Strength:

Wonderful detail Excellent soundstage

Weakness:

None

This receiver really sings with the right CD player. I love the number of inputs and the flexibility that it allows. For the price, it has everything that I could want in a receiver. While it may not have the number of DSP modes as an equivalent Yamaha or Denon, to me that was was of minimal concern. It was the quality of the sound that mattered most. The biggest strenght of this receiver is the quality of the sound it delivers to the center channel and the presence of the soundstage. The rest of my equipment is Yamaha 5 disc CD changer B&W DM 601 S3 B&W ASW 300 Mission M7C1 Energy EXL 1.15 Cables are Straightwire Chorus 2 Monster 12 gauge speaker wire

Strength:

Midrange, Bass and Highs. Build quality and 3 year warranty. It's the total package.

Weakness:

Remote if anything. Can't think of anything else.

Wow!!! I'm very impressed. I had heard about Marantz before but never listened to their products and really wasn't expecting this kind of quality sound since I had been so unimpressed with the others I demoed at home. I have done extensive demos at my house with the Onkyo SR600, HK 225 and Various Denon models but none have impressed me as much as this little receiver and found myself returning them all within 30 days. This receiver has excellent Midrange as well as Highs. Detail is the best yet. The receiver has a tight controlled grip on the bass which is very clean and deep. It took 2-3 weeks to burn-in and open up. I played it for 10 to 12 hours everyday and left the unit on constantly. The other receivers that I demoed previously had the same 30 day, 10 to 12 day burn-in. After doing the proper setup and adjusting the speaker output level on the receiver to suit my large room I could not be happier. If music really matters, as Marantz says, this is the one to get. It truly is better than I could have imagined it would be. I LOVE IT!!!!

Strength:

Incredible audio. Detailed music. suppleness in sound. Proper channel separation. Excellent Radio reception. FM Radio never sounded more lively. My room got converted into this three dimensional stage whre the intruments are placed. Though I consider myseld helplessly becoming an audiophile, I have curbed my desire for electrostatic speakers and tube amplifiers for timebeing. The Auto mode selects between sources(PCM,DolbyD, DTS, DPrologicII, etc. seamlessly) My fauvorite for music is 5 Channel stereo. PCM is good when connected to higher end speakers like B&W and other highend floor standers.Video switching is good. all in all one of the best receivers out there. Stands alonside, and even beats some very other expensive AVRs!

Weakness:

None at this price range. It lacks component video switching. It is only 5 channels. Even if I bought it brand new it would still cost me less than £500 which makes it incredible value. Actually I would like to say on record that budding audiophiles will be happy at what they get with this Marantz AVR. Soft expansive treble and bass means it appeals to a seasoned listener more than newcomers to amplifier setups.

I got the Marantz along with an LCD projector. So as you might guess I set up a full fledged home theatre with five speakers from Eltax, and DVD player from sony and digital connection between my DVD and Marantz. Digital connection again between my computer and marantz. At first I felt I had the worst speaklers in the world. I knew the spk.connections were askew and out of phase when I first bought it from a friend. So I spent a whole day setting things up. I placed the speakers on the foor and fron a bit ahead of the corners and centre speaker falt on the wall(where I project the picture) and the rear channels in the back corners of the room. I used a large garage speaker for sub(leave it turned off, because it is far from perfect). Suddenly everything came alive. My 5-foot wide movie screen seemed to match the incredible audio of this AVR. Voices were crisp, clear, even the faint nervousness of new actors doing one lineers were brought into full limelight!! Minutest details are revealed. This is one AVR ready for any cone and hybrid speakers. I like it. In fact, I like it very much. I thought about it a lot. I give it 5 stars.

Strength:

Very sweet natural sound for a transistor amp, let alone an AV type, in this price category. Good high current amp that is capable of driving European speakers well. Unlike all other AV equipment in this price range the Marantz is aimed at being a musical product and bringing music into home cinema. With all good high current amps there is no distortion at high sound levels, I feel the amp is conservatively rated at 70Watts.

Weakness:

None for the asking price.

