A great-sounding receiver with all the features ... Marantz didn't skimp at all: S-video switching, Dolby Digital and DTS processing, 3 digital inputs (2 coax/1 toslink), 70 watts RMS on all five channels, heavy build, and outstanding look.

Typical Marantz quality and performance.

I was looking for a receiver in the 800 to 1000 dollar range (that’s Canadian currency) and decided to go a little overboard and buy the HK AVR 65, well needless to say it was returned in 8 days (due to hiss and video interference). Feeling disillusioned I looked for a new receiver and stumbled across the SR-5000, I was so impressed with this unit due to its great sound on movies (DD & DTS just rock) and music. Unlike other receivers I have owned, this one has NO HISS on any channel, and no video interference out of the SVIDEO or RCA jacks. It is a solid built unit with a monstrous power supply, and it never gets too hot. The only complaint that I have is the remote control, it is made out of a cheap plastic and looks like it came out of a toy set for a twelve year old. Fortunately I purchased a Marantz RC-2000 MKII about a year ago and it integrates very nicely with this receiver. There are other receivers out there that are better, but I don’t think you will find one for under 1200-1400 (that’s Canadian currency remember. I have to give it a five on value and a four on overall due to the remote.

This receiver has phenomenal sound on my cheap jbl's; can't wait to get paradigms. While it isn't the best thing I've heard for my budget I am happy with my choice. Remote sucks and is a pain in the but to use especially while watching a movie. Will probably invest in a RC-2000 MKII.
Wish it had a sub pre-out. Other than that I would recommend this receiver to anyone who doesnt have $10000+ to drop on HT.

Great sound

Weakness:

Video switching problems (bad unit?)

Like many Denon products, this is a nice and simple design. The remote doesn't try to remember the codes for thousands of products you don't own. It lets you use the other remotes to put your favorite functions on the buttons you choose. No other receiver remote in this price range was going to support my Legacy Audio preamp.

Wish it had an RF decoder for my LD player. Wish it supported more video sources. But, after dropping a small fortune on a pair of Wilson Audio Cubs, a BAT VK200 amp, and the preamp, the sound quality and the lack of whizzy and often useless DSP features was a relief.

I am going to try to swap this unit out because its S-video switcher is the only blemish I can find on this unit. Colors end up being completely saturated which obliterates picture detail.

Use and love the preamp outputs on this box. Despite the full-featured internal surround decoder, this box still has the ability to listen to an external 6-channel audio decoder.

Needs more than one optical digital audio input.

DTS and Dolby Digital decoders on-board
It's a Marantz (legend) ... for $600!
Cool ergonomics (nice, black, and sleek)
S-video inputs (4)
High-current, low-impedance amplification (RMS)
70W X five (discrete!)

This is a tremendous receiver which doesn't skimp on the features. D/D and DTS decoders are in the machine and the many inputs/switching in the back are delights I once thought only higher-end Marantz receivers ($800+) had.

Typical top-notch Marantz performance and quality make this outstanding receiver probably the best in the highly competitive $500-700 range. If you want a bit more power, features, and/or bang for your buck, there's a Marantz SR-7000 (800) and SR-8000 (1200) and even the new SR-19 THX-Select (1700) available as well. Being a practical man, I found that the SR-5000 was the perfect fit for a budding home theater set-up (running a sony dvp-550 dvd player, panasonic 35sf36 TV, Marantz CC-48 cd changer, and a polk audio mix-and-matched 5.1 speaker set-up).

With the SR-5000, it has been A/V bliss.

New product from Marantz. Looking for other audio enthusiast comments on this product. Sound great at the dealer. Still testing other products. I'm concidering Yamaha RV595a, RV795a, Rotel RSX965 and DENON AVR-2800. All receivers must have Dolb Digital and DTS.

Strength:

Sound in 2 channel stereo

Weakness:

None detected for my purposes

This is also a review of the new SR5200- which puts out 85 watts per channel in a 6 channel format.

A full-time professional musician, I was looking for a unit that would both be an upgrade for movies (having gotten a dvd player a year back), but more importantly for music-listening (primarily classical/jazz) in a basic 2-channel stereo format.

