I ordered the JVC RX-1028 Receiver from One Call ( $585.00 + shipping, Don't pay list price!) last Tuesday and received it on last Thursday. so far I'm pretty happy. The sound is GREAT!
My equipment:

JVC RX-1028VBK Receiver
JVC XL-MC334-BK 200 CD Player
JVC 701 DVD Player
JVC HiFI VHS VCR
Bose Acoustimass AM 7 speakers front
Bose Acoustimass AM 3 speaker back
Infinity BU-120 Subwoofer
GE 35" Color TV
Technics 575 Cassette player/recorder
Technics Turn table
Bellsouth wireless digital cable box.

Pros:

+ The front panel controls are user friendly.

+ Excellent sound music, and movies. Not lacking any power! 130 watts stereo, 100 watts surround. Very clean sound.

+ I love the 3-band EQ. It's user adjustable.

+ Sound fields are adequate.

+ Level adjustments for all outputs

+ DD, and DTS are excellent.

+ 3 optical, and coaxial inputs

+ 4 SVideo outputs/inputs

+ front panel SVideo, and analog inputs

+ Excellent integration with other JVC products. (OSD is great, the level of integration with JVC 200 CD player is superb!)

+ Subwoofer, and speaker management is great.

+ Back-lite Remote control is adequate, but a learning remote would be nice.

+ Multi-room play suberb.

Cons:

- No optical, and coaxial output. This would be great for Min-Disk, or CD recording.

- Switching for video inputs. If you connect Svideo and one of your components is using composite video you have to either connect the composite video as well or buy a converter cable (cost around $100. it's still composite!). I connected the extra composite cable, it's cheaper and it works great.

- Remote control will not operate other manufactures CD, and tape players! I'll probably buy a good learning remote.

For the price and features I give it 5 stars! I'm glad I got this one!

I have been searching for a while now to purchasing a home theater system. Since the receiver is so important, I have done alot of research regarding the different receivers that are out there. I got this unit for about $600. For about $600 dollars, nothing beats this JVC RX-1028VBK. I simply has everything that you could ask for in a receiver...period. I has a load of features, along with plenty of input/output jacks for you to hook up everything with. It's only flaw is that it doesn't have any digital outputs. The quality of the video and sound will blow you away. I listened to the higher-end products like the Harman-Kardon and the Oynko, and the video and music quality is very comparable. But the higher end models were in the $1200 dollar range. This unit also has a very stylish design too. Trust me guys, this is the perfect receiver for under $1000. There are probably better units out there, but expect to be paying up to $2000.

I had this receiver for over a week now. Well, I'm impressed. Without getting into it. It just sounds and operates great in every area. Did lots of looking and dealing on the web to find the best receiver and price. This the receiver that beat them all in the price range.I also got a great deal at JVC wholesaler on the web Called "opportunityknocking." Great quick service. Very friendily.Cheapest price I could find. Thanks Paul. 10 thumbs up.

The sound quality of this unit is great. The only problem that I've had with it is that I've had to have the Amp replaced twice.

I just got the 1028 last week, sounded ok until I turned the volume up. there is a hiss and it is very noticeable. I really like this receive because of all the inputs and outputs, but I can not put up with the hiss. I called jvc and they were no help. I tested a marantz with the same dvd and no hiss at any volume. I set up both these units in my den, side by side and just kept moving the connections back and forth.. I wanted to make sure... you can her the hiss at volumes past mid-level. for features I would give it a 5 but for sounda 2 sorry..

Just an update to my review below. I've had the receiver for almost two weeks now and I'm overall happy with the unit. There is a slight hiss, and I say slight if the volume is above 65-70. During a movie, you can't notice it, but if you turn the inputs off and crank the volume you can hear it. So ok, is does exist, but like I said when I'm using the thing I don't hear it, and the loudest I can stand is 60 in 5.1 mode and it's fine. The thing I dislike about the system now that I've used it for a while is the remote. It feels a little cheap and the RF barely works from the next room. So unless I got either a bum remote or a bum RF-IR receiver/transmitter, it's not the same RF as my Sony DSS has, let me tell you. Overall I've watched about 10 different DVD movies and a few on DTV in AC-3 and I'm liking it. But since the remote is a bit weak (it's nice, and back lit.. but too many buttons and short range RF), and the little hiss that is there, but you can't hear it unless you want to, I'll give this thing an overall rating of 4. It's got good features and it will keep me happy for the next two years, so that's all that matters.

I have been comparing recievers for a while now, and this JVC was one I was considering until I read all of these reviews. It seems that all agree that the JVC is a great value at $600 but really is not up to snuff for true hi-fi performance. The retail price of $900 would indicate the JVC is in the class of the Denon AVR 3300, but these reviews suggest that the system is feature rich but not quality rich. I would have bought this in college but now that I can afford a couple of hundred dollars more, I am guessing I would be unhappy with the JVC.

I have ranked this a 3 so as not to screw up the ratings.
