I am in the process of upgrading my system, and have done quite a bit of interviewing at our local high end dealers, and while they have differing points of view on the Denon products (mostly high marks), they all agree on one thing: the customer service with Denon is one of the worst in the industry. Not only is the customer service shoddy, the warantee is also one of the lowest in the industry. The common thread appeared to be constant bickerings between Denon Japan, and Denon USA regarding product and marketing. One dealer explained that his rep has long stopped trying to defend Denon''s tactics, and just says "I know, I know". That being said, I still intend to purchase the Denon AVR4800. This decision is based on the high marks viewed here, and the real world tests with my neighbors 4800. I too have been thoroughly bowled over by this product.

EVERYTHING, TO MANY TO LIST

Weakness:

PRETTY HEAVY. YOU HAD BETTER FIND A VERY STURDY RACK TO HOLD THIS SUCKER.(MY SHERWOOD AMP. WEIGHS 70LBS.! MY RACK IS VERY HEAVY DUTY.

I DECIDED TO UPGRADE MY A/V RECIEVER AND THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST INCREDIBLE DEALS I HAVE EVER COME ACROSS. I FOUND THIS THX ULTRA CERTIFIED RECIEVER FOR A DIRT CHEAP PRICE OF $999.99. "UNREAL" THIS RECIEVER IS THE TOTAL BOMB. I RESEARCHED THIS MODEL AND THE DENON 4802 EXTENSIVLY. YEAH THE 4802 HAS A FEW MORE BELLS AND WHISTLES, BUT OVERALL AFTER COMPARING THE TWO MODELS, I CAME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT THA 4800 WAS MY BEST BET. I''LL EXPLAIN. FIRST OF ALL, I COULDNT FIND THE 4802 FOR UNDER $1750.00. I FOUND THE 4800 FOR $1,000.00. YES I REALIZE THAT THE 4802 HAS EXTRA POWER TO SUPPLY THE REAR SURROUNDS OPPOSED TO THE 4800 WHICH REQUIRES AN ADDITIONAL AMP. TO TAKE FULL ADVANTAGE OF THX EX. NO PROBLEM, I PICKED UP A SHERWOOD NEWCASTLE 5/CHANNEL AMP. OFF UBID FOR $350.00. NO THE AMP ISNT A DENON, NOR DOES IT HAVE THX CERTIFICATION, BUT IT DOES PROVIDE THE SAME POWER TO THE REAR SURROUNDS AS THE 4802 DOES.THE POWER THIS AMP GIVES OUT IS VERY CLEAN AND THERE IS DEFINATLY NOT AN AUDIBLE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THIS AMP. AND A THX CERTIFIED AMP. WE ARE TALKING SUROUND REARS HERE PEOPLE, THEY ARE ACTUALLY ONLY RECIEVING ONE CHANNELS INFO ANYWAY. MOVIES ARE NOT ENCODED WITH DISCRETE 7.1 SURROUND, THEY ARE ENCODED IN 6.1 AT MOST. SO IF YOU DO THE MATH, I ACTUALLY SAVED MYSELF $400.00 AND NOW HAVE A THX ULTRA CERTIFIED RECIEVER AND A VERY OUTSTANDING 5/CHANNEL 120/WPC AMPLIFIER. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR, SHOP AROUND. AS FOR THE PERFORMANCE OF THIS RECIEVER, IT WAS EVERYTHNG I HOPED FOR. MORE POWER THAN MOST PEOPLE NEED! THIS UNIT WORKED PERFECTLY RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX.YOU SIMPLY WILL BE AMAZED WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE BACK PANEL OF THIS UNIT. INPUTS AND OUTPUTS EVERYWHERE. MUSIC DVDS SOUND FLAWLESS, AND 5 AND 7 CHANNEL STEREO ARE A COOL ADDITION. THIS UNIT DOES IT ALL AND YOU WONT BE DISSAPOINTED. TOUGH LUCK TO THE GUY BELOW WHO GOT THE BAD UNIT IN THE REVIEW BELOW. HEY @#$! HAPPENS. ITS A GREAT UNIT JUST READ THE REVIEWS.i ALSO HIGHLY RECOMEND 6TH AVE. MY SYSTEM CONSISTS OF THE FOLLOWING COMPONENTS: MITSUBISHI 55807 WIDE SREEN (HIGH DEF) DENON 4800 A/V RECIEVER DENON 2800 PROG. SCAN DVD PLAYER WHARFEDALE MODUS MUSIC 1.6''S (FRONTS) WHARFEDALE SAPPHIRE BLUE 89''S(REARS) POLK AUDIO CS400i (CENTER CHANNEL) SHERWOOD NEWCASTLE 5CH/120WPC AMP. *ALL SPEAKERS ARE BI-WIRED WITH SILVER SONIC T-14 SPEAKER WIRE.

Strength:

Great sound.

Weakness:

Initial quality control? FAN RUNS ALMOST CONSTANTLY. It''s real annoying during quiet passages, especially when it cycles on and off.

I had a similar experience as Mark from IL. Fortunately I had hooked up my older speaker system - my new Paradigm system was on order. I brought my 4800 in for repair. I didn''t bother asking them what was wrong. When I hooked everything up with my newly arrived Paradigm system, the front left channel was dead. Another trip back for repairs. When I got it back, everything worked fine - except the cooling fan runs almost constantly. Does this happen with anyone elses? Do I have to bring it back again?

Customer Service

Well, in response to the mongoloid below attempting to flame me below, let me fill in some details.

