Strength:

Sounds good.

Weakness:

Designed by kindergartners.

Incredibly poor design! Why would anyone make an S-Video machine with VCR-2 input limited to composite video? Especially when use of that composite means no S-Video at all. But it still has 4 S-Video inputs so I can live with it, given the price.
The remote is terrible. Just a small example: there is one button for ON another button for OFF. (Off/on toggle switches have worn well over the years.) I guess JVC engineers don't sweat the small stuff.
A number of reviews here have complained of OVERLOAD, make sure your speakers are at leats 8 Ohms.

Strength:

Lots of features, dts and dd decoding, svideo switching...

Weakness:

HHHIIISSSSSS!!!

Got this receiver last week. The hiss problem in the rear speakers (and front/center) is real.

Had this one drive my Cerwin Vegas speakers and was really disapointed... Don't get me wrong : this receiver is good but the hiss problem is too annoying...

Finally got it back and got a Harman Kardon AVR100 for the same price...

Strength:

Features, features, features... and a great price

Weakness:

Manual sucks, and remote only works JVC audio equipment.. Irritating since I have a Pioneer CD player

Good job on receiver. It has a lot of functionality for the money you spend for it. Does tend to get a bit warm so make sure to give it ample space with a cool area. I had problems with the manual when trying to set up surround sound speakers. I eventually fumbled my way to the right settings. But what can you expect for 359 bones...

Weakness:

Poor manual

I have to laugh when I read some of the negative review. The first thing one wants to do when you get this system is to hook up your components, turn it on, and be immersed in surround sound. This is not going to happen, especially if you hook up components using digital connections. You really need to read the manual on this product, otherwise, problems with surround sound, hissing, and some of the other complaints people have mentioned will happen. It took me several nights of reading the manual to get this unit configured correctly but once configuration was done, look out the sound is incredible! I have no hissing, and my surround sound speakers work fine even when cranked up.

Unfortunately, even though I recommend you read the manual thoroughly, it is poorly written, and you will mostly likely have to read it several times before understanding everything.

Strength:

Lots of features good sound in stereo mode and good bass output thru pre out.

Weakness:

Awful surround!!! Rear speakers rarely made a peep, i changed all settings and played and played to no satisfaction.

I was pretty pumped when i got it from crutchfield for $399(yes you can find it cheaper but i prefer service over price) The previous receiver i had(technics) was pretty good in surround mode but didn't seem to put out much power and bass was horrid. The JVC product provides good sound for 2 channel stereo but I think most folks are buying home theater dd/dts receivers for.....well let me guess.... home theater 5.1 surround????? Hello JVC!!!You figure it out. I defintely would stay away from this receiver. For the same price from Onecall.com you can get the Yamaha htr5150 for 392+shipping and according to reviews on this site it kicks ass!!! Unfortunately they were out of stock so due to my impatience i spent and extra $80 and ordered it from crutchfield which if needs to be returned does not charge a restocking fee(onecall 15% and you pay return shipping and warranty coverage is questionable at best) and free return shipping. I gave JVC 2 stars because it provides excellent 2 channel clean sound but this receiver got no more because it basically doesn't do what it basically is designed to do....quality surround sound(pro-logic sucks too).

Weakness:

Manual(READ IT MANY TIMES, IT PAYS BACK - YOU WILL BE HAPPY WITH RECEIVER)

I hooked it up and was amazed(spent 3 hours prior reading manual). DD and DTS are great. 4 SVideo Inputs, 3 Digital .... Just get it and enjoy.
About hissing problem(well I don't have because I read manuals first and then enjoy music and movies).
Good Luck.

Strength:

Price, Sound, Looks, Inputs

Weakness:

Complicated manual and remote

For $329 this is a very solid unit.

I haven't had any of the hissing or sound problems from my subwoofer or rear speakers. You need to make sure you select the correct speaker size to use the subwoofer correctly. I really like the feature where you can increase or decrease the sound from the sub, rears, and center speakers. I only use this however when my wife complains about the sub being to loud.

I did have a problem were I wasn't getting 5.1 sound when playing DVDs. But that was corrected when I found that My DVD player(JVC 555bk)was preset for PCM sound. I changed that to Dolby Digital and all was well.

The manual was slightly complicated and I had to read through parts a couple of times to get things right.

I will give this a 5 star rating because my wife thinks it is too loud and I love the Dolby Digital 5.1.

Strength:

Great features, good sound.

Weakness:

Manual, radio reception.

Great bang for the buck! I got it for under $350 shipped.
My first AC3 setup, but my friend that has a nice setup was impressed with the JVC. I got 2 150W fronts (Wharfedale valdus 500), decent center and a decent sub. Rears are not hooked up yet.

Anyway, I am happy with the 888, very nice, no hiss problems, good sound. I will see how the rear speakers will act soon. If you like to mess with electronics and like stuff with lots of features get this.
