Strength:

Price vs. features

Weakness:

Haven't really found any. Can't hear that hum at all at volume levels that would wake the neighbors.

Just wanted to mention that I have the hum everyone mentions, but you can't hear it until you've turned the unit up to about 75, which is loud enough to break windows...

However, someone earlier mentioned a "loose" wire in their unit, and my curiosity and engineering background got the better of me. I took my unit apart and checked out the story.

DO NOT attempt this fix! All it will do is waste your time. The wire mentioned does not even exist. The most probably explanation is the coax ground loop, for which a fix is given by Michael earlier.

Sony STR-DA50ES: Had it for two weeks and took it back. Found the sound from the JVC to be as good or better at 1/3 the price.

Well worth every penny I spent. I am very pleased with the JVC RX-888VBK A/V receiver. This receiver does everything I need it to do and more. If you are on a tight budget like I am, I strongly recommend this receiver. Sure, there are many other receivers on the market that may deliver higher quality in some areas. But, for A/V receivers in this price range, none compare to the RX-888VBK.
The JVC RX-888VBK delivers all the power I need. Since I live in an apartment, I have to be "respectful" of those living around me. Although some see the volume control as a weakness, I see it has a major strength. I can fine tune the volume to my liking and it is great for listening to CD's at night. Granted it takes increasing the volume to about 55 on the volume control when listening to DVD's, but I don't see or hear any need for me to increase it past that number. I also like the ability to increase the center, left surround, and right surround speakers individually in surround sound mode. If you initially feel as though you are not hearing enough sound out of the surround speakers or the center channel speaker, all you have to do is hit a few buttons and the volume increases. Also, with the center channel speaker, you can change the tone level you want (Soft 1 - Soft 2 - Flat - Sharp 1 - Sharp 2).
Since I own all JVC components, it makes switching between sources a breeze. JVC's on-screen display is a major plus.
Overall, I have only a few minor issues with this receiver. The hook-up and fine tuning can be difficult, because of the poorly written manual. Also, if you listen to local FM radio broadcasts, like I do, I would consider purchasing a more powerful FM antenna.
