I had a real good bargain for aprox 300 $ .
I bought the avr-1400 complete with drs-810 dcm-260 and two Denon speakers!!!!!
With those Denon 2-way bass reflex bookshelf speakers I'm satisfied and I hardly listen in suround mode with sub.
Except films or Tiesto /.Armin van Buren. It sounds clear even records though less loudness.
This model is 15 years ,but not obcelete, however no optical in.an other downside is that my multiremote not enable the cdm-260 and drs-810 because the powertoggle has the same code.
In Mono mode you have perfect sound for old records in mono!
For an audio enthusiast this is the outmost set....On the scale of 10....9+

The best of the best! Denon has never disappointed me! The receiver is great! A lot of power and clear sound. No flaws!

I have owned this Denon receiver for four years and it still rocks. I ahve used it to power tow sets of Paradigm speakers, namely the goliath power 90P's. These floor standing speakers have dual built in powered subs so I only use the denon pre-out which does an outstanding job of providing earth shattering base on the paradigm's. The under-rated 55watts per channel put sony and pioneer (have never touched either) to shame who list receivers with 150watts of power which couldnt eeven jog in the same race as the denon. I have turned this thing up so loud that my neighbors down the block can hear it. 55watts? Denon is pretty sweet, I would highyl recommend it to anyone looking for an inexpensive high-end receiver with good features. I have only used it in 2 channel so I cannot say anyhting about the surround capabilities, but I am sure they are fgood as well. I am now a Denon fan and contemaplting newer, better recivers to power my syste. HAve also used with Paradigm mini monitor 3's and they sounds geeat also. Highs, mids and lows are all represented equally. Could use some more bass thumping there, but I may jsut be used to the dual powered subs. a GOOD BUY.

This Reciever by denon is an upscale model. The reason for this is the 6channel in. I dont personal use this but it's nice to know its there. It has lots of digital soundfields and has Dolby Pro Logic Decoding

Plays bad in hifi, the discant is horrible.

I like the look and feel of this amp. The only, and big
problem, is that it plays hifi real bad. I sold it, and buyed
a nad t750, and I can't tell you how great it was.

the nad amp. I tried the avr-1400 many speakers, like
B&W, Bose, Liner phase, PSB, but the discant ripped my
ears appart. For surround they sounded ok.

I picked this receiver up for $243 (three year warranty included) at the The Wiz on a clearance sale. When I saw the price I couldn't pass it up. I had been using an Onkyo TX-SV343 Pro Logic receiver. I was happy with the Onkyo, however, it acted up one too many occassions and successfully blew my sub. It also didn't provide a 6 channel input which the AVR-1400 does (a big plus in my book, since I have been sitting on the AVD-2000 for a year without being able to use it). I am using Wharfedale Modus-8 speakers which again I am happy with, but they do seriously lack in mid range. The Onkyo did not do anything to help this (crystal clear highs and tight bass, but no mid range) leaving my listening experience sorely lacking in the mid range. So, I hooked up the Denon, and Wow, I am a changed man. My brother has been swaring by Denon for years, and I never payed attention to him. Well, he was right, the Denon has provided my system with an all new level of clarity and, damnit, mid range! So far, the best receiver I have ever owned (but if you look above you will see my others were all pretty much clunkers). When I make my first million, I will move into the wonderful world of audiophile, but for now I am very happy with this receiver. It has provided my ears with an all new listening experience both musically and theatrically. I have to give it a five for value since I paid so little for it, and I hate to give it a five overall, since I believe it is missing a few features and 5 is supposed to be perfection. I feel it is better than a four, though (how about a 4.5), so I will give the five.

A week bass if you don´t have a powered sub, like I do!

This amp really rocks!! I have builded a small homecinema with dvd. I have plugged the internal dekoder from the dvd into the 6.ext on the receiver, and I must say I´am impressed. The sound is very clear and quite powerfull. I have also plugged my sony playstation into it, and now it´s totally cool to play Gran Turismo 2. So i you have this amp. and a playstation, then connect those things together, and chose the 5 channel stereo on the amp.
Anyway the DDSC-A on this baby gives the sound a more clear mid tone especially i DOLBY PRO LOGIC!!
I can only recommend one thing. Don´t buy sony, yamaha, onkyo. Buy denon!!

I had it when it was first introduced 2 years ago and put top $ for it. There wasn't really any other choices at the time, only maybe a Yamaha RX-V 59x, or Onkyo similar, but the Denon attracted me for its Lexus quality and high end Japanese electronics (Narkarmichi, sorry for the spelling, is just too rare). It dilevers high frequency clearity, a bit week on the bass. The unit is felt heavy, to perhaps ensure heavy metal for high current heat sink, but it is extremely quiet for DPL receivers.

My dislike about the unit is its week centre channel, no matter whether setting for larger centre speaker or small speaker. The dialogue out of the centre speaker is too week, unless A) crank up the volume B) dial up centre speaker level. I must put centre speaker level to about 5-8dB in order to hear conversation well, when I have volume set about -12dB. I tried with centre speaker set at 3dB, but I still have to have volume set at -10dB. If I had centre speaker set at 0, same as all other 4 speakers, then I must crank up the master volume to -6dB to just capture dialogue on the screen. Any suggest how that can be fixed?
My speakers of B&W DM602 front, CC6, and DM601 rear have been balanced by a Radio Shack sound pressure metre, and speaker level setting on the Denon are 0 for all 5 channel, in order to balance the mono test tone.

I bought Denon's AVR-1400 four months ago. I have it hooked up to Mirage 490i (front) and Mirage 90i (surround). My VCR is the SONY SLV-776 and I thoroughly enjoy watching Dolby Surround movies on this system. On the music side, I have tried the Denon 360, and the Yamaha CDC-765 with it. The Yamaha bombed, in my opinion--bass frequencies produced a booming effect and an almost painful quality to the sound. The Denon 360 was bright and matched well with this receiver.
I would recommend this unit to people with a budget of under $1500 for a home theater. I enjoy it very much!

Does anyone know if you can hook up a DTS decoder to this unit? Does having a 6-ch. input mean that you can hook up a decoder, or is there more to it than that?
