I recently obtained the Denon AVR-5700. Prior to this unit I had a Yamaha DSPA1. The dealer from whom I got the Denon tried to convince me that the Yamaha was a better receiver. No way!!! The Yamaha is a great receiver but the Denon is still better. The sound from the Denon is much closer to what is found in a theater. The clarity of the dialogue in movies is much better. It performs great with Def Tech 3000's. Highly recommend this product.

Strength:

Explosive power, easy set-up, great sound

Weakness:

none

Well, I'll admit that I'm new to this "audiophile" game. Just purchased my first sound system consisting of NHT 2.9 fronts (bi-wired), NHT 1.5 rears, NHT Sub-Two, and NHT Center-2, powered by Denon AV 5700 and connected with Monster Z-1 cable. (Paid $1995 for the Denon from Ultimate Electronics) I just ordered a Denon 3700 DVD/CD player, so haven't purchased any decent interconnects yet. Have been playing my CD's (mostly classical) on my wife's crappy $69 boom box CD player, connected with hair-thin RCA cable. Still, the sound is awesome! I can't imagine needing more power than the 5700 kicks out. Some warned me that the NHT 2.9's were power-hungry, but the 5700 allows me to play at almost unlistenable levels (CD's and videos) without any distortion that I can detect. The sound is gorgeous, warm and (depending on the recording) as "live" as you'd want. Am considering Pure Silver Sound or ZCable interconnects (both digital and analog).

In short, I highly recommend the Denon 5700 (as well as the NHT speakers), but NOT the $69 boombox.

This receiver is in a word incredible. Tons of power. I am using a pair of Pinnacle Classic Towers with Sony 650D DVD player and the sound purity is awesome. Some of my CD's sound so much better playing though this unit I can't believe it. Yeah it's heavy, but what do you think supplies the power this baby has. I leave it on all the time and it runs great. The bass this baby pumps out is awesome. Go Denon. This receiver is ready for the future boys and girls. Get one today!!!

I started the process of upgrading from the Denon 5600 I have had for a couple years. I had stashed away plenty of cash to buy a set of separates that would really sound awesome.

My top choices were the Lexicon MC-1, Lexicon DC-2, Meridian 561, Proceed or the less expensive Sony 9000ES and Sunfire Theater Grand. For amps I was going to get the Sunfire Cinema Grand, Sunfire Cinema Grand Signature, Rotel, Parasound, and Proceed.

I decided that I like the MC-1 best and was ready to trade in the 5600 and get $2000 credit toward it and pay $4000 for the MC-1 and $2300 for the Sunfire Cinema Grand 200 W amp.

On that day, I finally did an A/B comparison between the MC-1 and Denon AVR5700 in the store. I used the Denon DVD5000 with Crimson Tide DVD and 2 Reference Recording Label CDs with Big Band music by Dick Hyman. The speakers were the same as what I have at home: B&W 803s in front; B&W 805s in back and B&W HTM center with B&W ASW 3000 300 watt sub.

To my surprise, the sounds from both were on the same level. While I can say there was a difference in sound, I cannot say that the difference is a quality difference. I would not be able to tell you which is which based on superior quality because the subtle differences were not a result of quality. The difference was basically a function of each unit being different.

What amzed me even more is that I found the Denon 5700 sound to be better than some of the moderate priced separates combos like B&K Reference and Sony 9000ES. It was also right on par with the DC-2.

The ONLY thing there that sounded noticeably better than the 5700 was the Krell setup of the 5 250 Mono amps and and Krell Theater Standard processor. That was it.

I know I may get some challenges on this, but that's ok. I know what I heard and there is no doubt whatsoever that the Denon AVR 5700 more than holds its own against names like Meridian and Lexicon and in someways (like the # of digital possibilities and number of video/audio components you can connect to it).

Before making a comment on these products and telling me that the Lexicon or others are better, ask yourself if you did a side by side A/B switch to compare like I did. If not, then there is no basis at all for argument. You cannot say something is better based on what people have told you or what you have read in a magazine. That is ridiculous. If you do try to make claims w/o having done an A/B switch comparison, you are not being objective in your observations.

Because it is on such a high level, the 5700 is a major value. I do not know if they are charging enough money for it. When I see the prices of Lexicon, Meridian, and Proceed, I conclude that they could charge a hell of a lot more!

Does this site ever need and active moderator with a quick delete key.
By the way, this unit is now the top of the receiver class. The only thing might touch it is the B&K AVR202. At this point the DSP-A1 is old news. The 5700 has the best DACs and Processors that money can buy. The amp is good, if not great (as a separate, it is great for a receiver).

Recieved my 5700 on friday and have had the weekend to try it out.Am amazed at the clarity and definition this unit puts out. I have
it paired with a Denon DVD 5000 and am useing Infinity 7.1 Kappas
for front right and left and Kappa center speakers for center and
right and left rear. I am also useing two SSW-210 Kappa powered subs.
All Kimber PBJ interconnects and speaker wire. I wish the 5700 had an
easier way of by wireing my speakers. Anyway, this receiver is well worth
every penny I paid. I am also amazed at the seperation in the channels.
Its on screen programing makes setup fast easy and painless. I think
this receiver will be the refrence standard. Its definetly the one to beat,
and it won't be easy.

This unit is not much different from the 5600! Denon will never produce anything that will impress me. Never have, never will. If you want the best sound and processing for your home theater, do yourself a favor and and go buy the Yamaha DSP-A1. And if you really want to know Denon, just give their sales rep a call and talk to one. If that doesn't change your mind, nothing will.

Anybody have any comments on this unit. I'm looking for a review of this product as I am contemplating trading in my Yamaha DSPA1 for the Denon AVR-5700 unit.
I listened to the Denon with Definitive Technology speakers (I'm not sure of the model, but they were $7000/pair for the MAINS alone) and the Denon drove these speakers with amazing results. I was blown away by the DEMO. It was at Bay/Bloor Radio in Toronto. However, I'm not sure if this is enough to justify a $2000 difference between my DSPA1 and the AVR-5700.

Any comments would be much appreciated.

Miguel Stanic, did you know that you've already got the best proccessor(Yamaha DSP-A1)which is really putting thx-proccessing in the shade with their own Tri-field Cinema DSP's, and more hi-fi dsp's you can play with the music you like. DENON 5700 just have DTS decoder built-in and more power on the amplifier.
Meaning when it comes to power amps its DENON but when it comes to real proccessing of course DSP-A1,so its really up to you what you really want(concentrate on the power or on the proccessing).Hope it will help.
