Strength:

Lots of power and features.

Weakness:

Maybe a little bulky.

Great for giving enough power for music and movies. I just love the 7.1 channel capabilities for listening to movies. I'm very pleased with this product! One other thing; I think the remote is really good. I mean, it can run all my integrated components (DVD, TV, VCR, etc.) and the display is very good. It has a "learning" capacity for handling all of your other remote control features. I'm really not sure why others find this remote lacking. But anyway, this is my opinion. I mention it's bulky (and heavy), but perhaps that's to be expected when getting so much power and features. I just mention this in case that's important to someone.

Strength:

Clear and detailed

Weakness:

remote, bass management options

This is a follow-up on my previous review for music.

I said the highs sounded a bit "ringy" -- well, it was
my cables. I was using 10 AWG Monster "zip" cord. It
isn't a good idea. Going to a 11 AWG bundle of 24
separately insulated conductors, the highs became smooth!

So, don't use bad cabling (no lamp cord!). I love the sound now. Clear, detailed, and not subdued in the highs, yet still smooth. This is a great product. 4.5 for value, but now 5 for overall.

Strength:

Outstanding Power Over all ease of use Took 5 min for my wife to figure Out. Sales man from Tweeter

Weakness:

Remote and On screen set up. Lack of web help from Denon.

Just out standing,Waited a long time too make the right choice. Denon truely get's that people who listen to Music also watch Movies. After some set up time and adjustments this unit is worth every penny.
The 5800 smooth sound and power make listening to music fun again and movies at home like being at the movies. If you are looking for just one unit this is the one. It does have a few little problems the remote is nice to look at but hard to use , Also do the software update and the on screen needs updating which Denon says is around the corner with a software update too Dolby 2, But nothing is posted on the Web
site as of yet. Still If you can only have on unit check this one out.

Strength:

Outstanding detail and clarity on digital-in on music.

Weakness:

Digital-in on audio sounds a bit ringy in the highs, and mid-bass is a bit weak.

This is an audio music review -- I don't have surround speakers yet. I am hoping to use this receiver for all my audio, and not upgrade to a separate power amp or high-end CD player.

I have had the receiver for under a month, and am now upgrading my speakers from Snell Acoustics E2. They were sounding too thin, especially with a "brighter" DAC in the Denon compared to the Micromega Stage 3 analog out.

I am trying out mostly-broken-in B&W Nautilus 805 speakers with it now. The midrange is a lot fuller now.

The digital-in on the Denon blows away the analog-in from the Micromega in terms of detail. There is nothing to be lost in that department with the Denon. I can't hear a difference between Direct and Pure Direct modes -- which means that having the other ciruitry on in the "Direct" mode doesn't degrade sound quality. This points to a well designed product. The sound quality of "stereo", which uses only 4 DACs instead of the quad-averaged dual differential 16 DACs of Direct mode, is only slightly degraded. It is still very good.

The Denon DAC is also "brighter" than the Micromega, and is a little thinner in the upper bass (but that might be an artifact of less brightness, and me turning up the volume to compensate on the Micromega). The extra brightness is requiring me to upgrade my already bright speakers (I specifically chose the YBA amp and Micromega CD because they were softer in the highs). There also appears to be a bit of a "ring" in the highs at a particular frequency (could it be my aging ears?). I don't really notice it much with the B&W speakers, but I did with the old ones. This is a minor point, but you might want to listen critically to the highs yourself on a good CD.

I don't have equipment to swap in and out to compare vs. other audiophile stuff, but I would have to say that the sound quality is amazing for a receiver. I love the detail! However, I'm sure many audiophiles may prefer the subdued highs of other equipment (even though it is usually artificial -- I bet the Denon is more accurate). I am going to use the digital-in and a consumer DVD player to give me great sound from now on. I'll always wonder what I'm missing by not getting audiophile stuff, but I'm content that this is close enough.

I'd give it 4.5 stars, both for value and overall, but I'll round up to 5.

Casual Listener

I'm not a owner (yet) but have been very impressed with all of the demo's I've heard with the 5800. I just have a couple of questions that I can't seem to get a straight answer from the literature thats on the net.

1. Is the 5800 or the 4802 future format upgradable like the B&K307 or the Integra 9.1? They are quick to point out this feature but I can't seem to find the backing for those that say that the 5800 is.

2. Has anyone heard about an new model coming out (5801 etc.)? If the feature/performance jump is good than I might wait, but on the other hand, there might be good deals coming for the 5800 if its everything I need.

3. Has anyone used the newer Denon touchpad remote? Is it better than the standard one everyone is complaining about?

4. Does anyone have a M&K S150THX speaker group hooked up to this bad boy? I haven't listened to the combo with movies yet but I bet it's outstanding.

Please email me direct so I don't get people mad by misusing this space.

I have given the system a 5 so I don't affect the rating of this review outlet.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

Strength:

Unlimited inputs, sound. Many many speaker inputs (9 in total plus the sub).

Weakness:

Manual instructions is very poor. No 'on screen menu' in monitor out Component video.

I have just hooked my system up and the only word that comes out from my mouth is A M A Z I N G!!!. You have to listen to 'The Fifth Element' or 'Jumanji' to know what I am talking about. I am really enjoing this receiver but there are two things I still can't believe:

1) you do not have 'on screen menu' in the component monitor out video. If you plug all your equipments in the Component Video inputs and conect the Component Video out to the TV you won't be able to see the 'on screen menu' of the receiver. You have to connect a S-Video cable from the monitor output of the receiver to the S-Video in jack of the TV and keep on changing from Video 1 to Video 2 on the TV to be able to see the 'on screen menu'. It is really a pain in the neck. That is something I can't understand. How Denon missed that!!!. Furthermore, it is mentioned in the Manual, so it is even worst they did it on purpose!!!
2) The other thing I don't like is that you cannot cut the frequencies you don't wish to go to the speakers. I mean, a friend of mine has the SP-9 from Sony and he cuts the frquencies of the rear speakers at 200Hz and the front at 150Hz, for example, and the rest send it to the sub. You have to be very careful when setting the individual tone control this receiver has for each speaker (bass and treble) because in a deep bass punch you can blow out the rear speakers in a second. So you have to do it 'by ear'.

Summing up, even with the above mentioned 'defects', the AVR-5800 is a great receiver and I would encourage anyone to buy it without hesitation.
