Strength:
DVD 5.1inputs; good number of other inputs; solid sound
Weakness:
no optical inputs; no decoder; I have used this for more than 3 years now, and I''ve found it to be a great value for the money. Tuner adequate for my needs. I use it with an MTX ps12 sub, and a pair of Pioneer 3-way speakers. As the center of my "home theater" it is versatile enough for my set up.While this may not be an "audiophile" set up, it sounds very good none the less. For the money, can''t be beat. Strength:
None that I know of except it has a decent tuner.
Weakness:
Weak amplifier section.Never ending volume control.Poor speaker terminals. JVC has in recent times been producing some good quality receivers. But with this one they are really pushing the limit of low budget A/V receivers. It is a glorified door stop and nothing more.Very poor amp cannot take a 4ohm load. The rack this came with while not the greatest is worthy of a much better head unit than this.If you see this one on the clearance rack at Sears walk away. You'd be better off with a plain old stereo receiver than this lame duck. NONE!!!!!!!
Weakness:
Oh Lord....... AVOID this steamin' pile of suck. JVC is pure garbage....it sucks even by "budget standards". Find anything better used in your classifieds. It would be better than buying this new at ANY price......WORTHLESS A/V receiver that will kill the whole "Home Theater" experience for the new guy. I'd give this a rating of "0" if I could. not enough bass, not enough power i went into the store around boxing day with my dad looking for a receiver and we happened to come across the JVC rx-588v. it was about $250 canadian and it was on sale so we decided to buy it. we brought it home and attached it to our TV and it was great becasue it was something new and it sure beats plain old TV sound. it was great for the time we had it on the TV. but later on we moved it downstairs to our theatre room in the basement and it sure did not beat my old fisher receiver that had great sound. the JVC just didn't have the power to handle 4 giant speakers. everytime we use all 4 speakers the bass just dies out making music less enjoyable. but when we use only 2 speakers it's great! the bass is full the treble is excellent but the problem is that i want all 4 speakers running at the same time! but it doesn't seem like the JVC can do it. so that's why i say that the rx-588V is great when you only have 2 speakers but if i could shop around again i would have spent more money to buy a receiver that can dish out the power. Does everything it says it claims.
Weakness:
Just not a high end amp/reciever. Tuner stinks. I own a JVC RX558V - not a VBK as listed. Not sure if there is really a difference. I bought mine about a year ago because I wanted a cheap entry into prologic and something DVD ready. I have it matched to a pair of Mirage OM-8s (yeah, I know, its like mixing a Ferrari with a Ford but I wanted something to tide me over during an extended upgrade period). I have to say, the sound is very good. The integrated subwoofer on the OM-8s probably goes easy on the JVC for driving the low end, but the combination sounds good for a wide range of music - rock, instrumental, classical, voice. Not the best I've ever heard, but I know that I need to pay a lot more money to make a significant improvement. So, for an inexpensive reciever, the RX 555V is a good value. Strength:
It sure is high power
Weakness:
Frequency response, weak tuner section, bad speaker terminals. I got this reciever last Christmas(1999). I saw the power rating, surround sound capability( with 5.1 input) and its price( it was on sale for $180) and decided to go for it. I have a pair of studio monitor speakers, goes by the name FANE and has an impedence of 16 ohms. The 558 is really good with these speakers but I can hear the lack of low frequencies. What more can I expect for a reciever whose freq starts at 40Hz? It does get heated up if I use other speakers like the Pioneer SP-570(book-shelf) with an imp of 8 ohms. When the speaker sensitivity is bad I tend to pump up the vol. and drive the amp to clipping!! But it sure is high power cos it blew off a 50W rms Kenwood book-shelf speaker that I ran on speakers B along with SP-570 as speaker A. The low freq response of Technics SA-EX110 is much better than the JVC(both are rated 100W rms @ 40Hz-20kHz). The tuner section is bad. I have used the Siemens RH-777 tuner and it was superior compared to 558( I used to be a DXer, but not anymore). The speaker connectors are bad too. But, I sure think it is not that bad for what it costs!! Similar Products Used: Technics SA-EX110, Kenwood, Sony TA-AX44 |

Weakness:
No DD decoder, gets very hot!!, overloads some times, poor Pro-logic decoder, stupid surround modes, and lots more bad stuff! I am only 16 years old but if i coudl go back in time i would of gotten a better reciver then this one it sucks!! ok ok i think you get the point but if you are looking for somthing with a good stereo mode thats about all this things got. but i mean if you bought this thing you are looking for a cheep peace of crap anyway. after buying this i will never buy any JVC-ppop agen!!!
