I have used this receiver for a little over a month now and am very pleased. This reciever replaced my H/K AVR25 MKII which I loved, but I couldn't resist jumping on the Dolby Digital bandwagon. Because this is my first Dolby Digital receiver, I have nothing to compare it against. When used in conjunction with my Pioneer DV525 DVD player, I am blown away by the performance. For music listening purposes, I'm not covinced that I like this receiver better than the old H/K. The bass response for home theatre is fantastic even though I do not use a subwoofer for the LFE channel. However, when listening to CDs at low volume the bass response doesn't compare to the great sound my H/K put out. Overall, this quality receiver has been an excellent choice, especially for the price ($325 brand new).

Strength:

Almost everything. Fantasitc sound and value for the money.

Weakness:

Bizzare remote and almost uselss manual

This reviever is a fantastic value for the money (about $300, new on ubid). The Separation on the 5.1 digital sound is amazing. It is a surprising large upgrade on the Surround Sound on my old Denon.

Strength:

looks, power,AC-3, 5 channel stereo, build quality

Weakness:

remote, owners manual, smallish display

I've had it for about a week now and so far so good. Power is about comparable to my old H/K avr70(same rated power, but Denon has 70 watts x 5) Dolby digital is a huge step up from pro-logic. Another great feature this receiver has is 5 channel stereo, its way better than music in pro logic, it really fills the room with music. The remote is kinda worthless for anything but the receiver itself. Its a learning remote but the manual is so poorly written that I cant figure out how to program it! My biggest complaint is the owners manual, why cant these manufactures write a manual that describes how their product works. The harman kardon owners manual is just as bad. I would give it 5 stars for sound quality and value but the sucky owners manual drops it down a star.

Strength:

great smooth sound

Weakness:

digital stage not working

i recently bought a denon avr 1700 dolby digital reciever from sound city.com open box display model. i got it home and hooked it up. all the stages work fine except the digital. i don't have an optical cable so it is in pro logic right now. when i turn it too the digital stage it is fine for about 30 sec. and then the volume dramatically decreases. if i turn it up it shuts off or sound stops coming out. it also sounds all out of phase. i checked all settings on my dvd player and all my wires to make sure nothing was touching. everything should be fine. the last thing i can do before giving up and returning it ( which i don't want to do because it is supposed to be a good reciever and it is a pain in the butt) is try another dvd player. if that isn't the problem i guess i have to return it. has anyone heard or experienced any similar problems with this model reciever. especially in the digital stage. e mail me please. adamup@midcoast.com