If you are a music-listener/movie-watcher going for the same thing, you won't go wrong here. It actually took me a full week before I even got around to hooking everything up for movie-watching, the 2-channel sound was that good. In some ways this is still an "incomplete" review due to not having a sub-woofer or a 6th ("rear-center surround") speaker.

What it's running:

Marantz 6000-OSE cd player
Thorens TD-180 turntable (matched w/ NAD phono pre-amp)
Pioneer PDR 5500 cd recorder
Sony ES Series tape deck
Panasonic dvd player/ Panasonic VCR
Speakers- DCM Time-Frame 10's (main)
JBL 55's (rear)
(Center is an old-home-built-by-an-audio-store-
owner/friend-in-1969 basic 8-inch full range
speaker for $15 that works very well :-)

Musically speaking in a 2-channel stereo format, it is superb for me. The 85 watts are enough power to drive the DCM's and give full orchestral recordings (Mahler, Stravinsky, etc.) that wide, deep soundstage that makes one hear things you didn't hear before. On jazz recordings (mainly acoustic- Miles Davis, Trane, etc) you really hear what the instruments "sound" like- very warm, very detailed.

I find myself not terribly taken with the Pro-Logic II Music stage. The basic 2-channel has more "oomph" and plenty of range even with older mono recordings.

With movies on dvd that are dts- it works REALLY well. I suspect better than movies with the digital surround, although those sound quite good too. Play with the settings on the remote. I would possibly notice more if I had a sub-woofer- (I gather it requires a powered one) but the DCM's go down to 25Hz, so why??? As stated- music was the priority here...

Overall very pleased. If one needs to "compromise" between music and home theater, this is the unit...

I've given 4 stars for value & 4 overall. I'm only hedging a little simply because it may be that units costing a bit more (if you've got the $$ to burn) may indeed be even better, I wouldn't know. I have a feeling though that differences between a $200-$300 receiver & this one are far greater than differences between this one and something costing $1500-plus. "Great deal" & "Very good product" are certainly high enough recommendations in my opinion...

Final note- The coupling of my old Elite to the DCM's had me suspecting the DCM's a little. Thought of selling them & going for different floor-standers. The SR-5200 changed all that- despite going from 120 watts down to 85 (2-channel). I now won't part with the Time Frames.

SR-5200: DTS/DD 6.1, Pro Logic II, clean sound, high quality built, excellent direct source

Weakness:

None so far...

This review is for SR-5200. I wonder why they don't put the SR 5200 topic, yet? Anyway, I just bought it 2 weeks ago, so I'm still testing it. Here's what I got so far:

Movies:
This reciever rated 85 watts per channel in a 6 channel format. Honestly, I wouldn't know because right now, I'm using 6 external Marantz MA-500 monoamps for running all 6 channels. In DTS-ES mode, the sound is absouletly breathtaking. Especially having the surround center speaker. The 6.1 ch can also be used in Dobly Digital mode. I have lots of old DVD (non DTS) collections. Now, I could enjoy all of them in DD 6.1 ch mode. The only drawback that I could think of, is that the 6.1ch tends to lower the left and right surround channel. Fortunetly, most of the surround signals have been moved to the surround center.
I've played Gladiator, The Haunting, and Rush Hour 2. These are DTS-ES 6.1 ch encoded DVD discs. They all sounded very good. I give 5 star for movies

Musical:
Very nice indeed! Also 5 star! I tried all high quality recording CD's like DMP, Shefield Labs Recordings, GRP, JVC 20bit conversion to low quality mp3's. What amazed me most was that the poor quality mp3 still sound as good as a regular cd. As for the high quality cd's: WOW!! Clean and clean sounds. Excellent 2 channel mode, not to mentioned the direct source mode which will bypass all the filters.

All in all, great system!! In the old days, you could only choose between movies or musical setup. Now, you can get a Reciever that will do both. Pretty cool, huh!

Here's my setup:

B&W THX FCM front speakers (Front, Left, Center)
B&W THX SCM Surround speakers
B&W ASW 1000 Powered Sub
B&W CC6-S2 center channel for surround center

Marantz SR-5200
Marantz MA-500 (6 pieces)

Pioneer DVD DV-533K
Sony Hifi VHS

Audioquest Ruby RCA's
Tara Labs speaker cables
