From bad to good

Upon receipt it took about 2 hours to setup. Granted this included running new speaker wire, dismantling the old system, and fighting with a 1" inch hole to shove 2" worth of wires through. After all this I was disappointed because the center channel sound was distorted and voices were inaudible. Come to find out, the center channel amp was bad (one bad thing with seperate amps per channel--more parts that could go bad). The people at JVC were great about honoring the warranty and fixing it free of charge but their 7-10 business day turnaround slowly turned into 20-30 days.

Since they returned the receiver to me, it has worked superbly. The "one-touch" operation is an excellent function because it saves each mode's (DVD, DBS, VCR, TV, FM, CD...etc) last volume and configuration settings. This is important because each input requires a different volume setting to be comfortably audible (nothing is more annoying that having the radio turned up and then switching to TV mode and your ears start to bleed).

One note to anyone interested in purchasing the unit: buy good speakers. When I started I had Technics cubes hooked up as rear and center channels. Since then, I replaced these speakers with Klipsch (also from Ubid...Ubid is an authorized reseller of Klipsch speakers so any warranty concerns will be honored by Klipsch) and it has made a world of difference.

If you aren't going to use the multiroom function, think about buying the 8000 or 7000vbk. But if you might use this function, this receiver is a great machine for the price range.

I purchased this item from ubid for $250. Great bargain if only it would work. Like another person who purchased the amplifier from ubid I can't get the center, rear speakers to work. JVC are repairing at the moment (very easy transaction) What I did get to work was great. Fairly easy setup, good sound from front speakers. Nearly fainted when I won the auction for such a low price. Will write another review when I get it back.
Could anyone email and tell me if the center, rear speakers should just play without being selected. I can get the front 1 and 2 to play, main and sub but no center, rear.
Thanks.

Strength:

digital optical inputs, great deal, good remote

Weakness:

none yet

This is the first time I've shelled out anything serious for a receiver. I saw rave reviews of this on amazon, and their price was $500. I put it in my cart, walked away, came back, and they had raised the price. I'll never buy there again. After looking at these reviews, I tried the web, finally found it for $500 from a plus digital, they delivered it just fine.

I am still in awe of what I have been missing in the music all this time. Paired with Paradigm Monitor 9 fronts, and a sony CD player, will get the other speakers later. A cool effect is it's ability to take in TV sound, and split it up into a "surround" effect, even if you have only two speakers. Totally cool. Love the settings to put your music into a club or concert hall, tried this tonight with steely dan and it was WEIRD it worked so well.

optical inputs work well, the manual explains it fine. The remote controls my quasar vcr and panasonic tv just fine as well. Haven't tried the compulink to the sony cd to see if it would work with their system (?).

The sub room feature works great too, as does the one touch operation, which holds settings for the individual sources. This is particularly good for me, since the volume that I need to hear the TV through it is twice that of the CD player, a problem with my TV.

Go ahead, support the economy and drop the change. You won't regret it.

Strength:

Sound quality, both rf and if remote for multiroom/multisource, compulink, more a/v inputs than a TV station!

Weakness:

Somewhat complex to setup for a neophyte like myself, harder to program my Pronto, because of the rf remote

Okay, get out the Daytimer and block out a few hours, just to get READY to set this thing up. I cracked the manual, and saw that I might have to call a friend over to help think this out. But it wasn't as hard as I thought, once I got started.

I was used to double-switching my DVD, VCR, Tivo and my ReplayTV through a Sima switch, bypassing the receiver completely. So, now my life is considerably easier, thanks to all the s-vid inputs.

My JVC 200CD changer is so happy that it can finally talk to something else, the compulink worked perfectly.

I was used to onscreen setup from the Tosh DVD, but the customization possiblities is unbelievable. I spent the next week playing with everything, to my wife's disgust.

Klipsch fronts, BIC center. Beautiful, beautiful sound. Tears in my eyes. Eagles DVD was unlike anything I've ever experienced.

You'll be pleased.
