High Quality Build Awesome Power on all channels Excellent channel separation Tight bass Automatic AM/FM tuning Good looks
Weakness:
Remote control is pretty good, but you probably need two hands to use it, otherwise the unit was pretty much perfect. I was interested in purchasing an AV receiver for around 1500 - 2000. I didn't really know which brand was the best, I'd heard Marantz was the best you could get so I went into the store with the intention of purchasing the SR6300. I also thought about the DENON avr2802, but I just didn't assume that Denon was as good. At that time I had the Yamaha RXV-420. The a/v salesman was very helpful and supported the Denon which was at a cheaper price than the Marantz. Because I'm more of a movies person I demoed Any Given Sunday first and as soon as I heard the Denon I had basically made up my mind. The Marantz was very good but for my taste the Denon really stood out with movies. You seemed to have to turn the Marantz up to about -10 to really get some punch but then it would seem a bit too loud. But the Denon could sound as loud and better when its volume level was around -15 -> -20. IN terms of Movies the Denon sounded more powerful, gutsy and punchy with really nice bass even without a subwoofer. The Marantz was good, but for me because I prefer more punch and bass therefore the Denon was better for me. With Music it was a bit different. Because I listen to heavy kinds of music the Denon suited me much better because of its more dynamic sound and awesome bass and fidelity. But if you were a person who likes jazz or more mellow music then the Marantz might be for you. So if you love movies and metal music like tool or queens of the stone age then the Denon is definitely for you But you like movies and love mellow music like jazz, then you might go the Marantz. But all I know is I will never buy any other receiver product from any other manufacturer than DENON. Similar Products Used: Marantz SR-6300, Yamaha RXV-420, Onkyo Pioneer, Sony. |

Strength:
- incredible SOUND - 6 channel power - can play loud and long with no distortion - no problems so far after a year
Weakness:
1) Manual - the key is to hook up the on-screen display FIRST or else it will take you forever to set it up as it doesn't display on the receiver's dot matrix display like other recievers. 2) Setup / operation is not as intuitive as a Sony, butthen again it sounds 5X better, so worth it. 3) the remote is not nearly as nice as the Sony 945's, but it does operate all of my components OK OUTSTANDING receiver! I have had it for nearly a year now (bought in April 2002) and I am so happy I went with the 2802. Great sound, very smooth compared to the harsh sounding (by comparison) top-of-the line Sony STR-DE945 it replaced. The 6.1 is great, I bought the center rear surround and enjoy a fuller / more encompassing surround experience. Coupled with my Toshiba SD-4700 and Klipsch speakers, DVD-Audio discs are mind-boggling - incredible clarity and resolution, like the musicians are in the room with you. The sound is incredible for the money. The features are a plenty. Lots of hookups, and good looking.
Weakness:
If your upgrading from a 12 year old receiver hooking this up will be a pain in the brain. Do what I did, call Denon, they will give you all the answers. A great receiver. Solid sound, not to thick, not to thin, just right. Everything I play sounds good on this, even my old records. Hooking this baby up was a beeech, but after calling Denon a couple of times I got it all dialed in. I love this receiver. Highly recommended. Similar Products Used: None |

Clean power, DPL 2 easy set up.
Weakness:
Remote control. Solved this by buying a Rotel unversal remote. Works great. Love this unit. Upgraded from a Panasonic av receiver. Better performance and allows me to take advantage of large library of vhs tapes that can now be played in the DPL 2 mode. |

Strength:
Sturdily built -- man, this thing is heavy. Pretty easy to use and navigate. Good solid power.
Weakness:
The manual is awful, although I think the remote isn't as bad as people make it out to be. Unbelievable product for the price I paid. Bought brand new online at hypaudio.com -- it comes in the unsealed box but you won't get the Denon warranty if you buy it this way. So I paid a little extra for a private warranty and can sleep a bit better at night -- but Denon makes such great products that I doubt I'll ever need to worry about fixing this thing. I had a previous Denon receiver from the early 90s and never had a single issue with it. Not one. And that thing got kicked around big time. Similar Products Used: Using this with Paradigm Monitor 7 speakers, a Paradigm CC-370 center speaker ($890 for all three), and Boston Acoustics rear book shelf speakers ($150 for a small pair). Sweet sweet sound. |

