I think this receiver is the schiznitz! $327.00 from UBID - I probably could've gotten it cheaper but it was my first visit into the online auction arena. I just couldn't stop bidding. Anyway, as for the receiver, I'm sure that receivers going for $2000 sound much better but I didn't have 2K to spend on A/V equipment. It hasn't overheated, popped, hissed or any of those things yet, but I guess when/if you read the instructions you might have better results?? Pat from Duluth brings up an interesting point that maybe some of the previous problems have been addressed in the newer receivers, but again, I have no clue. It seems to me that if you want to spend $350 for a cool Dolby Digital receiver then the JVC 884 should be your choice.
It has more inputs than I have toys, more settings than I have time and more power than I need! I suggest that you go to Circuit City and quiz one of those salespersons (you know, the ones that attack you as soon as you enter and then circle like sharks). Ask them to give you a demo on all of the overpriced crap they have and then when you're comfortable with something in your price range, hit the internet and find it $200 cheaper!! Just beware of the "50% restocking fee" places.
I'm going to give it "5 speakers/stars" because I really feel that it's underrated. I really don't think that you can get a better receiver for the price. I bought the JVC brand AGAIN, because out of all of the A/V equipment I've owned in the last 15 years, my only JVC product (the first CD player they ever produced) is still running. I just hope that this receiver lives to be half its age...

Strength:

looks good, great remote, lots of hookups in back

Weakness:

no seperate bass or treble, just some lame EQ settings

I have had unit for almost a year now and bought at a deeply dicounted open box price which I am very happy about. Overall I really like the unit. I don't really use it to listern to music as much as other, its primary intended use was for watching DVDs on my Toshida SD2109 (also very happy with). I like all the surround modes and do use them believe it or not. I just wish it had seperate BASS and TREBLE controls and not the LAME "SEA" EQ with only three frequency ranges to set. And other than that, I think the Digital sound quality is excellent and the on screen menus are pretty cool too!
