Strength:

Lots of digital ins and outs. Heck, lots of ins and outs period! Appearance is really nice too. Heavy duty binding posts on speaker outs. Built really heavy duty (31 pounds!). PRICE! I mean come on, $194.00 direct...there''s nothing in that price range that can touch the fidelity of this receiver!

Weakness:

No phono preamp, so I''ll have to get an outboard one. Other than that, about the only other thing I can gripe about is that the remote doesn''t light up or glow in the dark.

Wow! I heard this receiver and soooo wanted it but it was out of my price range at circuit city and the other local dealer that sell it, so I had kind of just settled on figuring that I would end up with another JVC, or a Pioneer or Technics (not to knock them, they are all fine products for what they are). Then I found you can purchase it refurbished direct from Harmon/Kardon.com for only $194.00! I have only had this receiver for a few days but I am totally impressed with the sound quality, I''m noticing details (in music listening, especially) on cd''s that I had never noticed before! It''s not the loudest, highest powered receiver on the market, but it has enough power for anything I need, and probably enough for the majority of home theater users, with the exception of those who have a large theater room. I think the biggest thing is making sure you have it set up right for all the components and speaker you have hooked up to it, and having the speaker balances and size settings right. I know some have complained about the remote, but other than it not lighting up or having glow in the dark buttons, it works fine for me. I would highly reccomend this receiver to anyone looking to get into home theater, but be sure to check out the specials on Harmon/Kardon''s website before you purchase, as they have lots of good deals there, and unlike a lot of other companies, the refurbished H/K stuff still has the full factory warranty, not a shortened one like a lot of other companies, which is a big plus. I have a set of Advent Eternity towers in front, a set of Advent Baby II in the rear, and an Advent Audio Focus center channel speaker. I am currently looking at several different powered subs, but even without a sub I have no trouble getting low end with this receiver. I can see where especially with theater that a sub would really help, though. I am totally happy with this receiver and would purchase it again in a heartbeat!

Strength:

sound quality appearance of the unit solid built quality

Weakness:

remote control is almost useless the unit produces lots of heat no A-B speakers output option

What an awesome receiver this HK AVR110 is as fas as the quality of sound is concerned! Over 2 years ago, I purchased a refurbished Doby Pro-Logic HK AVR-40 from U-bid. That unit, when working, produced decent quality sound for Hi-fi musical listening. However, within the 2-year period of manufacturer''''s warranty, it have had 3 repairs at an authorized HK shop (HK paid for them though). I was told by the HK authorized repair shop after the 3rd repair that this unit could no longer be repaired. That was when I emailed Harmon Kardon Customer Service to find out whether or not they could help. Two weeks later, HK emailed me back asking me to ship the defective AVR40 back to them with proof of original purchase, plus copies of the 3 repairs. Ten days later, I received a refurbished AVR-110 from HK as a replacement. I consider this great HK customer service. 40 watt/channel sounds pretty low at first, but that is at high current. This unit has all the power I will ever need in my small living room (16'''' x 14''''). The sound output, whether it is for home theatre or for music listening, is incredibly defined, crystal-clear crisp. DD 5.1 sounds super, so does analog sources like CDs.

Strength:

Clean Sound

Weakness:

Won't fit in most cabinets

Well, Well What do we have here? A Harman Kardon that I didn't have to return because it didn't work. HK must have hired new engineers and fired their old ones.

The reciever is stylish, it sounds crisp and clean, what I expect from an HK. THe sound of an HK is second to none (when it's working) I believe they got it right this time.

Strength:

Flexible switching, clean sound, great looks

Weakness:

Reliability?,Terrible remote

This was my first foray into DTS/Dolby Digital. I was looking for something that had extremely flexible inputs (i.e. S-Video, 3 optical, 1 optical out), and was clean sounding. After looking at many reviews here, I decided on this receiver. Overall, I am extremely happy with it. It makes my CSW speakers and Sony sub (per reviews here) sound great. Power is not a concern, it goes extremely loud. My only concern is the reliability of the unit. It would power off sporatically when I was driving a DTS movie to -10 or above. I did not have the surrounds hooked up. When I hooked up the surrounds, the problem seemed to disappear. I will keep a close eye on this, but I think it's fine now. The remote is useless, but you don't buy the receiver for the remote. Bought a Sony RM-VL900 (per reviews here), which is an awesome 60 buck remote, and I'm happy now. I will rate the unit 5 stars for value (Harman Outlet rocks) and 5 stars for overall. May change later if reliability is a concern.

Strength:

Quality engineering. Looks great. Drives everything I through at it. Easy to customize. The A+B/LFE option.

Weakness:

I don't really mind the remote. No A/B speaker option

This is the best reciever I've heard. Of course I've only heard 3, but it was the best. Virtually no noise and great power. I'm waiting to break in the new speakers that I bought at the same time, so I'll submit a real review later. I just wanted to respond to the PS2 problem. Its most likely the PS2. I've had a whole bunch of problems with it. It skipps, freezes, and the sudio cuts in and out sometimes. Not really sure. I should contact Sony, but I've been too busy. I've put that thing on 2 recievers. When it works, it works great though like you siad =) oh well just wanted to let you know its the PS2.

Strength:

Inexpensive, sounds good, looks nice, easy to set up and use, lots of digital coax and optical connections, lots of lines in

Weakness:

Remote programs badly, not possible to bi-wire speakers.

