Strength:

Beside anything ..is the sound is like your there live in a concert.

Weakness:

HUh?

what can i say about this great pre-amp. First its built like a tank. sounds crsip, warm, and accurte from cds to movies. I love the ways it looks, You can programmed anything on the front display to say 'My hide out" or something like that. B&k used very high quility parts including working with motorola and ADA devices. The best thing is the price on the used market is less than 1/3 of what other pay for orginal ($1800) ouch. I would buy this again in a heartbeart.

Strength:

Simple to use. I set up presets and used my brother p-touch to make lables for the remote. Now when my wife wants to set it up to watch a movie she hits 1 - enter. To listen to cd she hits 2 -enter. Very simple to use, although a little cryptic to set up.

Weakness:

No S jack, so I don't use it for video switching.

I purchased the 1030 for $140 on ebay!!! I listen mainly to music with some casual movie watching. I've got an ATI 1506 (bridged front chanels) and they sound wonderful together. Fantastic vocal reproduction. Solid bass(very solid, and tight), could use a little more high extension, but I blame that on the ATI. I think I got a great find.

Strength:

Low/No noise floor. Clean look. Quite decent amount of connections. Detacheable power cord.

Weakness:

Remote

I bought this unit several years ago to replace my Acurus Act-3 that give me too much hiss and humming. Lots of AV inputs and outputs. Where the AVP1030 really shines is in 2-channel playback. "Direct" mode gives the best unadulterated audio playback. Minimal DSP functions. But then that''s a positive in my opinion.

Strength:

Very clean and low-noise reproduction.

Weakness:

No 5.1 analog inputs or DYS decoding

This is a superbly built A/V preamp/tuner from a first class manufacturer. A number of these have surfaced on the used market and if Digital Dolby and stereo reproduction are all that is needed, look no further. The original list price was nearly $200 and mine was had for only about 25% of that! The preamp is far superior to receivers anywhere near the price and it is relatively easy to use even though it lacks an on-screen display. Give it a try if one turns up - it really performs well.

I did a close compare between a Adcom GFP-565/Adcom GDA-600 vs. B&K-1030.You would have to be hard-pressed to critically listen for details. The Adcom
combo musically had more of an "open" top-end, and little bit more of bass solidity. (The amp was a B&K ST-1400). But let's get real serious: the B&K AVP-1030 is a HT pre/pro. It may not have high-frequency detail, but it's got all the A/V inputs/outputs you would positively need. Overall it has a clean sound, with a solid soundstage. The setup menus seems a little daunting, and owners manual somewhat sketchy, but the hardware is good. Tuner needs a little more capture. I would buy this unit again (but now I'm upgrading to another B&K pre/pro)

I bought this unit a month ago. When I hooked it up at home I was happy (possibly 4 stars). The system had a Harman/Kardon CD player with Silverlink cables, and a B&K EX4430 powering ADS L400's + Velodyne F1200R(Powered Sub). Things really got better when I recently changed the H/K CD player to Sony DVD DVPS700. I connected the player to the B&K 1030 using Monster silver digital coaxial M1000D1M. This utilizes the B&K 1030's internal 18 bit D to A convertor. The difference in sound quality is astounding. The detail is incredible. I am hearing instruments in music that I didn't notice before. The Dolby Digital processing is excellent. I would recommend this pre-amp to anyone who is looking in the price range. Sure you could get a better pre-amp for more money, but you would be spending at least twice as much. I have never been so satisfied with an upgrade as I am with the AVP 1030.

I have the 2030 model which has 2 zones and S conectors. I had a adcom GSA700 for use as a preamp. There is no comparison at all. The B&K is warm with great imaging and soundstage. Overall great performance. The one quirk I have is the menu and remote. They are not that easy to use and it took me 3-4 days to get use to. Overall great sound.

Overall this piece is very good. I found the tuner reception a little on the weak side compared to my Sony tuner(ES series separate component). Also, I felt the price was a little steep. Compared to other high end (and higher priced) pre-amps, I think it's a good value for the money.

Excellent Unit! Cutting edge technology! Has everything that a realistic audiophile could want in a a audio/video preamplifier. A very solid and "no non-sense" built unit that offers the quality features rather than non-usefull bells and whistles. All American made! To top it all, it comes with a (5) five year warranty. A Stereophile Magazine's "Recommended"!