With my previous stereo amp on the out I was looking for an AV amp without that traditional 'Japanese' sound, all treble and bass and no midrange. It also had to be a high current amp to drive my Spendor SP2's. The SR-4200 was easily the most pleasing to listen to, having a nice rounded vocal capability and breathing some life into my Spendors again. The high current amp is adequatelly capable of driving odd impedence and low efficiency speakers with a sweet sound. It makes anything in it's price range sound like a boom box. Forget Sony, Yamaha, Onkyo, Harman Kardon, Denon or any of the others, they are all full of treble and bass only. The Marantz gives you midrange and this is what really counts with voice, and the excellent rounding on voice makes it perfect for music as well as AV. It's musicality means clear instrument and voice locality/identification and this add vastly to the placement in surround modes. If you don't believe me try this. Get any competitor on some decent European speakers and give it only centre speaker feeds and listen to the sound. Only the Marantz will leave you thinking there was a person speaking to you, not the TV. Next give everything but the centre and listen to the music and surround tracks, everything is beautifully placed and identifiable. In addition the headphone output is also excellent quality. It offers no fancy DSP emulation, just plain stereo, but the signal is so clean and unpoluted and it carries through the natural sound that it will add life to your headphone listening pleasure. My Sennheisers love it. All in all a unit you can listen to for hours on end. The natural sound means your ears are not fatigued, like in most other amps of similar price. Only my old Cambridge amp (god rest it's soul) drove my Spendors better. After listening to the first few AV amps I became despondent but upon hearing the Marantz I was pleasantly surprised.

Strength:

VALUE/PERFORMANCE for the $$$ Auto surround mode GREAT SOUND Solid construction

Weakness:

None I can think of in a unit at this price (but no inputs for multichannel DVD-Audio, not really a big concern given it's price, I think the new SR-4300 has these)

Purchased the SR-4200 to replace my old Marantz SR-73 Dolby Pro Logic receiver. As usual, the unit is excellent at both movies and music. Particularly like the Auto surround/stereo mode function. Just pop in a CD/DVD (select surround setup in DVD first)into my DVD player and the receiver automatically switches to the appropriate surround mode (2-channel stereo, Dolby Digital, DTS, etc). Dolby Pro Logic II and 5 channel stereo also excellent with music. No corny DSP modes. The resources used in this unit went to creating excellent sound instead. One of the top picks for a Home Theater/Audio enthusist on a budget. Any one looking for a under $500 AV receiver would be crazy not to check out this receiver. New SR-4300 unit hs 6.1 surround modes

Strength:

Affordable - No, down right cheap now! Musical clarity Easy to setup and install

Weakness:

No auto switching between analogue and digital inputs.

Over the last few years I have started to get more and more into hifi. However having limited funds I guess I try to squeeze every once out of the kit I get. I wanted to upgrade my amp to a surround amp, BUT not losing any musical clarity on stereo cd's. After almost 1 year of looking I have settled on the budget Marantz 4200 at a discounted price (it has recently been superseeded). My set up: Marantz 4200 av amp/reciever Mission 732 front speakers Mission M70 rear speakers Missiom M7c1 centre speaker No sub - I live in a flat!! Quality/ reasonable priced interconnect/ cables. Source units are sturdy/ relaible but basic. (Tosh cd/ Thompson DVD) If you want an affordable, quality sounding system then this is a really good bet. Music is handled with ease by the Marantz and I defy all but the keanest of audiofiles to hear any noticable differences between it and a far more expensive amp. Surround/ movies are detailed and atmospheric. (living it a flat I require quality/ depth of sound, rather than brute force and volume). The matched speakers allround really makes the difference I think. A great buy. I am very happy in the knowledge that when I move this system will be able to handle far greater volumes and a sub with ease, whilst still reatining the clarity I have come to listen out for. (nb. Prices I paid are as follows. Amp - £200 (new) 732's - £150 (4years ago) 70's - £100 (new) M7C1 - £100 (new)

Strength:

The amount of sound modes, its structual integraty, its looks, its versatility.

Weakness:

no input for a turn table, bulky handset.

