal, Total system control, Great macros great programing and it's easy to use.

Weakness:

LCD could be brighter

Buy this one! I've used several of the other brands systemremotes but they don't even come close! Replaced my EAD Encore remote and outperformed the Sony RM-AV2000 and H/K TC1000. I love the makro feature and to import graphics is fun and easy.

Strength:

WOW factor, ease of programming, great versatility

Weakness:

Screen brightness needs constant adjusting, DAMN constant rebooting

Found this (TS1000) on EBAY with cradle brand new for 208.00 delivered. Couldn't pass it up (especially for an MSRP with cradle of 500.00). Love the versatitily to be able to personalize to yourself. HATE the fact it reboots itself at least 2-3 times daily. Don't know what the deal is with that. Other than for what I spend on it, I guess I can't complain too much. If I had paid full retail though I would have been more P/O'd probably.

Strength:

Designed with ease of use, flexibility, intuitiveness that no other remote other than the Marantz MC5000 comes close to meeting. The way all hand held remotes should be done. Custom Macros, internet support, great enthusiam by the public.

Weakness:

not copied enough by other manufacturers, expensive, but nobody can do it better.

A remote control in a home theater environment is every bit as important as the components it controls. Intuitiveness, programability, and yes public enthusiam for the remote is pentamount to its' success or demise. The Pronto TS-1000 has most definately the most superior designed product to hit I.R. reciever sensors in a long time. Up to the Marantz RC-2000, remotes were non back lit all same size button nightmares. Don't think that a touch screen U.I. automatically garantees success. The Sony remotes are prime examples. The remote that comes with the TAE-9000es is how remotes should never be done. Poor back light, weak contrast, battery hungry, and worst of all needs 2 hands to operate, and has that easy to lose stylus too. The Pronto is a dull off teal color that fits in one hand, and has a glass touch screen that has macro driven command software. By the way, the latest software upgrade is here on the Philips website that doesn't wipe out your settings..thank you Philips. The Pronto edit software allows to create your own customer Macro,or control panels . Remarkable how it is to have a company show such care in design and execution. Notice that there is nothing ill willed to say against it, because Philips did their homework. Make that remote simple, easy to view, and make work with anything you throw at it. My brother has one and waxes enthusiastic praise for this wonderbox. He is not a techo nut,so that is great praise indeed. I just bought mine today for all my gear. Sure I paid allot, but the return in its ease of use and flexibility, and power of the I.R. beam, will make it a member of my gear compliment for a long time. Yes, you can bounce the signal almost in any direction and the Pronto still sends a reliable signal everytime. I am impressed with Philips' little gadget here and recommend anybody who has been invaded by the multitude remote controls, stop by thier Philips dealer and purchase this gem. Your home theater and audio setup will be fun to use again. Just think of all those batteries you don't need either. If you are a real remote junky, buy the optional charging station. The station like the remote works great too. Nice to see thoughtful engineering fit in the palm of my hand. Very nice job Philips. V.C.

Strength:

Just plain cool. Makes even a modest home theater system seem slightly more high tech. My wife can use it.(HUGE plus here)

Weakness:

Not much that I have found. Wish there was an option to unload the database from the TSU2000 to free up the additional memory. Maybe battery usage is a little extreme. (solved with a charger unit)

Please not that my review of this product centers around the use of Pronto Edit and the remote's abilities given this software. I bought the remote over the weekend and have been configuring it since I bought it. I enjoy tinkering with things likes this so it has been fun getting everything to work.

The product is overall easy to use. An example of this happened when I bought the remote and was on the way home. In a matter of seconds I had configured the Tuner component on the default install to run my brother's car stereo. I tormented him for about 20 minutes before he realized his car stereo wasn't broken. *chuckle* In the house, it recognized the TV, the DVD, and the AV, though not all functionality worked right. I could not get the Scientific American cable set-top box to work with the three codes given. All in all it was a good first impression.

Now, lets talk about the other intangibles. My wife understands it. This is not to say that all women can't grasp home theater remotes; thats not true. My wife, however, is not too technically savvy, so when she and I configured the screens and she was able to play DVDs, select the right soundtrack, and get the TV on the component video inputs, I was happy. In the coming days I am going to setup timers and such to make the entire operation occur within 1 - 3 buttons. This remote allows you to custom configure it for each member of your family, which is something not many other remotes can do.

I love this thing.

Fully programmable and downloadable...for most common and not so common applications..internet website support and user groups

Weakness:

Jog shuttle for dvd and vcr....(no big deal)!

