I was originally looking for an entry level receiver as my Marantz was dying. The Marantz sounded great with my BIC Venturi speakers, so I wanted something that sounded just as good, but also was looking for a home theater set up. I originally purchased the Technics 940 which is an entry level home theater receiver, but when I got it home and hooked it up I immediately became aware that this entry level crap wasn't going to be good enough so I took back the Technics and started shopping again. I visited by local Best Buy, Good Guys, Circuit City and spend several hours going over the reviews here at audioreview.com. After a few days I was finally able to narrow my search down to the Onkyo 575x and the Denon 1801. I had reviewed some of the grounding problems with the Onkyo so decided to go with the Denon. When I went to Good Guys to purchase this receiver I got it for $440 so man was I happy...It was better priced than the Onkyo.

Well, I have only had this for about one week now but boy am I happy with this baby. I know I'm going to enjoy it for years to come. I originally had it hooked up to my BIC Venturi speakers on the front, but they were just too much base so I hooked it up to my Jensen towers and it sounded pretty darn good. I thought I would wait and puchase some new front speakers at a later date, but then I happened to be in my local Sears store and saw the Accoustic Research 381's on clearance for $85/each. I came home, read some of the reviews on these speaks and ran my butt back to Sears and purchased these things today. I hooked them up a few hours ago and have had a huge smile on my face ever since. Boy does my system sound great. I'll get the rear, center and sub later. This is a great receiver and I would and have recommended it to everyone. If you're thinking about buying it, don't...just do it.. You will be very happy!

Strength:

Very Bery nice Sound, amps, power-supplie, sight and yes 5CH Stereo

Weakness:

Remote dosn't glow in the dark, not a "learning remote" like the AVR-1700, lack of some basic features.

Ok, I got this AVR1800 for $350 (at cost) so I can't complain much. What made me decide to purches a Denon was the fact that no other AVRS offers 5CH Stereo, is 5CH important?
Well If you love music like me it would be because it powers all the speakers you have (I own a pair of Infinity RS 2001 in front, pair of Boston Acustics CR6s for surround, Phase Tech Power 10 sub, no center speaker). Its MUCH better then listening to ProLogic (L,R,SW)or the crapy fake 5CH sound which is featured in other manufacters "higher end" models for stereo radio, TV and CD that dosnt have DTS yet.
Also the 1800 has better amp/power than Sonys, Yamaha around the same price range. Sure those other name brands I named has more features like, "sleep", neat remotes(sony 2 way) that 90% of owners are not smart enough for, more DSP sounds, "looks cool", but are you going to listen to music or look at the AVR? Ok i sound like a salesmen sorry.
anyways I cant believe Denon did not put a sleep timer on the darn 1800 (what are those guys smoking?) and i thought the LED display pannel could be bigger and more colorful.
those are the reasons why I did not give this product 10 stars.
Even If I got this AVR for retail I would still be HAPPY.

Strength:

Plenty of juice for the speakers. Love the look. Clear sound and power.

Weakness:

Manual was a bit rough. Can't adjust the bass and treble tone control from the remote. (unless i just haven't been able to figure it out yet)

I previously had a Technics SA-AX730 and was only considering getting a DVD player with a built in decoder, but I got a little bug in my ear that made me consider a new receiver with Dolby Digital and DTS built in. I had reservations about only getting 75 watts per channel, but wow. I am nothing short than amazed with the sound that comes out of this thing. It was a close call between the Denon and the Onkyo, but for the extra $20 (I paid $499), I figured that I would not only get an extra 25 watts, but much better product all in all. I was right. I wish you could alter the bass and treble from the remote, but I haven't figured out how to. If anyone reads this and wants to clue me in, e-mail me at VJETTA20@hotmail.com
You definitely get your money's worth on this deal. If you are considering a new receiver, do yourself a favor and try this one out. I also have to say that all of the reviews here really helped to sway me towards the Denon over the Onkyo. You can read all the specs in the world, and you can read the "experts" reviews, but nothing compares to the reviews of the fellow home listener who spends money to listen to great music opposed to people who get paid to write about a new product. I tend to weigh this stuff more than the experts' reports. By the way, you don't need to have a huge setup to appreciate this receiver. I am running:

Fronts: Paradigm Titans (6.5" woofer)
Surrounds: Titans again
Center: Just a speaker I pulled off my older Fisher portable. (super tweeter, tweeter, 5.25" midrange/woofer)...I never knew it could handle the power I push though it.
Subwoofer: If I had one, I wouldn't have my apartment any more. I get plenty out of the Titans(impressive speakers)

Thanks for the help to all that have already posted, and I hope that I could provide the same service.

