Could someone send me software version 2.01 upgrade?!

I've purchased the ta-e9000 and the ta-n9000 for a total of $1,640(it was a floor model). I updated it to the 1.18c version (which sony claims to be it's newest version)and would like to have the 2.01 if anyone could send it to me i'd greatly appreciate it! At first when I bought the setup they gave me the wrong remote (rm-tp504e, it was mean't for the str-v555es receiver) and this remote didn't work with the preamp so I searched the web, did some research and realized that I needed the rm-501e so I went back to where i bought this and got the right one (which isn't no where near as good as the 504). I just called sony and they said that there's no way to upgrade the remote to do what the rm-504e is capable of doing and people on this page say that they got a new remote from sony... well... what changes are there from the original one that you got with the preamp? Please get back to me my e-mail address if Aqua1178@aol.com

Strength:

Sound and value

Weakness:

None now, well maybe Sony Support.

Well folks, I've installed the software version 2.01, and I have concluded Sony has raised the bar again on this stellar unit. This new software upgrade has completely eliminated the digital harshness most find evident in 2 channel digital sound. Its like me buying a new pre-amp. I am more impressed than ever with its sonic suaveness and value. Get this upgrade. While it has other features like a high cut filter for the low frequency, its biggest improvement is in the sound of 2 channel music.

Strength:

Great look and feel. Very User friendly.

Weakness:

Horrible hissing sound. Uselesss remote.

I just want to say this unit is very disappointing. I had struggled with its hissing sound for several weeks and tried two units but no change. I also went to several audio stores and their display units also made an audible hissing sound. Replaced all of my interconnects, bought a power line conditioner and after all of that effort the obvious design defect still was present.

Now, I understand that this has been a problem with this unit from the start. The firmware upgrade helped a little but still the unit makes a level of noise that is not appparent in other comparable brands.

I did like everything else about the Sony, but I just couldn't accept the high noise floor, and even at its deeply discounted price ($1,099)it was no bargin.

Finally, I bought a Marantz AV9000. It delivered everything I was looking for in the Sony for about $400 more dollars. No hiss at all, superior remote, on screen programing and at superior audio performance.

In closing I would have to give this gem the lowest rating possible. What a waste of my time and about a $100 in shipping costs. Sony should wake up and pay attention to the basic details. Their tech support area told me the unit I had was defective. What a joke. I had two bad units and listened to at least two other units in stores and they all had the same problem.

So if you are looking for a cheap preamp take a close look at the Sony and remember...you only get what you pay for!!!

Strength:

Solid build, versatility, performance

Weakness:

The remote, natch

When it came time to replace my aging Carver preamp (complete with "Sonic Holography" no less), I turned to this forum for assistance. I had lusted after a Denon AVP-8000, but at $3500 it was just too expensive. The B&K Ref 20 was a possible contender. Looking for another alternative, the overwhelming buzz here was for the Sony 9000ES.

I have mixed feelings about Sony: first-rate cosmetics, satisfactory technology, questionable reliability. However, I set my doubts aside and snagged a 9000ES in February of 1999. This unit came with the original "no name" firmware, and I upgraded to both the 1.10C and, now, 1.18C. I use the 9000ES for stereo audio as much as for home theater. With the 1.18C upgrade, I am ready to join the chorus of 5 star ratings.

1.18 has done just what has been reported: warmer, more detailed sound; tamed treble output (critical with my Klipsch Forte IIs), open sound stage. Yes, the speakers do disappear, much as Sonic Holography attempted. Sony appears to have this unit completely dialed in now, but I look forward to the next firmware upgrade, if there is one. Of course, the remote is ghastly, but I just replace my rechargables every 10 days and put up with it.

If you're looking for a new preamp/processor, you won't go wrong with the 9000ES. Just make sure it has the 1.18C firmware, or that you are comfortable installing it yourself.

For what it's worth, here's what's on the rack:

Strength:

quality of construction

Weakness:

Lack of adequate customer technical support

I agree totally with Jonathan; Sony's response to the 1.18C issue is patronizing at best. The customer service dep't never responded to two of my emails, and calls resulted in a total lack of knowledge about the problem.

I STRONGLY suggest as many people as possible email sony to get them to place the correct, 1.18c version on their site; the group at SONY responsible for this I am told is the "ESC GROUP". There is a place on the SONY site to email customer "support", and maybe with enough customer complaining they will correct the problem.

Strength:

Great sound.

Weakness:

The remote.

I bought this Pre Amp to upgrade to DTS, get more video switching, and get one remote to control my whole system. It did the job on the first two but I never quite warmed up to the remote. I took this into factory service center a total of three times to have the remote upgraded and to address the software upgrade issues. The first two times it was there two weeks at a time the third time for six weeks while they came up with a software solution that allowed the remote to acsess the top range of the equalizer. After I picked it up the last time I just left it in the box, only have one DTS DVD and the sound while exellent didn`t blow away the Denons digital processing and the Fosgate is more versatile with analog sources. If only the remote was on par with pre amp I would have tore my system apart and put it back in.

So... I sold it on ebay with a total of 10-15 hours on it for $900 and I`m waiting to see if the deal goes through. If not maybe I`ll list it again or try to get a remote that will do what I thought this one should have. My wife got a Marantz RC5000 for me for Christmas but I returned it because I had already planned to sell this and I`m not crazy about the LCD screen remotes. Maybe the RC2000MKII.

Anyway, great sounding Pre Amp that just dosn`t make it over the top for me because of the remote. Why couldn`t Sony just take the extra step and give this the remote it deserves? It would make it untouchable for the money.

Strength:

Build quality, sanity of control system, presence and natural detail of surround sound system, price.

Weakness:

ARRRRRRRRGGGGHHH! The remote (RM-TP501E). ARRRRRRRRGGGGHHH!
Couldn't you at least have it learn?!?

Lack of analog passthru (what were you thinking?).

As others have attested, this is an attractive sounding unit. At $1222USD double boxed and delivered, it is also an absolute steal (www.unclestereo.com, I talked to Andy).

The lack of analog passthru is truly disappointing. The rated harmonic distortion (0.05%, w/eq and surround bypassed) is astronomical for a preamp only in the 2000 dollar and up range. The sound is however very good anyway.

MYGOD, why inflict this remote on the world? Interestingly, the 9000 has a 2Way/2Way+1Way setting under Other Settings . The manual recommends the Sony RMPP402 as the non-2Way remote of choice, and states that it is not usually available in stores. Further, the manual states that "You can program the remote codes of the non-2 way remote commmander to the ordinally learning remote commander that is available in the market."

Attention Sony Marketing LAMERS; once you pass the the 750 dollarUSD price point, for a preamp alone, you should put your best foot forward on the remote. Clearly, mostly men purchase this device by far. Men, as men can tell you, love a good remote *almost* as much as they hate a bad one. Why should I have to spend another 300USD on a proper LCD remote right out of the box? Yes, I have the *New and Improved" remote. What did the owners of the first pathetic attempt do when they saw what their money got them? I can't even think about it . .

Ahem. That aside, and pointing out that I am indeed a nervous remote user, the 9000, even with it's half-wit, hunch-backed, can't-get-it-done, U-dumb-asses-U, bad-penny-of-a-remote is still impressive.

5 stars for value. 4 stars for overall, minus 1 for the unmentionable control device. Too generous, I know, but afterall, I'm just a softie :)
