I don't know the model year of this unit. I bought it at a Salvation Army thrift store so I can have music in my shop. I first hooked it up to some McDaniel's HiFi speakers I bought in 1971 and it didn't sound all that great. Then I remembered some KLH Model 4s which I bought new in the 1960s. It sounds better with those. I have an older Sony CD player and a turntable I put away in 1996 and those are the sound sources. I don't have any TV in my shop so can't comment on that. For the price $30; I can't complain.
I don't have a remote for it and am disappointed that some functions don't seem to be available without the remote. However, for garage use it is fine, with my KLH 4s.

Strength:

Many connectors at the back - quite flexible to do whatever.

Weakness:

Dubious surround quality. Not many Digital options at all (1 optical & 1 cable). Tricky ambidextrous remote. Internal Power supply issues?

I bought this as my budget entry-level 5.1 system after test-driving a friend's model for a full month. During this time I had ample time to get to know the variety of inputs/outputs and general flexibility of the system (all the time concerned with sound quality, thanks to 'What Fi-Fi' magazine). I would recommend this as a cheap 5.1 system to anyone looking for a quality receiver for next-to-no money. But in reality it would save you in the long run if you dug deeper and went for a more xpensive option if you are in a settled environment for a long-haul. Get a LONG full warranty! I didn't, and now 3 years later the power-supply or something internal is trashed, and I'm looking for another Receiver (+long Warranty)!! ;b

Strength:

Great Power Great Features Good Pricing

Weakness:

None so far

I have had absolutely no problems with this receiver. It puts out a perfect amount of power to whichever speakers I connect to it. The DSP feature works fantastically. Don't hold back on purchase.

Strength:

For its price range has many and convenient features .

Weakness:

Not enough powerfull for demanding speakers and hence may be overdriven and be the cause of distortion at high listening levels (with all the bad consequences that follow from that) .

This receiver sounds pretty good when it is connected to sensitive speakers , otherwise it lacks the damping factor which is nececessary for driving speakers with a high impedance . The sound is OK for its price level with a bit emphasis on the high frequency (treble) . I have to use an external equalizer (I have an excellent Denon EQ)in order to compensate for the medium frequencies)which are somehow missing . Othewise the sound is transparent with enough details from music or video stuff , and the sounfield is adequate for a small or even an average room .

Strength:

Good range of sound. Pretty straight foward to control once it is adjusted properly.

Weakness:

Remote is confusing. Took a while to get everything adjusted properly for adequate sound.

I picked up this receiver about 6 months ago and have been very pleased with its performance. The room it is in is much longer than it is wide, and this receiver really filled the room after a little adjusting (I have two 10 year old 75 watt Cerwin Vega bookshelf speakers hooked up to this and they tend to overpower the center and satellites). As for the hiss at higher volume levels, I haven't had to go high on the volume meter since I adjusted the decibel output to the center and satellites, so I haven't had this problem. Over all, this receiver makes the china cabinet shake and really brings out some decent depth of sound. The remote is a bit annoying, but you can do pretty much everything from it, so that does help. Not necessarily for the audiophile or home theater guru, but great for a first time, low end user such as myself.

Strength:

Powerful enough to hear my Yamaha NS-A200XT's running off it from down the street.

Weakness:

Not powerful enough to blow out windows.

This is probably one of the best receivers for the price. It has many features and has good sound quality.

Strength:

Economical - lots of features for the price.

Weakness:

VERY distinctive hiss at high power.

This is a great low end 5.1 and DTS receiver. I was suprised at first with how good it sounded for its price. However, once you turn the volume up above 35 (it goes to 50), you start to hear a distinctive hiss in your speakers. I'm assuming this is the receiver going into high power mode - in the specifications in the manual it says THD goes up to 10% over 80 watts. That's no good. That aside, if you want an excellent, non-ground shaking, entry-level reciever, you've got it with this little Aiwa. It plays DVDs and my XBox games in sweet 5.1 surround sound. Quite a bang for the buck!

Strength:

Beautiful sonic clarity at low to medium volumes, much better than the technical specs imply.

Weakness:

Craptastical remote, unusual control layout, not powerful enough to host a rock concert.

I bought this unit "open box" - which is why the price is unusually low. Like everyone''s said, the remote is annoying for doing fancy operations. I mostly use the remote for volume, source, and power - it''s OK for that. Price aside, this receiver''s true strength is that it just plain sounds good at low to moderate volumes. There is a lot of warmth and clarity to its sound. I replaced a 4 year old Pioneer high-end receiver with this one, and over the same speakers (quality Yamaha large floor standing ones), the Aiwa sounds more pleasant at low to medium volumes. Not that the pioneer sounded bad - it is also a quality unit, just that the Aiwa sounds very, very good. At very high volumes, there is no comparison - the Pioneer model I had sounded phenomenal at very high volumes and the Aiwa becomes a bit empty, "tinny" at very high levels. Since I live in an apartment, I greatly appreciate the great performance at low volume of this Aiwa!! Other than that, it''s a functional unit with enough features. I''d like to see another optical input or two, (it only has one) and perhaps better control layout - but I feel very happy with the unit considering it was under $200 .
