I got this amp/receiver for FREE!! The parents of a friend of mine gave it to him for a garage stereo. He doesn't have a garage, so he gave it to me. Well, since I had lusted after these while I was in highschool, it became my home stereo unit. I have a h/k CD changer hooked to it as well as the 60" and the Blu-ray. I had to go to Radio Shack to get a digital to analog converter, but it works great. Infinity column speakers with integrated subs and Jensen satellite speakers round out the 5.1 surround. This thing WAILS! I'm currently researching turntables to hook to it so I can listen to my meager, yet growing vinyl collection through the stereo instead of the standalone unit I have for vinyl at this time. If you can find one of these in good condition, don't hesitate. It is an AMAZING unit. Well worth the wait from highschool.

I have a Marantz Receiver, a Pioneer Reciver, a Kenwood Reciver and the Harmon Kardon AVR 70. The AVR 70 is the best receiver by far.! I paid $45 froma thrift store and it was in excellent condition. I applied a little elbow grease and polish to it. It now looks like new once again. As for the sound - FANTASTIC! It rocks and plays better than my other newer receivers. It is crips and clear. The volume knob can be a bit tricky though, especially when turning it up. Can't complain - it is a very very good receiver and makes my (2) pair of JBL Studio Monitors thunder. I is great for any type of music. I have recently began listening to new age and dance music. This receiver has no progblem making the new format music (Digital) sound absolutely awesome. Haven't had a receiver like this in a long time. I use to by pass Hqarmon Kardon back in the 70's & 80's - What a Mistake that was! I like my Marantz 2270, but this unit sounds even better. I was going to resell it on ebay, however, after listening to it - it isn't going now where!

Strength:

crystal clear sound throughout

Weakness:

remote control

I got lucky finding this unit in 1997 while shopping for a television at Circuit City. I happened to be near the home audio section and heard a dismayed customer explaining that he needed to return the H/K because he had a Kenwood C/D player and wanted his audio components to match. Lucky me! Considering that the unit was retailing for nearly $900 at the time I couldn't say no. This unit by far has the richest and fullest sound of any receiver I have owned. It amazes me how other companies list their receivers at much higher power ratings yet they can't lay a finger on the smooth clear power the AVR delivers. Goes to show you that wattage measurements are just not the same from brand to brand. My only complaint with the unit is the awful remote control, but considering that that is all I have as a gripe, I think I did pretty well. I have just upgraded to the AVR525 (had to have the digital) but am looking forward to using this unit in the basement for my second system. Not a bad 1-2 punch!

Strength:

Power. Sleek looks.

Weakness:

Remote wasn't that great but Harman Kardon always has funky remotes. Wouldnt keep me from buying another one. :)

I was super happy with this purchase. This unit has tons of power and worked great for movies and music. I recently upgraded to the AVR 7000 to gain Dolby digital.

Strength:

Very good sound and stereo image

Weakness:

Too bad it didnt have Dolby Digital or I would never have to upgrade !

I have used this receiver for over 5 years now. It simply rocks. I bought it as a refurbished product on UBID and I can safely say that it was the sweetest deal I could have had at that time. It is still in great condition and I use it only for stereo sound nowdays. I have it paired with a HK FL 8300 CD player and the sound is crystal clear.

Strength:

Crystal clear highs and sufficient lows. It easily powers a set of vintage Dahlquist AudioPhile speakers as well as all the surrounds and center and all that jazz. I have been nothing but impressed since I purchased this a few years ago. I was skeptical in buying this unit, but will never again buy anything without Harman/Kardon''s tag on it. Has undoubtedly been the best receiver I have ever owned.

Weakness:

A weird crackling sound when adjusting the volume. Not too noticable. Remote can be complicated until you get used to it.

Well, if you are looking for the best the money can buy, I would HIGHLY recommend this unit. Has been the center of my joy since purchasing it in 1999.

Strength:

Clear Clean Sound

Weakness:

It is hard to return defective products to Harmand & uBid.

I bought an older unsed 1996 model.
I was very happy to get this at the price I paid, but I was soon dismayed by the defects. The Subwoofer preout nor any of the video inputs work. Still, at less than $200 I was happy to have it as a stereo receiver. After the 90 day warranty ran out the amplifier lost about 50% of its power.
It has very good clean, clear sound and had all the volume one could want at first.
A great receiver is not so great if it only last 90 days.

Strength:

Very clean sound even at very high volumes. Runs very cool when watching movies.

Weakness:

Not future ready. Only has Prologic

This receiver lacks dobly digital, but this is a 1996 model. Back then not too many receivers had that. If they did they were very expensive. This is a great receiver it is powerful and clean. I'm powering 250 watt speakers and it has no problem with then even at very high volumes. This receiver doesn't even get hot when playing movies so loud that you can't hear yourself. It does get warm playing music but i'm talking about playing it with the volume almost all the way up. This is a great receiver considering the year that it was made. If you can find one and you want to buy it just don't listen to that idiot you paid $130 for it and gave it a one star. People if you are going to review something please buy it new or in good conditions. This receiver would have excellent reviews if it wasn't for that idiot. This is a excellent receiver I give it five stars.

Strength:

Clean, clear and powerful sound.

Weakness:

Doesn't have the new Surround sound channels.

I got my HK-AVR70 about 2 years ago for around $500. I thought it was a good price for the equipment considering it's retail and went ahead and purchased it as my second system. My primary system has Klipsch Forte speakers, Lexicon Preamp, Acurus Amp, Nakamichi CD player, and other goodies. The HK sounds fantastic for it's price. I listened to it in a controlled enviroment when compared to other market competitors such as a Marantz (really the same thing as a HK), Onkyo, Yamaha, and Denon. The HK was smoother, and stronger through the bass than any other. The mids were clear and the highs were bright. It was a better sound to my ears.
I only have one complaint. If the volume is adjusted while listening to music, you can hear a crack of the electric motor every now and again. But, since the volume stays around the same place, I've rarely experienced this, and I'm too busy/lazy to get it looked at.
Sounds great. Great price. VERY sturdy construction. I've played it at -5Hz for 20 min, and never had it even think about complaining. A great integrated receiver. I would recommed it.