I am 15 years old and I have recently been given the SR42000 AV amplifier for my birthday. I have been into hi-fi fojust under a year. I started out with a very old Tandburg and an old pair of Kef Caprices and soon upgraded to a pair of B&Ws and the Marantz. I am stunned with the power of it and the quality of the sound it produces. Wow!!!!!

Strength:

Music sound, movie sound, aesthetics, price...

Weakness:

That DTS bug which cause a clicking in the right rear if you pause and re-start a DTS stream. Apparently it's been fixed now.

For anyone getting into Home Cinema for the first time, you won't do much better than the Marantz x200 range. Considering the price, the 4200 really does a fine job with making a big and detailed sound (as long as you're using 8ohm, high sensitivity speakers). The Marantz range is also less opaque with music than most AV amps out there, although the fact that you can send music to all five channels without any apparent loss in detail probably says something. Still, I must go back to that price - many people (including myself, sadly) will happily spend more than £300 for an interconnect, or some speaker cable. This is the value end of the market, and if you're lucky enough to get a product with a decent sound at this level...then you should be happy! The presence of the Marantz SR4200 kind of makes the existance of all other AV amps in the sub £400 range pointless.

Strength:

Dolby Prologic II, decent build, quiet, sufficient power, reasonable remote, decent features, uncomplicated.

Weakness:

None for the value it represents

I recently got the home theater bug and I must tell you that this whole thing is addictive. I have really enjoyed reading all of the reviews on audioweb and find that the reviews range from informative to flat out hillarious. Nonetheless, I have appreciated the insight so much that I felt obligated to jump in with my 2 cents on this receiver. I recently felt that my Sony STRDE845 was too complicated, unprestigous, and hated the hiss from the rear speakers. I started frequenting my local audio specialist store and they pushed Marantz. I fell in lust with the Marantz brochure and the allure of their high end image, styling etc. It also seemed that all of the AV magazines gave their line alot of attention and most reviews across the board where positive. I must say that I am far from an audiophile and can't discern the fine musical differences from one receiver to another. Even if I could, I never could come up with the adjectives to decribe the differences so eloquently like all of the hardcore audiophiles on audioweb. What I can tell you is that it is extremely easy to set up, solidly built, and a good alternative if your prefer to compromise a surplus of features commonly found in mass marketed receivers for a quality piece. As far as power, it goes louder than I need to watch movies in a family environement and there is no hiss, which tells me that it has a decent specification. It was basically a good upgrade from the Sony which drove me nuts with the riddiculously complicated remote and all of the equalizers. In fact, I like my decision so much that I couldn't help but wonder what would happen if I bought the 5200, 6200, 0r 7200? I kept telling myself that this was all I need but I am so compulsive that I went back to Audio Images and the sales person convinced me to trade up to the 7200 because it was the hottest receiver. I bit the bullet and paid the difference and got the 7200. Ultimately I am not sure that it is making a huge improvement in my set up which is all about HT and little about music appreciation. I like that the Marantz receivers are all basically simple with just the essential features, kind of like a Mercedes or BMW. I guess that the 7200 was a good call, I figured that because the SR4200 brought me so much pleasure the 7200 would be that much better. I would say that if money isn't a huge issue between $400-$800 and you

Strength:

Exceeded all performance aspects at its price. To me, it sounds much better than its equivalent Yamaha and Denon models.

Weakness:

Lack of 5.1 or 6.1 inputs for SACD, speaker out terminals accepts only bare wire- would be better with muti-binding post or just female banana plugs. Power may be insufficient for big speakers with low impedence. In any case, these "weaknesses" are acceptable considering its price!

Best value AV receiver at this price range. Good separation of sound and great DD/DTS surround effect. Reproduces an expensive sound on 2 channel stereo, music and vocals are clean warm and involving. Power is sufficient although utilizing the pre-out to connect to other external higher rated power amp usually gives improvement. Same clicking noise on the rear channel during initial use (as feedback by another reviewer here), can be solved by pausing and playing again, anyway unit has become much more stable now. Tuner sound is quite dull and lack of dynamics.
