    Strength:

Looks good in cabinet, good dts, 5.1 decoding. Plenty of clean power for most people's HT setups. Awesome preamp cababilities helps someone that is a frequent upgrader.

    Weakness:

Can be tricky to configure at first. Not the best 2 channel reproduction. If no sound is coming out of speakers, hit auto. Denon should have fix this unit with a detachable power cord, for upgrading.

For the money, the Denon 3802 (3803) is an awesome value. If you have around a $1000 dollars and want to buy a good receiver, look no further. The Denon 3802 definitely has lots clean power and processing. What most impressed me about the Denon 3802 was its ability to act as a "good" preamp. For those of you think that the Denon 3802 sounds clean now, pair it with a good power amp and look out. But the final destination is separates, so I'm gonna buy a designated preamp shortly in the future.

    Strength:

-loads of power for those who love it clean and loud, -amazing for home theater or music -best under 2000.00 reciever period!

    Weakness:

-figuring out the fm/am on it with remote was odd?? But that's it!

I had been looking for a reciever for over a year and couldn't make up my mind on what to buy, everything I wanted was way out of my price range...But I finally caught a break...as the denon 3803 rolled out the price got nocked down on last years 3802( 2000.00 can down to 1300.00 ). This model has everything you could want in a top reciever. It has LOADS of power in home theater mode( with no distortion even at wake your neighbours levels..) and the 7 channel stereo will nock your socks off. This reciever litteraly has everything, I wouldn't know where to begin. I HIGHLY recommend this product, if you can get the 3803 cheap or can afford it go for it...but the best deal is in the 3802 as you only miss the up signal for component...! This is what separates a good home theater to Amazing! Can't say enought about it.

    Weakness:

    Is it raining outside?

I have owned this unit for coming up on a year now and I think it sounds better today then when I first bought it! I am taking full advantage of it's 7.1 capability and I just can't get over how great the surround sound experience is! It's better than any public theater I've ever been to! Ofcourse my room is considerably smaller than that of a full size stadium seating theater but, even so, the detailed sound quality comming from all around the listening area is unbeleivable! If it's raining on the movie Im watching, my wife will look out the window (honey, is it raining?). Truely lifelike sound simply played the way the director had it recorded. The 3802 has become a family member, and at some point in time it will become the little brother to the 5803 when it comes down in price a bit. Have fun and go buy one of these units! You wont regret it! It's like it stays new forever!

    Strength:

    Everything!

    Weakness:

Buy a Sony RM-2100 or Sony RM-3000 remote and it will make things much easier for all your HT equiptment.

I have owned the 3802 for 3 months now and feel that 3 months of aggressive use (daily)is an ample amount of time to post a fair review on this product. I use it for 70HT/30CD's. I am truely amazed at how Denon versus other comparable priced receivers provides such a wide spectrum of highs to very, very low sounds and very full in the middle. You often hear users refer to this as providing a warm sound.Very Direct but not piercing or offensive. In DD or DTS modes, especially in 6 or 7.1 (DTS-es or DD-ex) it's truely an incredible listening experience providing a 360 degree listening area. Matched up with nice speakers (dont use cheap speakers with this unit, as I beleive it's an insult) you've got a great system! If you've got the bucks and can afford the 5803 or Bob Carvers best, then go for it, but the 3802 especially at it's listed price is without question worth every penny and then some. Others have stated in their reviews that the 3802 runs quite warm through a couple of hours of use, but I find this to be false in my case. I put my hand over the top of the unit after watching a couple of very demanding movies and it was suprisingly quite cool. I expect many years out of this unit with Denon's reputation, as there is no compromise for quality parts in this 7.1 110 watts of true high current power, and powerful it is! Maybe one day I might step up and shell out the bucks for the 5803 or whatever Denon's top of the line is at that time. But for now,I am quite pleased! I could go on and on about the endless features but instead, I think I'll go watch a movie! Buy one! You will not be disapointed!

    Strength:

    Incredible sound, enough said

    Weakness:

Warranty issues, poor customer service, and the least useful, least user-friendly, and counter intuitive remote control ever engineered. I finally gave up on said remote and purchased a Sony universal remote- thank God!

Great product, Irritating manufacturer That said, let me mention the good qualities. This unit replaced my old Sony STR-DE675, and the difference was unbelievable. I cannot do justice to the improvements in clarity, detail, soundstage, and all other components that comprise a truly memorable audio experience. In a nutshell, I really feel like this unit brought my system to life. On the downside, I can't claim to embrace Denon's warrantee policy wherein any protections are voided should the unit be purchased from an unauthorized dealer. I found a great price and took my chances, but I have to admit that I am a bit nervous. I had one instance where the unit would not power up, but fortunately this was short lived. Still, I resent the company's policy as well as its indifferent customer service.

