remote does control DVD well (pioneer) does not cotrol cable box

I really love this receiver!! It has greate stereo and 5channel steroe modes. THe DOlby Pr Logic 2 channel sound is bland though, so I almost always use 5 channel stereo instead. Remote sucks, but it is a great sounding receiver.

This reciever is great!! For the $529 price tag at Bid.com, this peice is a steal!! I personally like the remote, as it learned all my other remotes beautifully. The sound is CRYSTAL clear, the DSP modes are a tad lame, but pure stereo is simply great!

Strength:

Clean power, nice universal remote, great 5.1/dts sound

Weakness:

music sound a little less than expected so far

I have had the avr2800 for a couple weeks and have so far
been very pleased. After tweaking my subwoofer and
settings on the unit, the surround capabilites of the
2800 are excellent. The 85 watts per channel across all
channels really packs a punch. I have a pretty small
room for a surround setup, but I cant wait to get it into
a nice big room to really see what it can do.

The dolby digital and DTS on this unit is pretty incredible.
Again, I dont have much to compare it to, but I cant see
needing to replace this unit anytime soon. Plenty of power
and great sound.

I really like the remote and its learning capabilites. If I
really wanted, I could ditch all other remotes. This one
handles it all. The setup on it is a little different, but
it just takes some getting used to.

All in all, a great receiver. I got mine from Eric at
sounddistributors.com and got it for a very good price
with shipping included (just do your homework and you can
get a good deal)

Strength:

Absolutely awesome receiver for the price.

Weakness:

The remote.

The best product out for the price bar none.
I listened to comparable models from Yamaha,
Sony and this better by a wide margin.
Great for music and movies and by the way
I don't hear any hiss.

Strength:

Good build, Clean delivery. Also like the OSD feature.

Weakness:

Bass & Treble Control

I believe this is a very quality piece of equipment. The sound is very clean & I've never heard any hiss. The remote is a bit bulky (must be made for large hands), but not a problem. HT is so enjoyable with this Denon.

Strength:

Clear sound, no hiss/hum

Weakness:

Remote is not very user-friendly good.

Got this receiver for $550 shipped (although I had to wait for about 3 weeks because it was out of stock, but for the price, I can't really complain). After I got it setup correctly, this receiver puts out one of the clearest sound I ever heard. Better than the Onkyo 575 (although I did hear the hiss/hum at high level, I don't put it loud enough to bother me) and the Yamaha 795a that I've heard at Myer-Emco.

The remote control takes time to get used to, although it does look like something out of the 60's (if they make remote control from that time era :-)).

Strength:

build quality. sound quality. 5 channel stereo. cinema eq. simple to use. not full of toys you never use like the yamaha and sony.

Weakness:

volume display very small.

I tried them all. In the end it came down to the Onkyo and Denon just because of the 5 channel stereo. I choose the Denon because of superior DD-DTS sound quality and Onkyo's lately are losing ground in build quality and are becoming to cheap on some things. For example no gold plated jacks on all Onkyo models. Now to me that is very bogus. Onkyo is also staring to cut corners with no banana plugs on the 575 and lower. Come on Onkyo if I wanted no banana plugs I would buy a regular line Sony or Pioneer. Once I listened to 5 channel stereo I will never go back to listening to cd's in 2 channel. I cant wait for dvd audio to come. I have dipoles in the rears and the 5 channel stereo still works great. I think the remote is great. For me the remote does everything I need to do. Look at the Yamaha 995 and Sony 555 remote and you will see crap remotes. I also think the manual is very good. With the on screen display anyone should be able to setup and use this reciever. Cinema EQ is also a must. So dont even consider another receiver without it. Onkyo and Denon both have it. The detection of the digital signal is superior to so many others. The Sony receivers you put in the Eagles dvd and you miss the first 2 seconds of the song or the beginning interview as the Sony detects what signal it is. With the Denon their is no delay. In my opinion the other contenders from Yamaha, Marantz, Nakamichi, Rotel etc are all good receivers but will need to offer 5 channel stereo to keep up with Denon. Denon started it's great products with the famous Stereophile rated AVR 2500 and continue their legacy with the Denon 2800.

Strength:

Good sound quality, lots of connections, Configurable DSP mode

Weakness:

Poor Manual, Control panel

My main concern is buying a receiver is the sound quality when playing music. The comparison with 1800 in this aspect is very significant. The voice is a lot brighter, the bass is more precise and in depth. Even for their price difference, I don't need a second thought and I have no regret at all for my decision.

If money is a big concern, then Nakamichi will be a good competitor with AVR-1800. I forgot the model number, but their price are very close. There is a huge difference when listening to music, but I just don't like the look of the Nakamichi one, otherwise, it's worth to take a look at.

For my 2800, not only that the manual is user unfriedly, the control panel is also of the same class. Even though there are only a few DSP mode, I think that's all I need. I like the Jazz club, it expands the room a little but still confined in an area. Personally, I think Arena doesn't work so well. When I use optical in for CD, the decoding by the receiver is too rigid, so called electrical sound. So I better leave this job to my Denon 2500 DVD and use a pair of mid price cable for connection. As I heard, coaxial digital cables gives a warmer sound, but no chance to try it out yet.

Strength:

Clear Sound, simplicity, 5-ch stereo

Weakness:

Display hard to read at times

I picked this receiver up after beginning to think that my Sony was a little bright sounding...I am completely satisfied with my decision to go with the Denon. The thirty minutes that I spent setting up the Denon gave better results than the hours I had tweaked the Sony...

The Denon doesn't have as many useless toys as the Sony (DSP's, displays, etc), but they were never used and quickly forgotten..anyways, the Denon has On Screen Display.

I give this one all 5's...

Clear, Clear, Clear. Enough power to drive neighbors nuts. 5 channel stereo!!!! S video switching.

Weakness:

remote a little bulky, but nice. Manual sucks

No need to go on an on about every detail of this reciever. Just buy it. If you're looking for a reciever below 900 bucks then don't go anywhere else, especialy sony. This is my first Denon product and I am so impressed. I've heard DVD's i've owned for a year now that sound like it is the first time i've heard them. Just buy it.
