As a previous owner of Adcom equipment I can only say that most if not ALL there products are not!! musical,or enjoyable in any way,I had purchased due to reviews in magazines. There are other companies that are making musical equipment in that price range, and less. Listen with your EARS not what you read in a book!!

The Adcom 555/565 preamps were overpriced "DUAL OP-AMPS" pre-amps. In my humble opion and experience, their line-amp stage can be improved by replacing the OP-AMP with AD812 (current op-amp). I am glad to see that Adcom had finally dropped them, but the new 750 (with 100% discreet mosfet circuitry)is getting close to the $1,500, is it worth the money? The NAD 1000 and 106 have much better circuit design in both the phono and line-amp stages. Their sonic performance were similar to the old Hafler 110.

I have owned my Adcom GFP-555II PRE-AMP for about 6 years.I have it matched up with an Adcom GFA-555 AMP not to be confused with the GFA-555II,also for about 6 years. Since I have had them, I've never felt the need to upgrade. My brother is an audiophile and he has owned them all from Marantz-McIntosh. And they have all lived in stereo repair shops. My adcom has never failed, not once has it ever broke down and it has always sounded GREAT! Why spend more money for "so-called" higher end equipment just so they can sound great for 6 months? And be in the shop for 6 months?

Could someone please explain to me what you are refering to. Adcom does not sell a product numbered GTP-555. Did I miss something? They make a GFP-555 preamp and a GTP-550 tuner/preamp. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A GTP-555!I do know one thing GFP=GREAT F----ING PRODUCT!
(*5 star for adcom in general)

Maybe I got a lemon, but my GFA555II sounded 400% better with other pre-amps than the integrated, murky GFP-555. I tried replacement units, but this model made a compressed sondstage. It cost $650 retail, built-in [weak] tuner].
The separates Adcom makes are obviously far superior.
1 star!

I have owned a GTP 550 for around 3 years now. I always thought Adcom had decent audio equipment for the money. I auditioned a used Conrad Johnson PV 12 last week and it just blew the Adcom away. I heard details with the CJ I never heard with the Adcom. The soundstage seemed so much deeper and so much more precise. The bass from the CJ was solid instead of mushy like the Adcom. I wish I would have saved my money and bought a CJ 3 years ago. The dealer only offered me $150 for the GTP 550 on trade-in for the CJ. I said "what?". I paid $800 new for the Adcom 3 years ago and the thing is still in mint condition with boxes and manual. I guess I put the Adcom in my bedroom or something and use it to put me to sleep.

I owned a GFP-555 mk.II preamp (no tuner)...this was the supposed audiophile series. Paid $699 for it in Sept. 96. At the time I had Cambrige Soundworks ensemble speakers. These are not very revealing, esp., the midrange and treble are nothing like what there is out there in accurate speakers. the Adcom was fine on features and ergonomics and it had a phono stage which was convenient. But when I bought new speakers (Castles) the Adcom preamp was totally unlistenable!! Perhaps the Castles are unusually revealing. But SAVE YOUR MONEY for a better preamp. If you're going to get this preamp, might as well get a cheaper model with a tuner, then expect to be disappointed with the sound if your speakers are decent. Or get a passive preamp, like the Creek OBH-12, which actually sounded pretty good with these speakers and the ADCOM amp. The amps are not amazing but they're not unlistenable. As long as they are not mated with an ADCOM preamp. However, at this price point most active preamps are going to make your ears bleed. So spend more if you can.
DOWN WITH PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE AND PRICE POINT-ORIENTED CONSUMER MARKETING...IT IS SUCH A WASTE. MAke sure you listen carefully!!

Perhap's Adcom has changed hands, but I've been using a GFP 555 since
the late 80's with a variety of different amplifiers, and some very revealing speakers including large electrostatic's and I've always been
extremely happy with it and I've yet to experience a problem.

If we are talking about the 555 amp, I must agree that it is stiff. It was sold based on the reputation of the 545, which still has adherents. (I use one with my TV.)
Let's take everything in context. At the time (and compared to Carver (a mass appeal monster,) the money wouldn't buy anything comparable.

(And face it. Speakers back then were not nearly what physics has wroght today.)

As a new entry in home audio my GTP-550 paired with their GFA 5400 and Castle Harlechs, sounds wonderful. And despite having a large living room w/ cathedral ceilings the sound is full and warm with good imaging. I demo'd a couple more expensive pre-amps and the Adcom sounded just as well or better for my taste. Kudos to Adcom.
