VR-407 .... hmm... As many others state in their reviews, I too have bought the full home theatre in a box deal. Being a basshead and an audiophile, this package seemed natural for me. The only thing I had a problem with at first was that the powered sub (10") was not enough for me. So I sold it right away. My roommate at the time was more than hapy to buy it from me since he has the same package and he too thought it didn't have enough punch.
For me to have the bass that I wanted to go with this system was a problem when it came to space in my bedroom. I had six 10" Kenwood home speaker replacement subs and an old PA amp that I wanted to use. To power these subs was no problem, I simply used the sub pre-out to my PA amp. After some thought I found a place where I could fit a box large enough for six 10's... UNDER MY WATER BED! Problem fixed. I own an old water bed with a normal mattress in it now. All I had to do is reconstruct the underside half of my bed into a sub box. It works great! Sounds great too!

Now that I have all this bass that my heart had desired, it was time to try out my new receiver and speakers with it. Even though the speakers had drownd out my powered sub, I was still worried that they wouldn't be able to match the beast that I had created under my bed!

They DID! And without even coming close to distorting. Sounds like I have a dance club in my little room now!
I was so proud of this stereo setup at the time that I borrowed my buddies web cam for a day. Check out my bed at

Some friends tell me that I have way too much time on my hands and others kinda praise me for having the only bed in Southwestern Ontario that bounces and vibrates without having to put a quarter into it.

As for the rest of my review on the VR-407, I have to say that for the price, it kicks ass in many aspects. The DTS rocks, stereo mode sounds killer and even my Mp3z fed through my Yamaha AW744 Pro sound card with fibre optic and four channel analog outputs, sound awesome.

Strength:

PRICE, Power (100x5), Svideo Switching, # Of Inputs, DTS/DD, Banana Plug Capable speaker outputs.

Weakness:

No Pre-set DSP modes. No Onscreen-display. No DD/DTS Tone Controls. Manuals.

This reciever was such a great deal! This is the 2nd lowest price of this reciever I've seen ($299.00 clearance at Fry's Electronics, but I do not live in USA). It has so many Inputs and outputs!!! Highly Upgradeable. FOUR Digital inputs (2 DigiCoax, 2 Optical). 5 Svideo inputs!!! Svideo Switching!!! 500Watts of power is plenty. Relatively easy to use. If you are a beginner or a intermediate Audio Enthusiast, with not a lot of money to spend, this is the one. Use the money you save and rack up a couple of DTS DVDs!!! The DTS/DD is great. The FM radio in stereo mode with BassBoost sounds like an MP3 if not BETTER! Super Clear. Many different modes, Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro-Logic, 3-Stereo, Stereo, and Downmix. The remote is FINE!!! I think the remote is a good one, not to cluttered, but provides many functions, although they missed a DIMMER button. The back panel is marked very clearly. Very easy to hookup. The audio quality is very good for this price.

One of my peeves about this is no on-screen display. I sit about 7 feet away from the reciever, and viewing the 2CM dot matrix text on the reciever is pretty hard. There are no preset DSP modes, or memory for previous audio settings for different types of DVDs. There are no Tone Controls (Bass/Treble) for DD/DTS, but many recievers dont have this function, so thats okay. The manual is for about 8 different recievers Kinda complicated to understand.

Strength:

Good selection of hookups, well made receiver

Weakness:

Remote could be better

I paid 145+shipping from ubid for this receiver. I was really blown away by all the features this receiver has for the price I paid. I currently have it hooked up to Wharfedale MFM-7 speakers, it does a fine job of powering these speakers, and the sound is really good even at high volumes. This receiver is great for Home theatre or as just a stereo receiver. Bottom line, I recommend buying this receiver, especially if you are on a buget like I am. I guarantee you that you will not find a better receiver with as many features for this price.

Strength:

DTS decoding, price

Weakness:

Remote is pretty weak

This receiver does a great job for the money. It takes time to get it configured properly, you should plan to tweak it over a few days until you get the sound just right. Once you do, it really rocks!
The DTS decoding is awesome. I watched Gladiator in DTS and couldn't believe the sound. Get this receiver if you want a solid home theater setup but don't want to spend a fortune. I've got it hooked up to HTD level one speakers, and I couldn't imagine anything coming close in value (the whole setup cost me less than $350!)
It does a pretty good job in plain stereo too. Mine's a refurb from Ubid, i've had it for about a month and it's been great so far. Definitely far better than I imagined for the price I paid.

Strength:

cheap price

Weakness:

remote control

Just purchased this from Ubid. Remote control did not work when received. Ubid may be cheap but what does that matter when product does not work. They want me to send back whole package instead of trying new remote, plus I have to pay for shipping. What a crock. Speakers I ordered also came in damaged. Looks like they were dropped, corner was smashed! What a deal. These receivers are being discontinued, you can get a brand new one for $250. Receiver sounds great though, but not much use without remote. 1 star is for Ubid. I will send this back and buy another from local retailer, lesson learned.
