After trying a Pioneer VSX-D608 and Onkyo TXDS656 I decided on this unit. However I wish I would have saved a little longer to buy the AVR-3600DTS.This receiver has an excellent clean sound but would be lost without a powered subwoofer. I just feel there should be a little more full range sound with a receiver of this caliber. Or maybe it is just my speakers? Cerwin Vega VS-120's
up front Cerwin Vega RE6C center,Cerwin Vega VS-80's as surround speakers and a Velodyne CT-120.

Any Comments as to how to make this system perform better would be appreciated.

Previously owned a Yamaha DPL, Denon is clean and crisp sounding with adequate bass. I removed the remote door and wrapped the remote unit in plastic for faster access and dust protection. Only complaint is the lack of rear preouts, sleep timer, balance control and bass extension button (Yamaha has all these). Still a great receiver and highly recommended

Well, I just finished hooking up the Denon AVR3200 with the rest of my components. I had upgraded from a Pioneer VSX-557. My components are:
Denon AVR3200
Sony DVP-S7000 DVD player
Sony CDP-C615 CD player
Sony SLV-675HF
Pioneer CLD-D390 Laserdisc player
A pair of old Pioneer speakers for the front
A pair of cheap Linear Dynamics speakers for the rear
Cheap Jensen center channel

I spent a couple of hours just trying to get all the components hooked up correctly (I also have a karaoke mixer). After all is said and done, I can say that this receiver kicks ass. I played Mimic on my DVD player (connected via digital coaxial input) and the sound was awesome! I loved the fact that you can adjust the output of each individual speaker since my speakers could not be evenly spaced. Listening to CD music through my CD player (connected via optical input) was also great. The 5-channel stereo is a feature that I think puts the Denon into a class of its own, even through my cheap speakers. The build quality on this receiver is superb: nice and heavy, with a clean, uncluttered look. Bass output could be better, but I'm planning to get a powered subwoofer so that shouldn't be a problem.

However, I do have some complaints:
1) The manual is lacking in terms of explaining what each feature does.
2) The remote can only take 26 codes. I would prefer to have a remote that can learn at least 100 codes so I can program all my other remotes into it.
3) I can't figure out how to get the AC3-RF input to work. I have my DVD player is connected via the digital coaxial input and my CD player via the optical input, but I can't get my AC3-equipped Pioneer LD player to work with the AC3-RF input on the Denon. Even when I change the DVD to the optical input, I still can't get the Pioneer LD to work on the AC3-RF input. Does anybody else have this problem?
4) The display on the Denon itself disappears after a few seconds so you're not really sure what mode you're in or how many db is the sound output until you hit the Panel button on the remote. Then the display goes away a few seconds after that.
5) Another problem related to the Pioneer LD player is that I cannot get the Denon to bring up the analog video portion of the LD when I switch the Denon to VCR2 (I had to connect the LD player to VCR2 using analog connections because the AC3 couldn't work on the Denon and DVD and VCR1 are already taken up by my other components). The only way I found around this was to output the analog video on my LD player directly to my TV.

Granted I'm not an expert audio guy or anything, but I am technical enough to know that there's something wrong here. Either I'm not connecting things right, or my Denon is defective.

Considering all these facts, I give the Denon 4 stars. Its sound quality is 5 stars, but the lack of a better manual and the troubles with the digital inputs has dropped its rating with me to 4 stars. Overall, if you don't care about the digital inputs, this receiver is one of the best in its class.

FYI:Denon just posted information on the upcoming AVR 3300. It looks like it is going to be targeted at the Yamaha RX-995. Althought, looking at the features, it may be priced a bit higher. A few improvements from the AVR 3200 are dual suround speaker switching for seperate movie and music speaker setups, 105 wpc, and 8 channel pre-amp out.

For more info: http://www.del.denon.com/catalog/products.asp?l=1&c=2

If you are still interested in the AVR3200 look for the closeout sales.

I have had this unit for approximately 8 months and really enjoyed every minute, but, I just got the itch to upgrade again. I really enjoyed this denon product and will continue to stay with denon (AVR5700).
If anyone is interested, I'm currently selling my unit for $500 and will pay for shipping. I have all the documentation as well as the original box and packaging material. Never had any problems with the unit....

The DENON AVR 3200 is a fantastic receiver. I have enjoyed it for about six months now. I have had no trouble with bass output, and it has a nice warm sound. I tried the YAMAHA RX-795 but I felt the sound was too bright. I prefer a warm full sound v.s. tight and bright. I also tried the DENON AVR-2700,but it didn't have enough balls,so I went with the 3200 and have been in home theater bliss ever since.Works great with KLIPSCH Synergy speakers, and the 5ch stereo mode is a great feature. Now I'm waiting for the DVD players to start being produced with built in DTS, so I can plug it into the 6ch. input. Hopefully that will happen on the next generation DVD players. Any ways I would recomend this receiver to everyone.

First, I'd like to thank the folks that host this page...thankyou thankyou thankyou
After spending way to much time reading, (mostly about stuff I couldn't afford) I happened into Good Guys (thanks to my girl friend) and there they are selling the AVR 3200 for 499+tax. I walk away with it with 5 yr warr. for 50 bucks, totaling around 585 dollars out the door.

At first I thought I'd keep it in the box until I got new speakers. I had a set of JBL m5's out and another in the box. (A Fry's 20 dollar thing.) But I didn't wait. I won't even mention what I'm using for a center speaker. But all I can say is I'm HAPPY!!

Now I'm not in a hurry to buy speakers, I'll do it as my budget permits, it just sounds too nice with what I have.

I have to give a five star, especailly for value,

I think Mr. Larry Goldstein (Oct. 30th 1997 review) nails it right on the head. Thanks Larry!
Myles

Strength:

Enough power, linear volume

Weakness:

Denon comes out with 3300 2 months after I get this, Remote needs more memory

This receiver is excellent. The set up is easy contrary to what some have said. The remote is very usuable but needs to allow more codes to be stored. Sound is very clean even at high volumes. I have not had any problems with a lack of bass, but have 150W powered mains. I love the way the volume is set up, it isn't like cheap stereos where about three quarters is already clipping. Dolby digital works great, I find myself getting upset at movie theaters because my sound at home rivals theirs.

Strength:

Digital in, Remote buttons glow in the dark, cute! 85W x 5. Quite heavy = better built amps.

Weakness:

Not sure. Remote is not attractive.
1 of the digital in is for RF AC-3 only.

Good. Nice sound, enough power for me. Fills the room and movies sound great. If you can get it the same price as me go for it.
