Strength:

wonderful on DTS/DD

Weakness:

Hissing noise on analog

I've got the same problem as many people. Hissing noise on the analog mode.

I bought it at Good Guys, got problem on the first on right front speaker, so I exchaged for the new one.
The second one even worst, in prologic mode the surround sound came out in the front, and left side is louder than the right side.

I really love Denon receiver, but I have to give up on this one.

Strength:

Clarity, Digital decoders, build, price

Weakness:

None. See below.

I purchased the AVR2800 as a replacement
for my Yamaha RV-X795a in hope of achieving
a better receiver/speaker matchup,
Yamaha/Klipsch.The AVR2800 did help
reduce the excessive brightness I had
experienced and achieve the
Musical match I was looking for. Additionally while one would expect a
receiver such as this to provide good
digital decoders I was really surprised
to find just how good the DPL decoder was.
On a down side - I have not graded
this review on that - the first AVR2800
ran hot enough to be dangerous to small
children and was replaced by a second which
has performed flawlessly. Five stars plus
however I would recommend purchase from a
local dealer rather than on-line should a
return be necessary.

Crisp, clear sound....

Due to the dissastisfaction with the service of Yamaha here in the Philippines, I decided to purchase a new receiver. I promised myself not to look at another Yamaha, therefore my choices were limited to the Denon AVR-2800 and the Onkyo TXDS676. I listened to the onkyo but was not quite convinced. I then proceeded to try out the Denon AVR 2800 and then got swept off my feet.

Once I hooked it up to my Atlantic Tech System 220, wow! I never heard such detail and clarity. I can now hear all the small details in the DVD's I used to audition it. Looks like I will go through my entire DVD collection again. Its much better than the Yamaha. 5Ch stereo is also awesome.

TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES

PRETTY MUCH FEEL RIPPED OFF. FIRST ONE HAD ALL KINDS OF TERRIBLE STATIC ON ANALOG CHANNLES TO REAR SPEAKERS. HAD DEALER BRING OUT REPLACEMENT. SECOND ONE HAD THE SAME THING, BUT ONLY IN THE LEFT REAR SPEAKER IN THE 5-CHANNEL STEREO MODE. PAIN IN THE REAR TO HAVE ANOTHER BROUGHT OUT SO I DONT USE THE 5-CHANNEL MODE WHEN WATCHING TV AND USING VCR. USE DOLBY PRO LOGIC MODE WHEN WATCHING THESE. DIGITAL CHANNELS IS PRETTY GOOD THOUGH, ESPECIALLY WHEN USING DVD PLAYER. FOR THE PRICE I PAID THOUGH AND ALL OF THE GREAT REVIEWS HERE ON THIS MODEL, I AM EITHER JINXED OR DENON IS NOT AS GOOD AS ADVERTISED. OVERALL, DISAPPOINTED IN THIS RECEIVER.

Strength:

Excellent DD and 5-Channel sound, solid build, excellent bass with subwoofer

Weakness:

Manual

Thanks to all reviewers here as my decision to buy the Denon AVR 2800 was based on the excellent reviews here. My initial choice was the HK AVR500 but after reading the relatively poor reviews (a lot of quality problems with the HK), I decided Denon was the better choice.

Overall, great for HT. TV with the 5-Channel stereo is excellent, especially when watching sporting events. DD is also excellent as is listening to music in either 5-Channel or 2-Channel stereo. Bass with my B&W1000 subwoofer is strong and clear. So strong in fact that I had to turn it to about 1/3 full volume in my 25"x11" room. The remote control is not as bad as everybody says. I've programmed it to run everything but the refrigerator. I can point this thing in any direction and it still works. The manual is not very clear and assumes that the reader is already knowledgeable. However if you read it a couple of times and with trial and error, you eventually get it.

Overall, I am satisfied with this purchase and would definitely recommend it.

Strength:

Great-sounding as a audio preamp, DD/DTS performance is awesome, easy setup, 5-channel stereo DSP setting

Weakness:

REMOTE is not that intuitive, only 3 pre-outs, might not be enough power for some (larger rooms)

For the money a great HT receiver, with Denon's usual outstanding audio fidelity. Connected the coax digi out of my DVD player; the unit's DAC's sound great, much more detail than my old CD player. DD/DTS soundtracks sound fantastic (when calibrated properly, of course). The '5-channel Stereo' is a treat, one of the only built-in DSP functions that I've heard on any receiver that is worth a damn. You have to twiddle with the balances to get it right, but once you do it's fantastic. I find myself listening to all stereo sources (regular CD's) through this setting. Makes me think 2-channel playback is a thing of the past. Hmmm...

Remote is not so great overall. You get used to it, and it's no reason to pass on this receiver, but it is what it is. If you want upgradeability to separates in the future, look at the AVR-3300 because this one only has 3 pre-outs. Also, has no component video switching, but that isn't a prob for me anyway. Also: power is slightly, but only slightly, limited at 85W/channel. I have to crank the sh*t out of movies to get HT performance to my taste, but at those levels it sounds great!

My system:
-Sony DVP-650D using S-video & digital audio outs
-Panasonic 27" Superflat Television
-Panasonic stereo VCR
-Denon AVR-2800 DD/DTS Receiver using preouts to a Hafler P3000 Power Amp (mains only)
-PSB Stratus Silver Mains
-PSB Stratus C5 Center
-PSB Century 500i Surrounds
-PSB Subsonic 3i Powered Sub
-Kimber 4PR Speaker Wire on L/C/R
-Hosa coaxial digital audio cable
-Homemade analog interconnects (Canare StarQuad wire w/Canare gold-plated connectors)

Strength:

Tons of functions. Clean power. Excellent 5.1 separation.

Weakness:

Could use a second coax connection. Slightly confusing remote and setup.

This receiver is definitely a bargain. I had searched for a while and considered a number of mid-range options. This receiver has all the options you could want for a low price range. It will blow away the Yamahas and Sony's in its price range. Don't buy the 2801, it is the same system only several hundred more. Save your money for speakers and buy this prior year receiver!!!
