I received this from a lady at work after she replaced the system with a Sonos. I use it as my primary audio switching unit in my office. I have my computer, Sony CDR-W33 and Kenwood TS-590 amateur radio attached to it.

Strength:
VERY CLEAN SMOOTH SOUND AND PLENTY OF PUNCH.MANY PEOPLE HATE THE REMOTE BUT I THINK IT IS INNOVATIVE AND JUST TAKES TIME TO GET USE TO.
Weakness:
I JUST CAN NOT WRITE ANYTHING BAD ABOUT THIS RECEIVER,IT HAS SERVED ME WELL AND CONTINUES TO DO SO! BUT WHAT DOES IRRITATE ME ARE SO CALLED AUDIO FILES THAT DON'T UNDERSTAND THAT THE HUMAN EAR CAN ONLY HEAR SO MUCH.UNLESS YOU HAVE A BIG RED CAPE AND AN "S" ON YOUR CHEST YOU WILL NOT FIND MANY FAULTS WITH THE AVR-40 I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS HK. I HAVE PAIRED IT WITH NUMEROUS SETS OF SPEAKERS(CURRENTLY WITH BOSTON ACOUSTICS ) ALL I CAN SAY IS IF YOU CAN GET YOUR HANDS ON AN AVR-40,DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND GRAB IT. Customer Service NEVER HAD TO USE IT! Similar Products Used: PHASE LINEAR 700 B AMP

Strength:
Simple,durable,all around good reciever.
Weakness:
Non-digital,and as mentioned that remote feels and looks goofy. I have had this reciever 3 years or so, and its been enjoyable. I really like the stereo sound of it,and like the fact you can upgrade it. It's not digital, but does have so many tweakable features it mates well to different HT set-ups. I wouldn't recommend it now with all the improvements over HT, but 3 years ago it was a great buy.I'll keep it till it dies. Similar Products Used: Many over the years. |

Bass response, overall sound quality. Having owned a top of the line Kenwood for 12 years, I decided to buy a transition receiver(hey,I'm cheap!). Similar Products Used: Kenwood |

The AVR 40 is one of the newer H/K receivers so I thought I'd get a listing started for it. I bought it about four months ago as a "back to school" present for myself for $340. I heard a few models from Kenwood, Onkyo and Sony before settling on this one. The models offered by the other brands have a lot more features and buttons but I think the H/K produced a cleaner, more effortless sound than any of them. Then again, I don't claim anything more than the average ear for sound. :-) |

What a great deal for an outstanding Dolby Prologic receiver for $139 (shipped) from U-bid. I am really impressed by the clean and smooth sound that this HK AVR40 receiver produces. Absolutely great for stereo music of all kinds! Home theatre sound is also good. The appearance is beautiful and elegant; the unit is solidly built. Negatives: ugly looking remote control, and no phono inputs. I would still give it 5 stars because of its quality and value. |

My thoughts on the AVR40 is that I feel for the price you should get a phono input and B speaker channels and what in the world was they thinking when they designed that remote I have no idea. The Wrap feature I do like. I have the previous model which is the AVR20MKII, and there is no way I would trade it in for the AVR40. Other than those faults I listed previous it is a good reciever. I just expected more from Harman Kardon. |
