After my review, I was surprised to get the number of e-mails asking not about the Denon AVR-2801 but about Crazy Eddies. So here is the information about them,

telephone (888) 645-1196
location Rahway, NJ
web site at www.crazyeddie.com

I paid $450 for the AVR-2801 and $44.91 in shipping and handling from NJ to CA.

The unit came double boxed. The original Denon box inside another box. The unit is new. There was a form
inside stating "Each product is fully guaranteed by the manufacturer. The complete warranty is included with the product..."(it was). It goes on to explain their seven day exchange and return policies.

Some people asked if I am concerned about the warranty. I have been buying audio and video equipment from manufacturers like Sony, Pioneer, Yamaha, and now Denon for about 21 years and have had only one repair ( on/off switch quit after 20 years)so I tend not to be too concerned.

I do not know if $450 is the current best price. I bought this unit from Crazy Eddie because a friend bought the same unit from them and seemed quite happy with it as am I.

EVERYTHING!

Weakness:

none, really (insert obligatory remote and manual complaints here)

After my ancient CD player finally died, I decided it was time to upgrade my system. After using this site and other sources for about 2 months (but never actually going to listen to anything, I should note), I chose the AVR-2801. I got it for $550 new from sounddistributors.com, and I couldn't be happier. I'm using a new Denon DVM-3700, a Paradigm CC-70 center channel, Paradigm Mini Monitors as the mains, and Boston Acoustics HD5s as the surrounds (no sub). The TV, soon to be upgraded, is an ancient 21" Panasonic. The whole combo is a little much for my relatively small apartment, but it sounds great now and will only sound better, I'm sure, once it's in a larger space.

My CD collection, which ranges all over the place - jazz, soft & hard rock, new age, classical, showtunes - has never sounded better. A really rich, full sound. I don't need all of the bells and whistles some of the other CD/DVD players seemed to offer - all you need for CDs is the 5-channel stereo option, which even my far-from-audio-enthusiast better half says is great. It meshes perfectly with my speakers and with the 3700.

As this is my first A/V receiver, and I don't have a high-quality TV, I don't really have much to compare it to, but thus far it's been excellent. I've played one or two average DVDs (Galaxy Quest, Cabaret), which looked and sounded fine, and then after reading comments in the Home Theater Forum on this site I checked out Saving Private Ryan and for the first time realized what Dolby Digital and DVD was all about. The aural effect, even without a sub, which I don't plan to get, is absolutely stunning.

As has been noted many times on this site, the manual, though fine, could be a little better, and the sliders on the remote certainly aren't the most user-friendly design, but you get used to them.

I would most highly recommend the AVR-2801 to anyone. It's an outstanding product. Much thanks to everyone on the site for the helpful reviews on various products.

FOR THIS PRICE, THIS MODEL SHOULD HAVE INCLUDED 6.1 INSTEAD OF 5.1

I WAS ONE OF THE GUYS THAT HAD HISSING SOUNDS WITH THE DENON AVR-2800. APPARENTLY, DENON PUT OUT A BAD BATCH OF 2800'S WITH DEFECTIVE ANALOG PROCESSORS. LISTEN UP REPLACED MY FIRST 2800 WITH ANOTHER 2800 THAT HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. AFTER BRINGING THIS TO THEIR ATTENTION, THEY AGREED TO REPLACE WITH A 2801. THE 2801 SO FAR HAS BEEN EVERYTHING AND MORE I EXPECTED WITH THE 2800 + 5 W MORE ON POWER. INCREDIBLE CLARITY, AWESOME DOLBY PROCESSING AND MORE POWER AT 90 W THAN THE 2800 WHICH IS 85 W PER CHANNEL WHICH EASLIY FEEDS ALL 5 B&W SPEAKERS + B&W SUBWOOFER. FROM MY RESEARCH, THIS LOOKS TO BE ONE OF THE BEST VALUES AVAILABLE FOR THE MSRP OF $699. IF YOU CAN GET IN CHEAPER, ITS A STEAL, BUT I AM GRATEFUL I BOUGHT FROM A REPUTABLE DEALER THAT PROVIDED GREAT SERVICE. DENON DOES NOT PROVIDE WARRANTY FOR INTERNTET SALES OR FROM NON-AUTHORIZED DEALERS.

I am building a home theater system and needed a receiver to replace my aging SX-780. Started with a the Sony STR-DE545 which seemed to have all the functions including s-video input/output to do the job. It produced a constant hiss level that was quite noticeable. It was returned for that reason.

Decided on the Denon because of the fine reviews on this site and the recommendation of a friend who bought one from Crazy Eddies a few months ago. It sounds smoother than my old Pioneer and is very pleasant to my non-audiophile ears. The remote is nice compared to the Sony since it can be programmed to turn on the whole or part of the system with the "call" button and number key. Am very pleased with the manufacturer and the supplier. Ordered on Nov.20 by phone and was delivered on the 30th by UPS.

Had a JVC 884 VBK. No comparison, the denon blows this amp out of the water. How is it that the JVC is rated at 5 x 100
but doesn't even have half the power that the denon has when rated at 90 x 5? HMMMMM mabey a little BS on JVC's part. The denon can actually power my speakers with accuracy
and precision. I missed effects in movies that I watched on the JVC that the denon brought to my attention. Good buy, well worth the cash. Thanks Denon.

P.S. I know why the power rating on the JVC is BS. I am an electronic tech. This is a good reason to check all specs on any electronic item to see power ratings and if they are true to the scale.

Strength:

Great upgrade from Denon Dolby Pro Logic Receiver

Weakness:

Remote (as most do) difficult to comprohend but imagine I'll EVENTUALLY understand it all

For X-Mas, I thought I'd upgrade my receiver to DD/DTS. Wasn't sure what significance there would be. HELLO! Big difference! And glad I made the decision!

The price listed above is WITH shipping/handling ($450.88 as of 12/8/00 without). The best deal I could find on the internet. Used liquidprice.com and the lowest bid I received from them was $485-$490. So I went with LetsGoDigital. I bought the receiver locally and when I get the receiver from LGD, I'll return the one from LGD to the local company. Therefore, I can't comment YET on the service/delivery of LGD. But the prices are great and they seem reputable (bizrate.com certified). Almost went with Crazy Eddies ($495 w/ s/h), but found LGD last second. Also, couldn't find anything about Crazy Eddies on bizrate.com, Gomez, etc.

I had problems hooking up initially. Dumb me didn't know that I had to use Coaxial or Optical to take advantage of the digital sound. Therefore, was scared when I initially tried to play a DTS DVD and got no sound! But read in discussion forum that I could simply use a yellow video cable running from my DVD to the Denon to satisfy the Coaxial connection. No need to pay $40 for a Optical cable. The old standard yellow cable sounds GREAT! I can't imagine Optical sounding any better! I also read in the forum where someone was actually able to use a wire hanger to satisfy the connection!

Anyway, VERY satisfied with the receiver sound so far. My rear speakers ACTUALLY have sound coming out of them now instead of muffled background noises! And my subwoofer sounds like a manly subwoofer!

As mentioned earlier, 5 minutes into Toy Story 2 after Woody and Bo Beep are fixing to kiss, you'll notice the surround sound effect from the rear with the animal sound effects.

Great price, great sound, great receiver...
