Strength:
Very Powerful unit, functionability, banana connectors, features, DSP modes, display, workhorse, fully adressable digital inputs, digital output, svideo in's and outs, componenet video in and out
Weakness:
No illuminated remote, display is a bit confusing Well being the first reviewer on this receiver, I picked it up in J&R in NYC for $315....great unit have it hooked up to Klipsch Quintet and KS-12 sub also from Klipsch...The receiver is beautiful, not heavy, very POWERFUL, definately a workhorse...it says 110x5 it puts out just about that...works very well with my klipsch system. Strength:
Easy to use, on screen programming, one touch feature can be set-up easily so that all settings are stored for each source
Weakness:
Remote is very limited in function and has no light. You have to spin the volume either very quickly, or a whole bunch of turns to get the volume to change. This is an excellent unit though the remote isn't much help when it comes to cleaning up the coffe table. The number of connections possible on the back of the unit is amazing and all the speaker connections are with banana plugs. I have this unit hooked up to the new Polk RM6600 speakers with the SW-450 sub and I couldn't be happier. Similar Products Used: I purchsed a Sony 935 first, tried it, returned it when I grew tired of complexity. The JVC is layed out nice, the buttons are easy to remember and all the functions can be accessed even though I haven't referenced the manual in a few months. |

Strength:
Price, sound
Weakness:
No lit remote, remote does not work too well with 200 disk JVC cd player Best bang for the buck. I have never heard any hiss that has been mentioned about its predecessor (RV-888VBK). And, I really don't understand the gripe about loudness. I rarely turn mine up past 60 and full volume is much too much for me. Set up can be a little tricky at first, but becomes intuitive after a few uses. Menu options on TV are a reall nice touch. Similar Products Used: HK (old, old, old) |

Strength:
Good sound coming from the only front speakers it was powering. Great bass from my JBL J830M's. Good separation of mids and highs. Great value for all the features (S-video switching, High-current, DD & DTS, etc...)
Weakness:
Quality. First RX8000VBK, sub out did not work. Second RX8000VBK "OVERLOADED" and would not turn back on. I purchased my first RX8000VBK and the subwoofer output did not work but the front pair sounded great. I made sure the subwoofer option was turned "ON" and the woofer level turned up. Nothing. So I brought it back and exchanged it for the same model. Not even 5 seconds after turning it on, it shut off after flashing "OVERLOAD". I will admit that the speaker setting on the second receiver was set to 4-ohms when I was using 8-ohm, JBL J830M, speakers. So after discovering my error, I changed the switch to 8-ohms and unplugged the unit as instructed by the manual. I plugged it back in and it was dead. I even left it unplugged overnight and tried it again the next morning....dead. You would think that there would be some way the receiver would recover from this honest mistake...nope...there isn't. |

Strength:
Biggest bang for the buck. Multiple digital inputs, digital output (new for this year), banana plug compatible for all channels, upgradable with dvd multi input (5 channel input jacks), ease of use, great dolby digital reproduction.
Weakness:
Rear surround speakers in TV mode only. New front panel display a little confusing. Look, if you are looking for a Harmon Kardon, Onkyo or other top of the line amp - this may not be for you but if you are like the other 95% of the world, this is the best deal for the money. I've had 3 previous JVC receivers and have never had a problem. I traded up to achieve DTS sound and one listen to "Eagles-Hell Freezes Over" should convince anyone the upgrade is worth it. I recommend this receiver to anyone who wants to limit their cost to $500 or less. This amp is connected to a Sony DVD DVPS360. It also runs a tape deck and a mini disc as well as a Panasonic SuperVHS. Similar Products Used: JVC 884. |

Strength:
on screen display, digital/dts, price for features, many digital inputs, sounds good, looks cool, subwoofer output control
Weakness:
no dimmer on huge bright display, no ac plugs in back, runs pretty warm(almost too hot, but i have it in an ET center cabinet without much air circulation, are others having this problem?) and i guess the remote is a little hard to use for some things. Oh, and for some reason no sound plays from the rear speakers when in modes like hall, dance club, live, etc. Just sound out of the front speakers, if anyone else differs, let me know whats up. First off, I think the remote is very usefull when using the on-screen display, other words it is not that great. Once you assign a vcr to the remote, is there a way to change it? I tried to replace it with my dvd player so I could use the remote to operate my toshiba 1200 dvd player. I cant seem to get it working, menu and play buttons work but i cant turn it off and on. This is my first digital receiver and I must say that the sound while watching dvds is about 10 times better than i expected. I am considering putting it ontop of my ET center because it runs pretty warm compared to my onkyo. So far I really like this receiver and think I will get my use out of it(hopefully). I guess I really shouldnt complain, because I only paid $78 for it shipped after many and many amazon gift certificates. This seems like a very good product for the money, and I would recomend it to anyone considering it. Because basically, if you are considering it, then its probably becuase you cant afford much more and in this case you cant really get much more options for your money. But you could always trade options for better quality if you choose. Similar Products Used: Onkyo 424(I think) pro-logic receiver (GREAT SOUND), cheap sony pro-logic receiver, technics receivers |

5 Video In (4 with SVHS), Sounds really nice using DD or DTS soundtrack, On screen display, universal remote, nice display, one touch EQ
Weakness:
kinda Hard to have an optimum set up, user's manual sucks. This unit kick ass! After you're done with the set up (wiring and onscreen adjust , with by the way, takes a long long time to get right). Similar Products Used: JVC RX-507V(7years old) |

Strength:
None
Weakness:
Everything, from weak output to the crappy components to the terrible sound. Runs insanely hot. This is the worst investment that I have ever made. This is the weakest reciever on the market. When you actually open it up and look at the components you find faulty wiring, bottom of the line components and no efficient way to cool it down. After 10 days of use, it just stopped working. No overheating protection what so ever, it just died. I suggest that you stick with Sony, Yamaha, or H/K. Because this reciever will not last your more than a year. Tons of features, great sound, great looks...
Weakness:
No A/B switching for my cablebox, otherwise, NONE!! This receiver is the best value in town today (12/1/2000). I was looking for the center piece for my first home theater system. I researched for weeks, reading through hundreds of opinions and reviews. I narrowed it down to a few receivers based on performance, features, and what I wanted to spend (~$300). The final decision was between this receiver and the Sony STR-DE845 for $300. The JVC had every feature the Sony had, plus a few more. The selling point for me were the price ($275 including shipping) and the front panel audio/video connections. |
