Strength:
Plenty of features, incredible price
Weakness:
Doesn't come with picture book for the simpltons who don't know how to set up a ht system, get a clue. Excellent receiver, especially for the money. I run mine through a pair of JBL professional 25's and the sound is amazing. 45db is more than enough for casual listening in a 20 x 17 room. I don't use it to cause a hearing impairment like some of these reviewers are talking about (75+). Anyway ecost.com @ 339.95 + free shipping hurry on over for the Christmas season. Next buy a dvd/cd player. Run your dts cds/dvds through it. Bask in the wonderful sounds. If your system overloads learn how to set it up properly. With half a brain you can enjoy endless amounts of music and movies, I know I have. Similar Products Used: Harmon Kardon av65 |

Unknown I've just read all the reviews b/c I'm considering to buy this receiver. For those who complain about its noticeable "hiss"/"hum" as well as its volume problem, I think they should think twice before giving this JVC unit one-star rating. |

I just got mine last week and it sounds terrific. There's plenty of headroom, with a volume of 60-65 being enough to shake the room. There is no hiss at all. I cranked the volume and listened to all speakers and it was quieter than a mouse. Personally, it's a great product. If you have concerns about the issues mentioned in these reviews, buy from a place with a good return policy. |

DTS Support and On screen menu I had the 884 took it back to get a reciever with dts support I got the 888 and noticed a big difference. I thas a lot clearer sound and more defined than the 884 I give the 884 4 stars and the 888 Five. For the money you can beat the qaulity of it plus has 3 digital inputs which Harmon Kardon 85 only has 2. I think it is a great product and well worth the money Similar Products Used: The JVC 884 |

Strength:
Reliability. All of things you need in this unit DD, DTS etc
Weakness:
Lack of bass Never had a problem with this unit. All things I need it to do were done very well. With the price I payed, I think it's a very good deal. The combination, with others units also is primordial like speakers, DVD player etc... Similar Products Used: Sony,Sherwood |

A very good receiver for the money ($380). The amplifier section is lacking at higher outputs - noticeable bass distortion at 70 volume (0~100) driving a pair of Mirage FRX7's. Demos of the speakers in store w/Yamaha and HK receivers were able to reach much higher levels cleanly. Surround sound mode is worse. Sonic detail somewhat lacking. DSP modes are junk - rarely worth using in any case. FM tuner is adequate, likes strong signals. D-Digital decoding sounds great. Binding posts for all speaker outputs. Decent remote. Nice set of digital inputs. I think I will trade it in for a Yamaha RX-V995 ($800) as my muscial tastes find it somewhat lacking. Fine for home theatre though. |

I purchased this receiver at Circuit City for $479.99. Featurewise this is a great av receiver. It has s-video inputs, Dolby Digital, DTS, and banna plug compatilble speaker terminals. Unofortunately, the performance does not live up to the features. Although the sound quality of the Dolby Digital and DTS are repesctable, I had to crank the volume to a minimum of 85% of the maximum output to get even halfway decent surround sound. The 888 sounded ok for two channel stereo, but the tuner sounded tinny and didn't tune in stations very well. If you own JVC components, you might want to check it out, if not do what I did, go for the new Sony STR-DE 935 reciever when it comes out-they'll have s-video inputs, DTS, and Dolby Digital. I now have a Sony STR-DE 825 and it blows the jvc out of the water in Dolby Digital and regualr stereo modes |

I have been a JVC product owner for several years and having purchased my third receivers, I find that JVC's technician analysis of their receivers RMS-Speaker rating is inaccurate. A 100watts per channel actually equates to about 70watts. Please note other Audio magazine's reference to this measurement. With that said, JVC's design of this reciever (RX-888V) is for the money a great buy, a good performer. Improvements in Bass Management, Spatial Surround Settings and a well thoughtout remote (except; No more "One Touch" Audio-Memory Button) are excellent. A back-lite remote (offered on the RX-1028V) would of been cool. Along with 5.1 inputs (For Future SACD or DVD-Audio) their is a S-Video output to your TV/Monitor with a On-Screen-Display (OSD) that is fairly easy to scroll through when wanting to set any of this reciever's A/V settings. |
