Strength:

1. Incredible sound with movies. love the crisp clarity and wide band width.
2. You can control volume on each speaker.
3. able to select large or small speakers (soul purpose to hear bass in these speakers besides the subwoofer).
4. easy to understand. I don't know why other people could not understand the instructions most of it is commen sense. Although I did have to say the remote was kinda confusing.
5. comes with DTS, 5.1 DD, D prologic, HDCD, and others.
6. able to connect several amps to it. (A+)
7. 70 watts per speaker not 70 watts broken up into several speakers.
8. night listening mode. I have infants and boy does that feature come in handy.

Weakness:

NO LOUDNESS BUTTON, comes in 8ohms only, music sounds good seperations is great BUT impact in music isn't as great as good, appearence isn't as good looking as older models

This is my first A/V receiver I am blown away by it's seperation in movies, clarity, impacts sound great in movie mode voices can be heard with no problem, BUT in cd mode not as good and I prefer listening to music with 2 speakers only don't get me wrong it does sound very good in music mode I'm just picky when it comes to my music. radio sounds great no problems there. overall you can't find a better A/V receiver for the money and even some more expensive units aren't as good in performance believe me I've heard them.

So if you're thinking of purchasing the AVR510 believe me you won't regret it. it has the power yes it's only 70 watts but it's high current you'll notice the difference when you hear it and the clarity is superb with no hint of destortion.
if I had the option to buy it again I would!!!

Strength:

Power, RF shielding/grounding.

Weakness:

Manual

This unit was a replacement for my AVR-65 which had serious RF shielding/video noise problems. After a few back & forth e-mails with HK they agreed to send a new 510 in trade for the 65. I was impressed by this as other companies would probably just blow you off.
So far I have had 0 problems with video noise which has made me very happy. This is also the first receiver that I have had that does not go into protection mode,(shut down) during sudden loud scenes in movies. My Boston Acoustics towers were drawing more power than my last two receivers could handle. Not so with the 510. There seems to be plenty of power to spare.
The Logic 7 and Dolby Pro have a bit too much surround effects during regular TV watching for me so I use the Theater mode more than the others.
I had the previously mentioned problems with the remote. I could not program it to operate any of my other components. After a call to HK they sent the new remote which looks exactly like the original but only took minutes to program. Again I was impressed with the customer service.
The only room for improvement that I can see is with the manual. It is a bit confusing and hard to follow.
Over all I am very happy and will probably be a loyal HK customer for many years.

Weakness:

none to be had

I upgraded from my avr 300 which was already a great unit but this one is unbelievable. It has got to be one of the best audio/video receivers around.I dare the competition to compare. For anyone looking for a truly outstanding unit then this is the one.
Harman Kardon has done there homework and have perfected this unit. They have succeeded in getting all the glitches that they had in the previous units out.I tip my hat to them and say to anyone that has not tried this unit out that they do not know what they are missing.

Strength:

high current, 24/192DAC's,ultrawide bandwith, component video swithching and front digital inputs.

Weakness:

The remote and manual

This receiver is definitely one to own. It's packed with power with room to spare, and the dac's make dts and dd movies easier to watch over and over.
No one really mentions the ultrawide bandwidth technology which is very important when reproducing todays digital sources accurately and with breathtaking detail. The inputs on this receiver put my older hk's to shame and the sound quality doesn't even come close to my old jvc digital receiver, but in this case you get what you pay for.
HDCD decoding is definitely a plus on this receiver and for those who don't know it only works when using a cd player with a digital output. It also enhances the sound quality of all the other cds in your music library. I've listened to alot of receivers with many different speakers and none in a comparable price range come close to matching the sound quality of this receiver. With a whole slue of digital inputs and preamp outputs there's no reason in my mind if you're considering a home theatre and your living on a somewhat realistic budget this receiver is definitely one to buy, and will be one of the better decisions you'll make in your lifetime

-'tick' sound when adjusting the volume at high volume

About half a year ago i bought a new HK AVR300 receiver from my local audio shop. I returned it to the shop almost immediately because there was a noticeble 'click' sound when adjusting the volume. To make a long story short: I've owned 2 AVR300's and 1 AVR500 before I finally got the AVR510 ( which is actually called a AVR5000 in Europe ), and all the problem were gone.

I've installed the AVR510 two weeks agoo and i am totally satisfied now. The sound is superb, and I was able to connect all my audio equipment with all the possible connections ( audio + video ) for the first time.

Watching DVD's at home now is almost better than going to the cinema.

Two minor points: Until now I haven't been able to use the remote control with my existing TV set ( Philips ) although it should have been very easy according to the manual.
Another remark: as I've said I've returned all my previous receivers due to clicks when adjusting the volume. Well, it is not totally gone with this new AVR510. At very high volumes ( +2 dB ) the click is still there. ( I've tried this with no active source, because I still want to listen to my grandchildren over 40 years ! ). This won't bother anyone and it certainly shouldn't hold you back when considering buying this great machine !

Strength:

Looks of this Receiver are simply amazing.
Sound Quality is Unbeatable.
It has lots of power.
Great for movies.
Logic 7 a great feature.

Weakness:

What can I say there are none !

I knew as soon as we got this receiver it was going to be a blast for DVD watching and it has.

The receiver does Dolby Digital and DTS like no other receiver.

Ths sound this thing produces is great.

Logic 7 is a great feature to have (turns any 2 channel signal into a surround siganl using all 5 speakers).

Works great with our Polk Audio home theater speakers.

Strength:

Good power, MANY inputs (Fiber Optic, Digital coax, and RCA inputs on the front), MANY outputs, many optional features, on-screen display, multi-room capabilities.

Weakness:

The manual is a little hard to read, but who needs a manual anyway!

This is a great high current receiver! It puts out plenty of power and has many great features. I tried 5 other comparable receivers and this one is by far the best as far as features, cosmetics, and price. If you just do a little comparison shopping you'll be able to find it at a good price. I bought it at http://www.sounddistributors.com/ for $675 as compared to Circuit City's price of $900.