The Remote and the manual. (Some complians that it is bad in english. It isn't better in swedish, and one part is in spanish.)

I've had this beauty since December 1999 and I was really impressed with it the first time I hooked it up. It got things out of my old speakers (a pair of cheap Pioneers) that had never been there before. My old CD changer (Philips) also got a boost from using the Denon DAC.
I already had a pair of surround speakers, but I decided I wanted a center quickly, and decided on the Dali SC-7. I was really surprised how that changed the sound. It sounded much better, and the pro-logic became much more accentuated. Next boost to this system came last November when I upgraded the main speakers to a pair of JPW ML910. These babies gave a new outlook on the bass. I realised when I got them that I had never had any bass really, only somthing that reminded me of bass. Unfortunately I live in an apartment, so I don't want to get a much needed subwoofer, as I don't want to disturb the neighbours. The last step in making thing perfect was getting a new computer, with DVD and Dolby Digital (digital S/P-DIF out.) For the first time I have been able to listen to genuine Dolby Digital, and I can just say: It ROCKS. 'The Blues Brothers' became a whole new experience watching it on DVD with Dolby Digital sound. (And I've seen that movie more than 10 times, most of them at a film festival)

THE DAMN INSTRUCTIONS

Just purchased this model and I really want to write a full review, but that will have to wait a couple weeks. Right now, I just wanted to state that the instructions on this thing are awful! I agree with whoever said they needed someone who can speak English better. Perhaps if they'd put forth just a bit more effort into it, the manuel could be as wonderful as the rest of the receiver!

I love this receiver! I've had it for a month and haven't found one thing I don't like about it. Ended up paying $549 at a local AV store (talked them down from $599). I've heard sounds I never heard before from my speakers. Very clean, clear sound at all volume levels. Has plenty of power for my needs. I like the remote. I found it to be intuitive and it handles the basic functions of my other remotes (TV, DVD, VCR)with no problem. Haven't each touched the front panel controls (except maybe the volume). The manual could use a little work, as others have noted. But apparently it provides just enough info, as my setup went very smooth. This unit will be with me for a long time.

Strength:

DTS and Dolby Digital Playback, Clean Powerful Sound, makes even a crappy center channel sound decent during home theatre listening.

Weakness:

Music does not seem to be as "natural" as my 6 year old Yamaha Receiver, but it isn't broken in yet.

Receiver is great. Love the DTS and Dobly Digital Home Theatre playback, my first experience with both.

Music is loud and clean sounding, I love the Matrix mode and 5 channel Stereo for music listening.

Overall I am very pleased. My surrounds, and center channel are pretty lousy, but this great reciever makes them sound pretty darn good during home theatre use.

As mentioned earlier though I like to listen to music in the Matrix and 5 channel stereo modes so I look forward to upgrading to a matched speaker system.

Strength:

Overall sound quality for the price and the uncluttered design.

Weakness:

Instruction manual is not quite as clear as other models and I'm having trouble getting the remote to "learn" my Sony TV and CD player.

After looking for a new home theater receiver for about a month I finally decided on the Denon. I was looking at similiar products from Onkyo, Yamaha, Sony etc. but none could quite match the performance for the dollar of this unit. Not to mention the clean sound available at all but the most piercing listening levels. The uncluttered face is really a blessing and adds a touch of class where the other brands looked more like a video arcade game in some modes. (Come on do we really need 15 soundfields?) I do believe the manual could use more work as others have mentioned but after a few hours and some tweaking you will definitely get comfortable with it and will have a smile from ear to ear. The only other gripe I have is that the remote does not seem to want to work with my 32" Sony TV and my Sony 5 disc changer. Any suggestions out there?

Boy was I suprised.
Was used to prologic with the Kenwood. AC-3 via my PC Digital out rulez major. I thought my Kenwood deserved better speakers, but it turned out that my speakers deserved a better receiver. Bought the 755AR Denon cd-player also with alpha processing. I have heard sounds out of my speakers, I never heard before. The sound is crystal clear. I love the adjustability of all speaker modes. For my small bedroom it rocks.
I have a pair of B&O S60 of apprx. 7 years old and a fairly new JBL surround set of speakers.
A little example: Armageddon Intro, the sailing ship part. It now feels like i am on that ship!!!!! (sail makes a crisping sound!!!)