I just got this unit 3 days ago...($375 locally)
Nice looks..nice feel...very kewl to play with!
I have programmed all of the features that I normally use into this unit...(which includes tons of dsp modes on my receiver)...and,I have yet to discover all that it can do.
Kind of expensive for a remote, but the trade off is that the 7 other remotes that once cluttered my center table, now reside in the kingdom of dust bunnies!(somewhere in the deep in the stomach of my crawl space!)...
I also purchased the optional recharging unit with the lithium battery($75)...very kewl...and worth it...(yea!..no more AA's!)
If you can look past price to gain conveinence....then I
highly recommend this unit

Strength:

Overall design, control capabilities thru programming (ProntoEdit), range (distance) of remote).

Weakness:

Horrible Technical Support, very weak manual, defective product.

Maybe I'm being picky, but when I purchase a product for $375, I really do expect it to work. Unfortunately, this was not the case with the Pronto I received.
Strengths:
1. Philips did an outstanding job designing this remote. From what I COULD do with it, it's flexibility is truly beyond compare. For example, you can "program" it to do the following by pressing one (1) single button; turn on TV, set input (EG. video 1), turn on receiver, choose DVD on receiver, set audio (Dolby 5.1), turn on DVD, open DVD tray, run "TIMER" (to allow YOU to get up - load DVD and sit back down), close DVD tray and start playing!
2. Customizeable displays. You can literally design your own graphics interface. This DOES require the ProntoEdit software and your PC.
3. SmarthomeUSA.com is where I purchased the device from. For the record, I am VERY HAPPY with their service. They are totally innocent of the problems I've encountered with this device.

Weaknesses:
1. The manual covers the device itself pretty well. It only references the ProntEdit tool and shows a few examples of what can be done.
2. ProntoEdit and the accompanying manual must be acquired through Philip's website. This is obviously acceptable for those of us who have PC's and an internet connection. What about the millions that don't? It is IMPOSSIBLE to customize any of the screens using the Pronto itself without ProntoEdit.
3. The remote hasn't worked properly from the time I took it out of the box. You must understand that this device is in reality a hand-held computer not too different from say, a PalmPilot. It has it's own memory and operating system. As a result, this device CAN be rebooted just like a PC! And there-in lies the problem with the device I have. The damn thing KEEPS REBOOTING! No matter what I do (or did as recommended by Pronto support), this problem can not be fixed. Which leads to item 4.
4. Technical Support for this device seems to be pretty weak (at least in helping correct MY problem). I have used nothing but e-mail to communicate with Tech. Support; and I do readily admit that they were very responsive. Message turn-around averaged about 4-6 hours; not too shabby. Unfortunately, they have NO history of this problem on record (until now). So - I'm stuck for now. The ONLY recourse that I have is to return the device to where I purchased it and WAIT for another batch to be shipped; which leads to item 5.
5. Availability is truly poor for this device. I'm wondering if Philips is holding inventory back just to keep the price of the Pronto artificially high? My place of purchase has stated that they will make me a priority (top of the list) to ship out a replacement device; once they receive the defective one.

Caveit emptor!

Controls everything in my arsenal

Weakness:

None so far

I have been fustrated with remotes for quite a while. I had a living room filled with different remote. The Sony remote I had was nice but quite bulky and would not control some items.

Needless to say I brought the Pronto with some hesitations. It cost 399.95 plus 79.00 for the docking station. That is alot of money to spend, but I am sure glad I did.

I am now able to control my whole system with a touch of a few buttons. The macros are working great, Love that delay button. I am in heaven and do not regret buying this litle gem.

I was able to connect to remotecontrol.com and download some functions into my little friend. Worth every penny .

Strength:

Versatility, WIFE LOVES IT!

Weakness:

Once I got hooked on customizing the configuration, I spent late nights for almost 1 month. The results, however, were worth it.

A must have, if you have equipment with remotes (only my Nakamichi RX-505 tape deck doesn't), and you are annoyed by the remotes accumulating all over the house. After I upgraded my Lexicon DC-1 to version 4 and they provided me with yet another "upgraded" remote, I bought the Pronto. I then spent 1 month configuring the .ccf with prontoedit before even putting batteries into the remote. I relied heavily on Remotecentral.com (pick your favorite configuration and tweak it to your needs). To add interesting elements to your configuration, find a graphic using the altavista.com graphics search engine and alter it as a bitmap using your microsoft paint utility (it was included with my basic Windows 98 O.S.). The result, after downloading the configuration into the Pronto and learning the IR commands, was spectacular! I can surf the cable TV using channel icons or surf categories (like "sports" or "news"), and select my 200 CDs by artist, music type, or CD number.

The only problem I encountered was a difficulty in learning the Lexicon DC-1 IR commands. So I downloaded another CCF from remotecentral which had the DC-1 IR commands, and simply copied them into mine. I must also agree that the documentation included with the pronto is insufficient and should be improved.

If you are at all technologically inclined, GET THIS REMOTE!