    Strength:

    Sound quality Power

    Weakness:

Manual Lack of some convenience features

Considered to buy 3803, but called up Tweeter to ask if they have last year models on sale. They did. In fact, it is called AVR1082 and marketed differently but it is the same thing. I only gave up upconversion to component video (which I do not have anyway) and less digital inputs (too bad, only one coaxial). So, I am using it less than a day, but sometimes the first impression is the right one. All in all a solid sound quality, a little brighter than my previous Denon stereo DRA-685. Setup was relatively easy, but at times I thought that the manual is written by an engineer, especially in the remote control section. For this money is a good jump into the home theater adventure. One important feature for me is missing, that is ability to play DIGITAL input in Zone2 (I could not believe that unless I found a small print note in the manual). That is WIERD. Another inconvience is a lack of the volume bar on the on-screen display. Sometimes you are wondering whether remote works or not until you discover that was a pause in the music and you crancked the volume too much. And I was totally amazed that you CAN NOT change video sourse to other than the sound from the remote!!!

    Strength:

    Great sound when it works.

    Weakness:

SERVICE - DO NOT COUNT ON SERVICE!! Read problems others are having with Denon's Service center.

DENON HAS HORRIBLE REAPIR AND RETRUN SERVICE. First had problems with Rear channels going out and then the entire system would crash after about 30 minutes of play. I sent to Denon reapir (THEY HAVE HORRIBLE REPAIR AND RETURN SERVICE). First they said nothing was wrong and then I told them they would have to listen/test the system for about 30 minutes before a problem could be diagnosed (like read the problem report I sent dip%&*#)....Upon closer inspection, they found a bad soldering joint and got the unit back to me after about 3 MONTHS!! The unit has been performing flawlessly for about a month and now a high pitch buzz is emitting through my speakers, but this enigma quits when I pull the sub channel out - oh no please don't tell me it has to go back to New Jersy for another season!! There are too many strong competitors out there - choose somebody that has real service!

sound price options on screen display remote is good for stock

    Weakness:

no removable power cord binding posts should accept spades gets pretty hot even with suggestive space design ( it looks less hi end then some recievers in its price range) PRICE WHEN BRAND NEW WAY TO MUCH MARK UP!!!

i am so so so happy with this reciever it does everything i want it too. the difference between this and denons lower models is huge. I dont notice subtle differences in sound so for me to notice is a huge deal. There is so much more going on in the soundtrack then i ever realized. This reciever has motivated me to really get into the sound aspect of HT. I cant say enough good things about this reciever. By the way i paid 1250 CAnadian for the unit and feel like thats a good price. Even when i get into seperates i will probably use this as a pre/pro. So if u can find one of these save the money compared to the 3803 because its a very good center piece of anyones HT. Not bad with music either.

    Strength:

reasonable price for reasonable performance like the capacity for feeding 8 speakers in listening room. easy to set up if you read the manual and do what is says exactly flawless layout of options on menu beautifully crafted receiver, a real looker nice feel to the knobs and not overly busy layout of controls

    Weakness:

Not enough power, won't play real loud on certain music--try DVD Audio disk of Blue Man, to hear this receiver distort in all eight channels at once--ouch! Not a very musical sounding receiver, though no receiver out of japan has every been musical, or easy to listen to A compromised product for a compromised budget--reasonably priced for a mediocre performance--don't expect miracles, they don't happen in the Japan audio world

I bought this unit over a year ago and remained relatively happy with it. It has the advantage over its best competitor (Onkyo) of having the capacity to power eight speakers which does make a difference when using the 6.1 DVD disks. Still, it has it limitations and should not be conceived as a high end, audiophile grade piece of equipment. Let's be real, it is an above average Japanese receiver at an above average price: you get what you pay for. While it is not bright or edgy, it is also not smooth, musical, or euphonic. It is also noticeably lacking in the power department, as there is noticeable (though not offensive) distortion when you push it on loud passages, particularly in the base region if you don't put in the high pass filters on the sound around speakers. If I had to do it over again, and could squeeze the extra money out, I would buy the 482, which by all acounts is the real value in the Denon line. This one is for those of us who cheapout and go with what we can reasonable afford rather than what we should splurge out and treat ourselves with. Ultimately going with seperate components in a SOTA multimedia system is where it is at, and I hope to be with that level of performance in the coming few years--assuming I don't win the lottery before that!
