Strength:

dolby digital and dts for small price

Weakness:

power power power

Ok this receiver CANNOT be 100 watts per channel. I bought this thing from circuit city and hooked it up. Boy was I disappointed. I like to listen to audio fairly loud and this was not the receiver for me. You have to crank it practically 75 percent of the full volume to rumble the house. The sony 845 rocks the house at about 30 percent. Also the rear channels could barely be heard even when i pumped them up + 10. Stay clear of this one. Save your money and buy the sony 845 which i got for 249 open box at circuit city!!!!!

Strength:

Cost Features

Weakness:

Poor sound out of center channel Lack of bass

First let me say this most defiantly is 100w x5 receiver. When turned up it will wake the dead, and the cemetery is more than a mile from our house. Yes, the volume control has more range of adjustment than most, but that should not be confused with a lack of power.

As for the center channel I had the same problem as other’s here have mentioned, but Shawn’s work around solved the problem. It also lacks bass, at least with the main speakers I have, but the addition of a subwoofer took care of that.

For the money it is a nice buy and I’m happy with this purchase.

Strength:

Value for money, features, design. Excellent stereo, very loud and clear.

Weakness:

Poor sentre and surround clarity

This is a great Amp for its money, especially if you are running good speakers. But you must, oh so must put a 10amp 10 watt resister on the positive terminal for the centre speaker to clear it up, when that is done you'll be very impressed. So will your neighbours.

I'm running mine with a sub, and it hammers. Expensive cables are required though to get rid of the hiss.

Strength:

Nice dot-matrix display, S-video, 2 digital inputs, DTS

Weakness:

not enough real power output to speakers, sounds concentrated to one area (either center, or left right)

I'm a first time buyer. I wasn't very happy witht the sound output power. It states it has 100W X 5. but it sounded more like 60W X 5. I have to turn the volume very high 70% to hear anything. I'm thinking of trading in for Pioneer VSX-409.

Strength:

Nice display...not much else.

Weakness:

Loud hiss in 2 channel and Pro-Logic mode, center channel and rear channels sound very poor when watching DVD's, weak channel seperation, not 100Wx5 more like 60Wx5, DSP's sound the same, can only adjust sound level of center and rear speakers, front left and right speakers too dominant (even when center and rear channels are set to +10), sound is very tinny and isn't "expansive" enough (especially the center channel). I could continue to complain but I have a life...

I should've known that JVC is only good at making video products because there are some SEVERE problems with this reciever. Do yourself a favor, DON'T BUY JVC!!!! Go and get a Pioneer or a Kenwood. You'll be glad you did.

Strength:

Built-in decoders, cheap price!

Weakness:

remote control too basic

Good receiver for such low price. No complains whatsoever. However, I think Sherwood 8090 can reproduce better sound for about the same price. Too bad the Sherwood is UGLY! 4 stars for overall rating coz the sound quality could be better.

Strength:

Price, optical and coaxial digital inputs, S-VHS in and out

Weakness:

Could use more S-VHS inputs, remote

You cannot beat this reciever for the price. It includes both AC-3 and DTS decoders, 100 watts per channel and both optical and coaxial digital inputs. There are enough inputs for all of the goodies (CD, DVD, minidisc, tape, VCR.) However, more than one S-VHS input would have been nice and probably a couple more optical or coaxial digital inputs. The remote is basic and would could have been better if it was backlit and universal.

The sound is clear on all music types. I have tried all different types of music and the RX-6000 reproduces them perfectly. Sounds especially good in surround sound while viewing movies.

Overall, I am very satisfied with this product. This is a good receiver for those just entering the home theater market or for those who are casual listeners that don't need features that they will never use.

Strength:

Inexpensive. DD/DTS. Excellent florescent display. Toslink/Coax connections. Good A/V hookups.

Weakness:

Center channel amp problem? Mediocre remote.