All round value and performance Lots of features Great sound
Weakness:
Remote could be a bit better (Aus price listed above) What an Amp. What more can be said? Well lots really. Firstly it's a great solid build. It looks like it could take a lot of external punishment and still keep pumping (tho lets hope I wont need to test that). Secondly, I don't know if there's a different manual for Australia (I doubt it) but I had no problem with understanding it and setting it up. I'm by no means an expert with hi-fi stuff, but I had it up and running in full dts mode within about 45 minutes. Most importantly the sound is awesome. I tested a lot of amps before I bought this and none of them (to my ear) covered both music and movies so well. I don't like going to the movies now because I can hear how bad their system is. Some of the yamaha's were superior for DVD, but chuck a music CD and it just wasn't the same. Great all round performer. The remote is average. True the device selection could be better, but I can still find my way around it to control everything in a dark room. Its also very easy to program. For the price I couldn't find better. ------------- Denon 2802 B&W LCR 60 B&W 600 surrounds B&W 602 Mains B&W ASW 600 sub Sony 670D DVD Changer Similar Products Used: Nothing similar, just a bunch of old amps (sony, kenwood etc) without any of the features. |

Strength:
Great, clean power. Price Extra Features in it's price range. Good on screen display, controls. Flexiabilty of interconnects allows for long-term use and expansion. Extensive controls, and configurations Phono input (not all of them have it) 2nd room option Its a Denon
Weakness:
Difficult to set-up all the settings - especially for a novice who doesn't have knowledge of industry terminolgy. It's not recommended for someone who want's plug and play. This weakness is also its strength. It has tremendous controls, but can be overwhelming if you don't understand the details. The remote's downfall is its clumsy way of controlling other components in the system, You have to switch these two switches instead of pressing buttons to change the item you want to control. But I disagree that with others that you should invest in a learning remote. This remote allows for learning functions. The remote takes some getting used to, but its not a fatal flaw. I am very happy with this unit. I decided to get out of my entry-level high-end audio seperates and get into a Digital A/V receiver. I thought I would regret giving up my Adcom 545 amp, GTP-400 pre-amp, and Dolby processor GSA-700. But, it has proved to be a good decission. This unit has plenty of power and great flexibility. I would challenge anyone who believes that seperates are the way-to-go with surround sound. (I tend to agree for simple high-end music systems.) The money you save in interconnects, and the convenience of one unit far outweighs the minimal improvements of seperates. There are several ways you can get noise when routing all of those amps, and pre-amps. I bought this a close-out item. Similar Products Used: Adcom-GSA 700 |

Strength:
Smooth, clean sound. Beautiful looking. 6channel stereo, DTS-ES 6.1, DD 6.1 Matrixed and just oh-so-much-more!
Weakness:
The remote is terrible. Video select only on reciver and not on remote. Well I spent a boat load of time looking for a new receiver. Now mind you that I previously owned a Kenwood VR305 (DD and DTS 5.1 @ 100W X 5). I researched all of the most popular receivers on this website less than $800. It was a toss up from Denon, Yamaha and Onkyo. I read the reviews, went on a reccomendation and bought the Denon AVR2802. MAN, WHAT A RECEIVER! Everything that I need plus way more. I believe for the money I paid ($531) there is no other receiver that even comes close to the Denon. Believe me, if you are in doubts, don't worry this will satisfy. Two things I didn't like about the receiver are the remote and video monitoring while listening to other audio sources. The remote is stupid, just plain stupid. Terrible design, but I already have a Sony touchscreen Remote Commander so that didn't matter. But if a remote is important to you, be prepared to buy a new one. My second gripe is kind of a strange one. While playing video games, I cannot switch to listening to a CD through my CD player using my remote. There is a fairly easy way to do this with a button on the front of the receiver, but still kind of sucks. All in all, one bad a$$ package!!! Similar Products Used: Yamaha, Onkyo, Sony and Kenwood. |

Strength:
The Sound is awesome, especially DTS. Pearl Harbor and Panic Room were fabulous. Clarity is fantastic. Able to hear every bell and whistle. Stereo is very good too. For TV programs Dolby PLII is good. Learning remote is fairly good. 6.1 speaker setup is good. Ext Inputs for DVD audio is helpful if I buy a DVD audio player in the near future. Lot of extended functionality like remote receiver setup in another room, extra optical inputs/outputs. Great Bang for the Buck!
Weakness:
Designers of the Remote control unit bit more than they could chew...too bulky. Had to get used to operating the remote. On screen setup initially difficult and had to use S Video cable. The Manual is very difficult to understand and poorly written. Need to crank up the volume quite a bit to appreciate the sound. I got a deal, I think, with Goodguys. At that time the Denon AVR2802 was about $899. I was going to buy an AVR1802 and since that was not in stock, the Sales person gave me a 2802 for it's price. However, it was worth every penny I paid, especially the support I got from the Goodguys sales rep after I bought it was excellent. I was fairly savvy with Audio receivers but this was a little more complicated than I thought. I have Boston speakers (VR940), Center Speaker (VR910) and rear speakers (HD5) and JBL PB10 subwoofer. They rock my house. Similar Products Used: None. |
