Strength:

Tough build

Weakness:

Lack AC-3 RF in, only one digital coax in

Denon sound smooth, solid at low end but probably too smooth for some people than Yamaha. Combine with a good speakers will result beautiful imaging.
I can hear what I didn't notice before with Yamaha.
Nice unit, worth to buy.

Strength:

warm sound, runs cool, good build, excellent HT

Weakness:

manual

Excellent unit. Brought home 2 diff sonys as well as the 787 before getting this unit. Word of wisdom, you can save a few hundred bucks buying online. Just make sure it is an authorized denon dealer you purchase from (for warranty reasons). My JBL studio series speakers sound awsome with this unit. HT is unparalleled when compared with sonys and the 787. You really can't beat the quality and features for any unit even close to this price range.

Strength:

solid build, surround modes, future proofing

Weakness:

backlight on remote has an annoying buzz

This is my first mid-fi a/v receiver and after much research, I am quite pleased I chose the Denon. Have to admit the manual was a little hard to decipher, but I didn't have too much trouble setting it up.
And now that it is up, I don't want to leave the house. Even through my old Infinity shelf speakers I can hear such a difference. More warmth! More detail! Time for new speakers!
I have only had the thing for a little under two weeks and haven't, as of yet, put it through all its paces, but so far the only complaint I have about the remote. When the backlight is on, there is this subtle staticy buzz, kind of like a fast clipping sound. It's a little thing, I know . . . but it bugs me.
Bought it from acoustic sound design and was VERY pleased with their speed and service.

Strength:

very powerful, excellent build quality, sounds great on all kinds of music. runs a lot cooler then my previous 3300. Huge power transformer!!!

Weakness:

in surround mode, my left surround speaker permitts a audible hiss that is much louder than the reast of my speakers. Only does it on the left surround...i'm exchanging it for a new one.

I love the denon recievers. I first had the 3300, but the overheating problem was a big issue so i got it fixed and sold it to get the 3801. I've had the 3801 for about 2 days now. Hook-up went well, and couldn't wait to power it up. Turned it on and let it warm up for about 20 while i set the controls up and stuff. After that i had the house shakin with all kinds of music....testing out my collection...mostly dmb, and rock. I love the 3801 because it's very powerful, lots of features, and i love the looks of it. I just don't know what the cause of the hiss in the left surround. I checked things over and over again. Is anyone ahving this problem? I switched from surround a to b but the problem was still there. I talked to my dealer and he said that it could be a processor problem. I can hear the hiss when the movie sceens are quite low. I usually have the volume at about -18 or-17 for movies. All the other speakers are silent EXPECT the left surround. It puts out a hissssss alot louder than the rest of the speakers. If anyone can help me or ahs this problem e-mail me @ diamondmike3383@hotmail.com

See Review Below

For "Ivan" from Sao Paolo. I appreciate your love for the Denon which explains the "5 Star" rating you gave but where in my review have I mentioned about "High Power is not better?"
I was simply questioning that the older Denon AVR 3300 with 5 channels @ 105/channel weighs the same as the newer Denon AVR-3801 with 7 * 105 Watts.
"If I wanted high power?" Dude, I still own the AVR 3000 and I do appreciate high power so please get your facts straight and make your review more objective like Chris' and many other reviewers below.

Strength:

sound

Weakness:

no dolby pro logic 2

I always like the latest and greatest features on a receiver, iguess thats why i got this one.The sound is great for movies but can be somewhat bright with music. This is true mostly when you listen to mp3 music when receiver is hooked up to computer.Stereo mode helps a lot but i find it to boomy but with 5 channel stereo mode it evens out the bass. The dts es feature is very good moving the sound around the room and the rear seperation is great.Gladiator is just amazing.Hopefully more movies will come to use this feature.Turning the back speaker on when movies are only 5.1 the receiver seems to lose power and clarity which probably shows that denon is lying about their power ratings or the extraction of left and right speaker sending the signal to the back speaker just muddies the effect.Regardless this receiver does movies very well and will make most people happy.features are great and music is tolerable for this price range.

Strength:

It is in many ways better than my prewious Sony TA-E7000ES!, 7 power amps, Sound quality, price, dts-es, phono stage and thet the products too compare it with costs twice as much.

Weakness:

Price in Norway, Dealer in Norway, Only one Coax digital input, Only one S-VHS monitor out and the remote.

This is just a great produkt at this price!
The capability of 5ch./7ch. stereo is wery good for music.
Now 7 ch. surround is awailable at a reasonable price.
The problem with the Norwegian dealer - HIFI klubben is that they only sell products they can have for them self.
(they are the only Denon Dealer in Norway).
So it's no price competition, I could save about 300$ in the USA!

My system:
Denon AVR-3801.
Toshiba SD-E500 DVD-A player.
7 Gallo micro speakers.
2 JPW SW250 subwoofers.

Similar Products Used:

Sony TA-E9000ES, Rotel and Pioneer.