This was almost the perfect A/V receiver for the money I was willing to spend. I got it for $167 new on ebay. Unfortunately, the center channel sounded poor - tinny, no dynamic range - basically dialog sounded pretty bad on most titles. I tried a variety of speakers to the same effect.

I thought it might be a defective unit but I went to a local shop and listened and the center channel sounded weak on that unit as well.

Onhis unit has an outstanding and large display. You can easily read it from across the room and shows a ton of information about the incoming signal and current settings. The overall design of it is excellent. Has hookups for everything I need including DBS/MD/DVD, etc. You can assign the digital inputs to most of the A/V buttons.

In the end, I returned it in favor of the Sherwood mentioned above. The Sherwood is not designed nearly as well but sounds much better through the center channel. And after all... I listen to the receiver far more than I look at it or plug stuff into it.

Strength:

First impression was good.

Weakness:

Center channel clips.

I bought the JVC DS-TP230 from CostCo. This includes the RX-6008V A/V receiver. Out of the box, I was impressed, but then again, I'm new at this. Well, I decided to try a better center channel speaker since this one seemed to be weak. First I tried the Bose center channel VCS-10. It sucked so much that I took it back the next day. Then I discovered audioreview.com and I started reading up on things *before* buying them. Well, I found a used Klipsch KSC-C1 for sale and I liked the reviews, so I bought it and tried it out. At first, I thought the guy sold me a bum speaker, since I could hear quite a bit of clipping as in square wave rather than sine wave. To check this, I swapped one of my main speakers to double check. Sure enough, it wasn't the center speaker, it was the center channel. Apparently, this unit, maybe just this specific unit does not do a good job at Dolby center channel generation. So I spent an hour and half boxing it back up and taking it back to CostCo after 34 days of use. (Nice return policy!) Overall, at higher level of play, the clipping was not that noticeable since the human ear smooths things out. But at softer levels it was VERY annoying using the Klipsch. Now I'm looking at moving up several notches to either a Denon or a Marantz.

Strength:

Dolby Digital AND DTS decoders, power, clarity, PRICE PRICE PRICE!

Weakness:

Center channel crossed over too high. Low current to center channel. Not available in titanium finish.

This review is a bit long but I hope you take the time t read it. It has IMPORTANT info on the center channel problem. First, I'd like to state that this is an EXCELLENT receiver for the price. You get all the features you need without a lot of the frills you don't. I have been looking for an AC3/DTS receiver to replace my aging ProLogic for a long time but I'm on a limited budget. The rx-6000 was perfect for me! It has compulink so it can control my old 5 disk changer and hx-pro tape deck (also have had for 7 years). I just wish JVC still made components with the titanium finish.

I've read some complaints about the center channel. I can tell you that through my experiments that I believe the power rails to the center channel amp has a very low current capacity. We all know (hopefully) that lowering the resistance (impedance) of a load in a circuit increases the current requirements. If you put a low impedance speaker on the center channel it WILL clip. I'm using 3 identical KLH 911B's for the front. They are rated @ 8 ohms from the factory, however I got the same clipping behavior (very slight but noticeable. So I went to Radio shack and bought a 10 ohm, 10 watt wirewound resistor (271-132) and placed it inline on the positive terminal of the center channel speaker (please use electrical tape on the connection!) The clipping disappeared. Of course I had to increase the center channel level slightly (from 0 to +2) but it sounds good. Remember, this is amp is rated @ 8-16 ohms. It's seems best to err on the side of high impedance.

On the downside, it appears that JVC cut off the center channel around 160 HZ (-6 dB). This frequency is WAY too high in my opinion. I measured this with subwoofer off, all front speakers set to large, and crossover frq set to 80. The same speakers on the L/R channels measure down to 80 Hz (-3 dB). I contacted JVC about this but haven't heard back from them yet. (Frequency response measured with RadioShack SPL meter (33-2055)on tripod and Sheffield/Coustic setup and test disc available @ amazon.com)