The unit IMMEDIATELY fried my speaker the moment I turned it on. I did NOT even turn it up. I took the receiver to a Denon Authorized Service center and they found that two transistors were shorted, and the unit sent unregulated straight voltage to the speaker. This would fry a $50,000 speaker Senor Genius. BTW - my speakers were Paradigm Monitor 9s, hardly wimpy or cheap speakers.

I have since received another AVR-4800 from 6th Ave (I highly recommend them - great shopping experience despite this problem - not their fault) and like it a lot. It seems like a great unit, but I've yet to get my fried Paradigm fixed to enjoy it to its potential.

The point here was NOT to say that Denon products were crap. In fact, were you literate, you'd see that I said that I'm a loyal fan of Denon products. My issue was with their customer service.

NOTE - NEW DEVELOPMENT...due to my pressure on Denon Customer Service, they've changed their tune. They talked to their lawyers, and admitted that they have to cover the effects of their defective product. SO....they will be paying for two new woofers for my Monitor 9.

So let me reiterate - I am still very much a loyal fan of Denon products - for mid-level stuff they're a great manufacturer. HOWEVER - I'm not too impressed by a company that tries to weasel out of a clear cut case of THEIR defective product causing damage to MY system. Just because they realized they were backed into a corner when I threaten litigation does not a good customer service center make.

So anyway - Samuel - WTF are you talking about?

"maybe if you had some good speakers for the powerhouse of a system the 4800 is, then it wouldn't have fried them. as for the 4800, you never owned it. your buddy does and you just can't take it. "

Uhhhhhhh, oohhhhhhhkaaaaay?!?!? Save it for the trailer park kid.

Strength:

THX Cinema, 24bit 96k dacs on all channels; Great on music and movies

Weakness:

None other than DSP modes are pretty lame other than Matrix

I have had this receiver for a couple of days but I am already very impressed. Was thinking of separates but this receiver challenges separates at half the price. Sound is clear and bass is deep. Substantially better on music than the Yamaha, which is still a good piece and great for movies. I do not use the EX feature due to lack of space and funds. Will update this in a month or so. Associated equipment:

Def Tech 2004s, CLR 2500, BPX 1s, Sony DVD 7700.

Strength:

One of the best sounding A/V receivers available. "State of the Art" reproduction of both music and movie sound. Huge array of features and capabilities. Digital processing precision that surpasses the speed of some professional grade PC's.

Weakness:

None so far.

I have listened to the AVR4800 for three weeks. My criteria for considering a receiver at this price point was it had to produce both two channel stereo and movie surround sound equal to or better than the three or four top receivers on the market. Since I was willing to spend $2200 for a receiver, I wanted to be 100 percent certain it could perform with the best. The 4800 met and exceeded my expectations. I decided to purchase the Denon and for my sonic hearing ability it is certainly one of the finest receivers available today.

The 4800 is a receiver that will display superb audio performance when processed through quality speakers and the use of high bandwidth optical wire for digital signal transfer. I also found that using a high quality subwoofer that has a similar low frequency tone characteristic as the other 5 speakers adds tremendous impact to music and movies. The 4800 can bring out the best or worst in equipment. My system consists of PSB Silver-i's in front, C6 Center, PSB Bronze's in the rear and a Velodyne 10" powered sub. All the speakers are biwired with heavy monster cable. Currently, my DVD player is a Pioneer DV 525, an inexpensive unit, but it gets the job done extremely well (waiting for soon to come DVD-Audio players). Monitor is Hitachi 50" PTV.

The Denon produces a very warm sound, powerful clean amps, the highs are elegant and precise, midrange is clear and controlled, the bass is solid, but not overpowering. The excellent bass management benefits from the 12dB/24dB Linkwitz-Riley crossover. This processor is required for THX certification. Movie sound is very dynamic, in both Dolby Digital and DTS it will go from dead silence to room shaking special effects for unbelievable realism. 5/7channel stereo adds another amazing dimension to CD's. The 4800 is time consuming to setup, it has an impressive set of controls for tailoring DSP preference, however it will reward you with great sound if done right. Obviously, it is a solid investment that will pay you back each time you turn it on. Highly Recommended.

Weakness:

Very confusing to set up right off the bat..

Just Purchased, 2 days prior. Wanted the Denon AVR-5700. This unit is brand new to the market and out does the 5700. It has 15 watts less per channel but who cares? Looked at seperates, but at 4k on up, why? This unit so far is by far the best reciever I have listened to. I auditioned the Marantz, I have owned 2, which are great products. For under 2000 this unit is outstanding,.Trying to get the damn thing working was a story in itself. I am sure its going to take awhile to get used to it. Steep learning curve.... Discounts dont abound because this product is brand new, unlike the 5700 which I could I have gotten under 2000, or the Yamaha dsp-a 1 for under 1500!... Did get it for 1700 which is not bad.....Will post again after a few months... Dan

This is the best receiver, you just have to not worry about getting the cheapest price! Andrew how can you blame Denon for your mistake? Buying from non-authorized dealers always means no warranty.Authorized dealers buy their product from Denon not the grey market.
You should be giving yourself no stars and not the AVR4800, which is by far the best receiver for the money! I could not be happier.

Weakness:

None so far, remote that everyone complains about, does'nt bother me.

After owning 3300 for 6 months, heard a loud squeal from the unit. After this happened a couple of more times, unit was sent to Denon for service. Finally after 6 weeks, they sent a new one back. After my experience, and from reading other reviews,I am very concerned about the quality of the 3300(runs way too hot) I was able to exchange it for the 4800. Just an awesome unit! Runs very cool, even after long usage at high volume levels. Back panel not flimsy, like the 3300,more digital inputs. Not set up yet for surround EX,but can't wait to get the extra speakers and amp eventually. Could'nt be happier with this receiver! Worth the extra money!