After much online research, the AVR100 was the model that I selected. But when I realised that the 110 was the upgrade of that model but with DTS, I went for this one unseen. And boy, am I glad I did. It looks and sounds great, and DVD movies are a revelation heard through it. For example, the opening sequence of Toy Story 2 is stunning, as is the opening battle in Gladiator in DTS; clear, crisp sound from all sides! Anyone who doubts the value of surround sound should be made to listen to these two segments! Even my wife likes it!

The 110 is easy to set up and, once programmed, it will remember your settings. It sounds good for movies, though as it is set up in my cellar, sorry basement, without an external aerial, FM radio unsurprisingly sounds moderate at best. I have it wired up to a 32' JVC D-series telly via component, a Toshiba SD1600 DVD player on coax (an excellent budget player IMO), and the speakers are Infinity Reference 30s (on large) for the fronts, Infinity US-1 sats (on small) for the surrounds, and an Infinity CC-3 (also on small) for the centre, all of them very decent bits of kit for the price. Finally there's a JBL ARC8 sub, which doesn't have enormous output or much really deep bass, but is perfectly adequate for the smallish room it's in. And it all sounds great on movies, which is what I primarily bought it for. The Pro Logic decoding mode sounds pretty good on suitably encoded TV broadcasts and non-5.1 encoded DVDs too.

Others have complained about the remote, so I will merely say, "Me too," and move along to the fact that it does not support a second set of speakers, like the Technics mentioned above does, or that it does not support biwiring, as the Technics also does, which might matter to you. However, the Technics, although *rated* louder at 100w per channel as opposed to the 110's 40w, doesn't *sound* any louder or better, which is the main thing, and, worse, it doesn't have any digital coax connections on the back whatsoever, which is a serious shortcoming in my book. The 110 is easier to set up and use as well. So I would take the 110 over the 1040 any day.

I paid $570Can plus taxes for mine. I think that's a pretty keen price, especially as Futureshop.ca are doing it for $699 plus taxes last time I looked. I think this receiver is probably as good as you can get at this price, and maybe quite a bit more, and would recommend it to anyone looking to get the best possible receiver in this price range.

Strength:

best A/V receiver for my price range. Has many inputs/outputs, i have 4 JBL SP6s and a KLH 12" sub, all for under $800.00 and i don't go to the theater anymore. I love my system, and the price!

Weakness:

seems to heat up after a few hours, a small fan cured this, not really a problem, show me a receiver that doesn't..

Don't argue with it, just buy it, it handles a butt-load, and your wife won't slap you when she finds out how much it costs...nice job Harmon/Kardon!!

Strength:

Great looks, sound, plays Mp3's, lots of hook-ups

Weakness:

Little underpowered

I have always known Harman Kardon to make great sounding gear. But not until recently was I able to purchase one myself. When it finally arrived, I was impressed with its great looks, and size to match. It has plenty of hook-ups for my use.
It took me about a month to build up enough cash to afford some decent speakers. For speakers I went with Axiom's M60 Ti. Great sounding speaker! No better speaker for the money. Check em out at www.axiomaudio.com.
After I got everything hooked up I tried several types of music. The sound was great. My only complaint was that you really have to push the receiver to get any volume out of it. The dial starts at -80db, but you don't start to hear any real volume till about -25db. I didn't purchase this receiver to power a dance hall, so I knew that I didn't need alot of power. But a little more wouldn't have been missed.
Overall This is a great reveicer. It would fit into almost any home theater setup. I also have it hooked up to my home computer. I purchased the "Hercules Game Theater" soundcard, and used the optical out to provide the receiver with plenty of Mp3's =). Harman Kardon claimed that it would only decode Mp3 data, but I get sound in games, internet, and it even plays *.wav files. So I have no problem recomending it.

Strength:

Sound. Simply put it is amazing!

Weakness:

If anything it is the remote, but that is just being picky! I just want a mute button and volume control.

Sound to match the quality of Mozarts music and the thunder and fury of a tiger tank followed by a Twister. Don't let the 40watts fool you because if your just into numbers than you don't really care about the sound anyway. Harmon Kardon has done a great job. I have it hooked up to Bose Accoustmas for my front channels and rear surround and I'm using a Bose 141 for the center. I have heard things now threw the Dolby Digital and just PCM cds that I have never heard before just those pretty little nuances (spelling is wrong I'm sure) that the composer or director had in their head. I've used Marantz and love it and still love it and it has a good life being used with the four track recorder in the play room. Now however my home theater sounds better than most of the theaters and I'm most pleased. In doubt listen to it.

GREAT SOUND, LOOKS GREAT, VERY WELL BUILT, TONS OF FEATURES

Weakness:

NONE!!!!!!!

Simply fabulous receiver. I purchased this item refurbished/factory reconditioned, and I only paid $280! For that price this reciever is incredible. It has all the features I could ever want or need, it looks great, it is very well built, it has tons of flexibility and features, and best of all, the sound is perfect. Handles highs and lows very well. Really no bad part about it. Because Harman Kardon has a seemingly bad history as far as items breaking down goes, I reccomend buying their products through their online outlet website at www.harmanaudio.com Here you can find a wide range of new and reconditioned items for significant price reduction, I'm talking hundreds of dollars saved. Anyway, I highly reccomend this product, so far it's been extraordinary!
