Strength:

Easy to use and set up.

Weakness:

None

This remote is awesome. I finally found a remote to control my system. I went from 6 remotes to 1 in my living room and from 5 to 1 in my bedroom. I can control my mini-system and my PS2. I recommend this remote.

Strength:

Learns everything, price

Weakness:

Doesn't work well with my components

I recently upgraded my A/V system from Denon to separates and needed a remote that was easy for the wife and kids to use. I previously used a OnForAll AV Producer 8 to which was truely a no brainer remote. It controlled everything seemlessly. My new Parasound AVC-1800 preamp on the other hand could not be controlled by it. So, I began my search. I bought the Sony based on reviews and I have to admit I really liked it. I was able to setup all my remotes in it.
BUT. I had several problems with it; not all of them were the fault of the remote.
The first problem was with my Rotel RCD-951 CD player. When changing tracks the signal must be sent too long and causes the player to skip ahead 2 or 3 tracks. I could not resolve this.
The next problem was with the preamp volume and power settings. The volume would only go up/down by repeated volumn pressing. Just holding it down would not send the volume up/down. I'm not sure what the problem is with this one. The preamp also has On / Off buttons instead of one power button. I therefore had to program one of the specail macro keys as the off button. Needless to say my wife and kids were not thrilled with this. No fault of the remote.
Unfortunatly, I returned the remote. I am giving this remote high marks. It is one of the best, easiest, and most flexible remote that I have seen. If it had worked my volume correctly I would have kept it.

Strength:

great all around remote

Weakness:

minimal

This truely is the "remote commander." I have put my 7 other remotes away. This remote is very easy to program. It gives you tons of options. Worth every penny.

Once you realize ytou can program your most used functions anywhere it is great. I put my cable box channel up and down on the TV, CABL, AMP, VCR. So nomatter which button I am on I can change the channel. I put the AMP volume on the CABL, VCR, DVD, TV, CD, MD(CD-R). It is the lazy mans dream. It can really streamline your button pushing on the remote. I used one of the macros to shut everything off-it makes life easier. It is a dream when you fall asleep on the couch and just want to stumble to bed- no need to focus or think just push one button and ZZZZZZZZZZ.

There are only a few nitpicky drawbacks. I would like a couple more macros. I would like to see some special fuction buttons so you don't have to remember which oddball key you programed your 5chl stero on, and which one to shut it off.

Weakness:

Channel and volume buttons could be a little higher up on the remote but is not really a problem to operate one handed because of it's weight.

This is an awesome remote. It does everything I want it to and probably a lot more. It controls my Yamaha receiver, Dish Network (Echostar) receiver, Panasonic VCR, and Toshiba TV and DVD player almost flawlessly by just programming the manufacturer codes. The few buttons that don't automatically work are easily learned. Want to control your receiver volume while in DVD mode? Easy. Want to move the channel selector for the Dish receiver? No problem.

If you want a handheld computer to impress your friends, this ain't it. If you want an affordable remote that will eliminate 5-8 remote controls and give you back your coffee table, this is it.

Weakness:

No back light, button placement

So far, so good! Really like the functionality of this product. I do agreee that the volume/channel buttons are awkwardly placed, they need to be more centrally located, IMHO. Even though the codes for my Panasonic VCR & TV and NAD DVD were not listed, the search feature had me up and running in just a few minutes! QUESTION: Anyone using the VL900 with a NAD receiver? I have the 761 and can not get it to learn even one single function!?! Think this is an NAD deal, had the same problem with the previous two remotes. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Strength:

Price, flexibility, Easy to program

Weakness:

No backlight keys, Position of channel and volume buttons

Ditto what everyone has already written. This is truly a universal remote. It controls every component I own (6) flawlessly. Very easy to program. I don't like the position of the channel and volume buttons though. They should have been placed more towards the center. This is just a minor flaw IMO. Don't think you need to spend hundreds on a universal remote when this model does it all for $50 (delivered!). I think I'm going to buy a few more just so I'll always have this gem around.

Strength:

Learns everything.....i mean EVERYTHING !

Weakness:

No backlight keys

After spending about 2 days with the av2100(touchscreen) i realised i just wasted almost $200. If you want a fancy remote that you want to show off, get the av2100. If you want a real convenient value priced and effective remote control get this one VL900. I used the touchcreen for a while and personally i think it takes the joy out of covenience. It is too big and not intuitive at all.
I returned it and got this one, best move I've done all year ! Its size is pleasantly familiar ( in remote control world) it learns everything in site, everything. Had a problem with the scan command on my remote, you had to keeping it tapping it..just erased the button and learned it again, this time holding the scan button down for an extra 2 secs and voila it woked perfectly.
It has replaced 7 remotes , yes 7 !!
All I can say is if u want something that would get the job done and haas the familiar feel you want when changing settings o a dark movie nite get this one.
On the other hand you might just want to impress your friends then get the av2100, dont worry that it is just clumsy as hell, it still looks good !
Look no futher, nothing else at the price and above beats this for value and convenience !

Strength:

Learning Function, ruberized corners, glowing buttons.

Weakness:

Heavy with 4 AA batries in. No LED screen like on the $30 non learning model. Not back lit.

This is a great remote. It learned my components with ease and little frustration. I had working well all my components until I sold my Carver A/V receiver and got a Yamaha with a learning remote. So far I have spent maybe 10 minutes trying to get it to learn the newest remote with no luck. I am guessing it's operator error because it has done so much for me thus far. This remote will keep the wife happy when you put all the remotes in a drawer and only have 1 on the coffee table. It also has a pretty strong transmitter. All in all a great unit for $60 bucks! Good job Sony.

Wish it had more buttons.

I was very pleased with how easy it was to setup. My only complaint is that I wished it had more a few more buttons. All in all, a very nice remote. Can't beat the price.

Strength:

Learns EVERYTHING! Easy to setup and use

Weakness:

no backlight;commonly used keys (channel return, volume) are low on the remote (minor inconvenience)

This is the best value for the dollar remote I have ever purchased. It learns everything and lets me choose how I want to set up macros etc. Controlled most of my devices with no modification/programming. Great!
